New Age of Military Airlift Brings Friendly Forces to Brussels Forum

With the first delivery of the Boeing C-17 to India and the first delivery of the Lockheed Martin C-130J to Israel both occurring in recent weeks, ahead of the first delivery of Europe's new Airbus A400M military airlifter taking place this summer, the global community remains abuzz with anticipation of a bright future for the military airlift market.
Defence IQ's annual Military Airlift 2013 event coincides with these emerging market opportunities, allowing those in the Aerospace industry to meet with regional airlift end-users and assess both current requirements and feedback from recent airlifter operations. The conference will be held on the 19th & 20th September at the Melsbroek Air Base, Brussels, Belgium, hosted with the official backing of 15(th) Wing Air Transport, Belgium Component.
Speakers will highlight a range of platform developments from across Europe, as well as focus on methods for improving the pooling and sharing of airlift assets for a more efficient utilisation of allied platforms.
In addition, a pre-conference workshop day entitled 'A Systems Approach to Military Airlift' is set to be hosted by Carlee A Bishop, Executive Director, PMASE, Georgia Institute of Technology, and is scheduled for 18th September.

Forty Belgian troops and two Agusta Medevac helicopters leave for Mali

Forty Belgian troops left Melsbroek Military Airport bound for Mali on Sunday morning 27 January 2013. After a stopover in an unspecified country they will be deployed operating two Belgian Army Medical Corp Augusta A109BA helicopters that are being sent to Mali as part of Operation Serval.
They will join the three Belgian soldiers already in Mali. The Belgians will be based in the Malian capital Bamako.
The two helicopters (registrations H-30 and H-39) left Melsbroek for Mali aboard a Russian Ilyushin 76 transport plane today (29/01). The exact location of where the helicopters will be based has yet to be confirmed.
The helicopters will be used to fly the wounded to hospitals and medical posts and consequently will be deployed as close to the front as is practically possible.

France and Belgium Discuss A400M Multinational Unit

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian met his Belgian counterpart, Pieter De Crem, in Brusselson September 3 to discuss greater cooperation between their two countries, including the creation of a multinational A400M unit. Based at Brussels military airport, Melsbroek, the unit would be composed of the seven Belgian and one Luxembourg A400Ms, plus two each from France and Germany.
The two ministers also discussed the possibility of joint training of pilots of the NH90 helicopter being acquired by both countries. France and Belgium intend to extend their already-existing cooperation on pilot training to other armed services.
Another area of cooperation discussed by the two ministers was non-combatant evacuation operations requiring the deployment of special forces.
