In total 7,377 Lancasters rolled off the production lines in Britain and Canada, during WW II. Today, 17 Lancasters survive around the world, but only two are in flying condition. This is their story.

Wednesday, 13 August 2014 saw the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Avro Lancaster PA474 'Thumper Mk.III' and the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Avro Lancaster Mk.X KB726 (C-GVRA) obtain their Public Display Authorisation at RAF Coningsby, marking the commencement of the Thwaites Lancaster Bomber Tour 2014. The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum Lancaster will be in the UK during the month of August, making appearances along with the RAF's BBMF Lanc, at 20 Airshows.

Lancaster 2014 UK Tour



The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will be flying their prized Avro Lancaster to England this August for a month long visit. The Lancaster will join the only other airworthy Lancaster in the world, owned and operated by the Royal Air Force's renowned Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), and participate in several events and activities.
The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's Lancaster will depart from Hamilton, Ontario on August 4th and plan to arrive in England on August 8th. The North Atlantic crossing will include en-route stops

J' ai le plaisir de vous présenter, ce magnifique reportage, dédié à cet avion le "LANCASTER" 
Pour les férus ou les nostalgiques de cette ancienne génération d' avion,
 je vous souhaite un bon vol, comme si vous y étiez.
Tout y est : (Les 7 hommes d'équipage à leur poste)
- Le bruit des moteurs ( 4 x Rolls-Royce Merlin V12 de 1280 CV chacun, voire de 1460 CV chacun en version Mk 1)
- Les vibrations (Si,Si... avec la caméra)
- 1500 pieds en palier (450 m)
- Vario 0
- 2100 trs sur les 4 moulins
- Mitrailleurs à leur poste, mitrailleuses engagées (8 à 10 mitrailleuses de 7,70 mm suivant la version - Cal 303)
- "Paré à larguer" (de 6500 à 8000 kgs de bombes)
Manque plus que les odeurs d'huile et d' essence...

Wings of Memory : Berging van de lancaster DX-P in Lierde



Tijdens de eerste winternacht (21 december) van 1942 vlogen de bommenwerpers van Bomber Command richting Munchen. Omstreeks 23u30 ving de Freya-radar langs de kust de eerste berichten op van de aankomende formatie. Vanop St.-Truiden werden 5 toestellen op goed geluk ingezet. Ook vanop Laon-Athies startten de Messerschmitts van de 1.NJG 4 de motoren en verspreidden zich doorheen het Vlaamse luchtruim. Eén van de indringers was de Lancaster met rompcode DX-P,een toestel van het 57 Squadron, die nacht opgestegen in Scampton (Engeland). Iets na 23u30 werd de Avro lancaster MK l DX-P for peter, met serienummer W4234 neergeschoten boven Steenhuize (Belgie-Oost-Vlaanderen) door Hauptmann Wilhelm Herget in een Messersschmitt 110 van het 1.NJG 4.Het toestel stortte wat verder neer op de Lierdese wijk Kakebeke.Met uitzondering vande Nieuw-Zeelandse staartschutter Sgt P.B.Pickford, die gewond gevangen werd genomen en de rest van de oorlog zou doorbrengen in Stalag 344 te Lamsdorf, kwam de ganse bemanning om het leven. Posing tentatively in their uniforms, at first glance they could be a Lancaster Bomber crew preparing for a daring war-time mission.
But these photos were not taken 70 years ago, but this week at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre - the former Lancaster bomber base at RAF East Kirkby.
Admirers of the war-time planes stepped back in time to relive the sights, sounds and smells of the famous bomber which helped destroy the Nazi war machine.
They dressed up in original uniforms and sat in the cockpit of 'Just Jane', one of only three Lancasters left in the world capable of flying....
