A Long Way to the War

Ladies and Gentlemen Aviators

In December of 1941, Hugh Bone was finally of age to join the RAF. Like many young men in England, he was anxious to join the fight and protect his homeland. After joining however, it would be two full years before he flew his Mosquito fighter-bomber into combat—but what a remarkable two years they were! Follow this link to learn more.

Personal Effects

These days, we call it closure, but in 1942, Gertrude Rouleau simply wanted her lost son's personal effects and the memories they contained. Though it took more than three years to hunt them down, the RCAF was finally able to bring them to her door. Follow this link to learn more: Click Here

Vintage News by Vintage Wings of Canada

Ghost in the House

With another Remembrance Day upon us, it is not only our moral duty to remember the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform, but also to rediscover those who are long forgotten. To bring them to life again. To share their stories with younger generations. To make good on our promises. Here is the story of one young father in Ottawa who imbued in his children a sense of duty and history by connecting them with A Ghost in the House. Follow this link to learn more:

75 Years ago this summer, fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force changed the course of history for Great Britain. Amongst the legendary "Few", were more than a hundred Canadians. Vintage Wings of Canada : Lunch at The Eagle

Forwarded message - From: Vintage Wings

Ladies and Gentlemen Aviators

It's summer and time to rerun a few of our favourite stories from years past. The Eagle Pub in Cambridge, England holds a special place in the history of the Royal Air Force and the Mighty Eighth Air Force. As one nurses a beer at a table in The Eagle, one begins to hear voices - the voices of young men who never came home. Vintage Wings of Canada : All the Things Never Done

Forwarded message -  From: Vintage Wings

Ladies and Gentlemen Aviators

It's been a busy month here at Vintage Wings of Canada. With our signature event, the Hadfield Youth Summit, close at hand, we'll take a writing break and reprise one of our favourite stories from many years ago. 73 years ago this month, a young boy from Ottawa who grew up just a few blocks from where I write this, was swallowed up in the desperate aerial battle that was Malta.  After months of research, his story was pieced together from numerous sources and told for the very first time in Vintage News in 2008.

Ray Beaune survived many combat missions with Bomber Command and the deprivation of a POW camp, but it was only towards the end of his life that he shared his memories with his family. In 1983, nearly ten years after the last one flew with Air Canada, the phone rang and he got another chance to take the grand old lady to the dance. Vintage Wings of Canada : 633 Squadron

In the summer of 1964, as a young fellow of 16, it was commonplace to come in contact with one of nature's more disagreeable manifestations, especially when fishing with my grandfather. But, on one hot summer day, I encountered a never-before-seen species. It was huge! Its body was 44 feet long and its wings, 54 feet. It even sported two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, making it one of the fastest creatures in existence. Yet where did it come from? As an aviation devotee, until now, I had never seen such a winged predator. Obviously, something had been missing in my all aviation "upbringing", and it took a trip to a local movie theatre to observe what I had been missing. Now, in a darkened theatre, I had been bitten… by winged actors in a new movie entitled 633 Squadron.
They were de Havilland MOSQUITOS!

Vintage Wings of Canada : Lifting the Dead

Forwarded message - From: Vintage Wings <

Though sangfroid is the stuff of Hollywood movies, it was training and professionalism that won the Second World War. There is no better example of this than Bomber Command Lancaster pilot Bud Larson – Distinguished Flying Cross, Two Operational Tours, Pathfinder Force, quiet Canadian.
