Video: "Defense Of Antwerp Against The V-1 - World War Two Educational Documentary - WDTVLIVE42"

During World War II the city of Antwerp, Belgium, was an important strategic target because of its port. It was occupied by Germany in May 1940 and liberated by the British 11th Armoured Division on 4 September 1944. After this, the Germans attempted to destroy the Port of Antwerp using thousands of V-1 and V-2 missiles.

This film uses historic footage to show how, for 160 days & nights, allied forces defended the city against the relentless onslaught of flying bombs. .

ASA : Deurne : 14/09/14 : An historical moment

14/09/14 : An historical moment

We are happy !
It took over 15 years and 3 airport commanders (Paul Paridaens, Eddy Cleirbaut and Wim Verbist) were involved but at last we got it…
During the weekend of September 14th, the runway at Antwerp airport was reopened to its full length. During the previous months, the it had been shortened due to works on the "Militaire baan", the road at the south side of the airport. These works involved the CONSTRUCTION of the
420 m long tunnel, which was at last implemented in order to create a RESA area (Runway End Safety Area) at the end of runway 11. This RESA was needed in order to FULFILL the ICAO airport operation conditions.

21st TSC spearheads helicopter offload at Antwerp

21st TSC spearheads helicopter offload at Belgian portElements of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command assisted the 838th Transportation Battalion, Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern, Germany, with the offload of nearly 50 Army helicopters and associated components from a cargo ship at the port here, Jan. 17.

The AH-64 Apache helicopters and CH-47 Chinook helicopters began their journey in Beaumont, Texas, where they spent 12 days traveling across the Atlantic Ocean before being offloaded and stored at the port of Antwerp.

Various United States and partner nation agencies are involved in the movement with the final destination set for Coleman Barracks, Germany, where the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade will assemble and distribute the helicopters to its subordinate units.

According to Hans Roggeveen, a senior cargo specialist with the Benelux Detachment of 838th Trans., the cargo will be stored in Antwerp for up to three weeks before being loaded onto barges and transported down the Rhine River into Germany.

Best regards,

Daniel Brackx

Antwerp under V1 and V2 attacks

Antwerp and her citizens were the victims of the massive attack by V2 rockets at the end of the war. Except at the Stampe Museum in Antwerp there is no place where the courage of the city and her inhabitants is remembered. Thanks to the net, the story can be told.

vidéo : "Clark Gable 8th USAAF 1943"

Thank Philippe for the information

Clark Gable was a superstar in Hollywood. In 1942, following the death of his wife Carole Lombard in an air crash, he became afraid of flying. However, Gable joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and followed successfully officer and air gunner training. He was posted in the UK where he flow combat missions on B-17. One of these mission was over Antwerp.

During much of 1943, Major Clark Gable was stationed at Polebrook to
produce a recruiting film for aircraft gunners. While there, he flew five
combat missions as an observer. Much of the film was shot by MGM
cinematographer Andrew McIntyre, who not only accompanied Gable,
but who also enlisted with him in the USAAF.

Gable's first combat mission occurred on 4 May 43 flying with Capt W.R. Calhoun from the
303rd Bomb Group at Molesworth in the lead aircraft nicknamed 'Eight Ball II' #41-24635
and targeting Antwerp, Belgium. His second mission was on 15 Jun 43 flying with
Lt. Theodore. Argiropulos from the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook in the
aircraft 'Argonaut III' #42-29851 and targeting Villacoublay, France.
His third combat mission occurred on July 24, 1943 flying with
Lt.Col . Robert W. Burns from the 351st Bomb Group at Polebrook
in 'Argonaut III' #2-29851 and bombing Heroya, Norway.
His fourth combat mission occurred 12 Aug 43 flying with Capt... plus
