Vrienden van de luchtvaart, van 13 tot 16 april gaan enkele collega’s naar AERO Freidrichshafen (www.aero-expo.com), een luchtvaartbeurs die omschreven wordt als ‘The Global Show for General Aviation’. Maar liefst 590 exposanten worden verwacht uit 29 landen. Ook de AviationExpo Europe (www.expo.aero) zal vast en zeker bezocht worden door veel Belgische piloten. Tussen 27 en 29 mei worden er zowat alle nieuwigheden uit de sector van de general aviation getoond of gedemonstreerd, van DPM tot zakenjet. Dit jaar wordt de beurs op Bitburg Airport gehouden, vanuit België zeer gemakkelijk en snel bereikbaar. In de volgende updates hopen we wat meer informatie te kunnen brengen over deze events. Wie rustig in België wil blijven kan op 15 mei even langsgaan op Kortrijk-Wevelgem International Airport. Nabij loods 69 wordt een ‘open vliegdag’ georganiseerd waar vooral kandidaat-piloten zich kunnen informeren of een kennismakingsvlucht kunnen volgen (www.leren-vliegen.be). Op 14 en 15 mei willen we onze lezers welkom heten op het Grimbergse vliegveld. Dat weekend brengt de Club Fournier International (CFI, www.club-fournier.org) een bezoek aan Grimbergen. Verwacht geen grootse luchtvaartshow, wel een aangenaam treffen van de toch merkwaardige Fournier-vliegtuigen en hun piloten. Wie vanuit zijn zetel van de luchtvaart wil genieten kan dat ook natuurlijk. Lees bijvoorbeeld ‘Sabena, De Pioniersjaren’ van Annelies Verbeke (uitgeverij Lido, ISBN 9789055448692, www.lidobooks.com). Het werd een boek dat voornamelijk gevuld is met nostalgische foto’s uit privécollecties van Sabena-bemanningsleden. Van Piet Dhanens en Frederik Vanderstraeten verschijnt op Open Monumentendag (11 september 2011) een publicatie over het neerstorten, in de nacht van 6 op 7 juni 1915, van de Zeppelin LZ37. De voorintekening voor ‘Luchtschip ontploft boven Gent (Sint-Amandsberg)’ loopt tot 31 juli, voor info mail naar vanderstraeten.fr@telenet.be. Over beide boeken brengen we u in latere updates van Hangar Flying meer informatie. In augustus 2009 werd in Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Olen een monument opgericht voor de bemanning van de Halifax HR839 (http://webh01.ua.ac.be/blp/content/monument-bemanning-halifax-mkii-hr839-lk-l) Het onderzoek werd verricht door de Planehunters. Stoffelijke resten van de bemanningsleden werden op 7 april 2011 tijdens een korte maar emotionele plechtigheid op het Schoonselhof begraven. Er waren vertegenwoordigers aanwezig van de CWGC, RAF, RCAF, de Planehunters, … Twee familieleden van een gesneuvelde waren overgekomen vanuit Canada om de dienst bij te wonen. Er werden kransen neergelegd en de familie van een van de slachtoffers stak een omslag met familiefoto’s in het kistje. Hangar Flying wordt nu ook gesteund door de The Pilot Shop (www.pilotshop.nl/index.html), gevestigd op Lelystad Airport. The Pilot Shop (‘run by pilots for pilots’) organiseert op zaterdag 7 mei een open house, bijzonder interessant –en voordelig– voor wat aviation shopping. Paul en Frans gingen een kijkje nemen op het ULM-vliegveld van Avernas. Guy werd ontvangen bij Bussé helikopters. Guido vloog samen met Robert Rombouts met de magnifieke Ercoupe OO-PUS. Jean-Pierre volgde een samenkomst en formatievlucht van de 369 Sqn Vintage Aircraft Association. . Tom onderzocht of de expressweg in het West-Vlaamse Stalhille moest dienst doen als noodlandingsbaan. Jan Van der Cruysse werd bekroond met de PROTY-award, Guy en Frans maakten daarover een kort verslag. Guido en fotograaf Jan trokken naar Oostende voor foto’s van de Diamond DA40 NG. Kevin stuurde Hangar Flying een impressie van Brussels Airport, het zijn vliegtuigfoto’s die genomen werden tijdens het winterseizoen Hangar Flying.

369 Squadron (Belgian Vintage Aviation Association)

369 Squadron was originally created at Brasschaat on July 1st 1947 as an AOP squadron and it became operational on July 31, 1947. It was redesignated No 15 Squadron AOP in February 1948 and so the designation "369" disappeared in time.

In 2010 it was brought back to life by five aviation enthusiasts by incorporating it in "369 Squadron - Belgian Vintage Aircraft Association". It' s goal is to restore and preserve Belgium's unique aeronautical heritage in flying condition and to unite owners, operatorsand aviation enthusiasts.

Operating from Brasschaat Airfield, the cradle of Belgian Aviation and one of Europe's oldest military airfields, the museum strives to preserve Belgian Aviation History for future generations and to promote aviation as a whole.

369 Squadron - Belgian Vintage Aircraft Association not only intends to unite owners of vintage aircraft to display their collection on the ground as well as in the air at venues at home and abroad. It aims to inspire young and old and wants to enable them to discover the developments in Belgian Aviation History within a technical, social, cultural and historic context. Consequently, our motto is "You don't have to own one, you don't have to be able to fly one, you just have to love them ! " Of course, preserving the aircraft in flying condition is paramount in the activities of the organisation, but an active social life is as well. Therefore, during the year, the associationwill organise several events so as to cater to every members' needs.

Belgian WIngs: NASA retiring its shuttles to Smithsonian, museums in California, Florida, New York

NASA revealed Tuesday where its retired space shuttles will be given for public display. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum will exhibit OV-103, better known as Discovery. Orbiter Atlantis, OV-104, will remain in Florida, where it will be exhibited by the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. NASA's fifth and youngest shuttle, Endeavour, OV-105, will be flown to Los Angeles and the California Science Center. Enterprise (OV-101), which never flew in space but was used for test landings, will also be given a new home, moving from the Smithsonian's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center (which will be where Discovery is displayed) to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a converted aircraft carrier, in New York.

The decision to retire the space shuttles came in the wake of the 2003 loss of orbiter Columbia, NASA's first shuttle to fly in space, as it returned to Earth on its 28th mission. NASA lost the space shuttle Challenger, its second orbiter to fly, on an earlier flight in 1986 when that orbiter broke apart 73 seconds into its 10th launch.

NASA will rely on Russia's Soyuz spacecraft to bring its astronauts to and from the ISS until new vehicles are ready, targeted for 2016 or earlier.

Nikolaus, le pilote de Me262 de la Luftwaffe, se retrouve à fuir devant le rouleau compresseur soviétique, à pied, à travers la Poméranie.

Sur le front de l'Est, plus rien ne semble pouvoir ralentir l'avancée de l'Armée Rouge. Pour l'Allemagne Nazie, c'est l'hallali. Pour le jeune pilote Nikolaus qui, dans l'épisode précédent (T3 « Horrido »), a été contraint de poser en catastrophe son biréacteur Messerschmitt 262 dans un champ de neige, l'objectif est de regagner son escadrille pour reprendre le combat. Il va s'en suivre une longue et dangereuse course à travers la campagne.
