Dominie – Now on Display
The RAF Dominie T.MK.1 which arrived at the Museum in February has now been moved into position and is on permanent display to visitors.  The aircraft made its final flight into RAF Cosford earlier this year and is of particular significance because it was the first Dominie to enter RAF Service.  The Dominie is now on display outside, near the Museum's Visitor Centre.
The Dominie T.MK.1 was built as a navigation training aircraft and has been in RAF service since 1965.  A total of twenty Dominies were built in the 1960's to replace the Meteor NF (T) 14 and initially flew in a silver/day-glow colour scheme which later changed to the red, white and grey scheme and finally to today's black, grey and white.
They were used to train Navigators, Air Engineers and Air Loadmasters in systems management, air leadership, decision making and teamwork and could reach speeds over 320MPH.  The retirement date for the Dominie was brought forward by two years due to cancellation of the Nimrod and the planned reduction of the Tornado fleet.

  August Activities
Throughout August we will be offering families the chance to get creative.  From the 1st to the 5th take part in the Cold War Investigation trail.  Participants will receive a small prize, when successfully completed trails are handed in at the Visitor Centre.

The 8th-12th August sees the return of the popular parachutes and gliders.  Try one of our designs or create your own and watch those gliders soar.  The 15th-19th August is moon machines week where families can create their own space craft using our recycled materials. The final August activity is windmills and kites from 22nd – 26th.  Families can make a mini kite and a windmill to take home as a souvenir of their visit.
A small charge applies to take part and activities are available from 11.00am – 12.30pm and 2.00pm – 3.30pm.

Squadron Prints Re-visited – New Exhibition
In 2000, the RAF Museum Cosford displayed the "Millennium Squadron Print" exhibition, a collection of aviation prints from the flying units of the UK armed forces as at 12.01am 1st January 2000.  The collection was compiled by Group Captain W.A.W. James MBE, now Station Commander of RAF Shawbury, but in 1999 the commanding officer of the RAF Central Flying School (Helicopter) at Shawbury.  As an added feature, he asked the aircrew on each unit to sign each print.

Exhibit of the Month - Fairey Delta 2
Each month our Curators will highlight a particular exhibit from the collection and let you know more on its background and history.  This first choice is from our Alex Henshaw Curator Nick Sturgess.
Highlighting just one particular artefact is never easy.  Each one has its own history and each is interesting whether it be a uniform badge or a transport aircraft.  But after some deliberation I've decided that the one for the August newsletter is the Fairey Delta 2.
Not only is this little aircraft incredibly small, sleek and streamlined but it also has an air about it that makes it still look futuristic today. When the type was rolled out for the first time in 1954 it must have looked to most like it had been taken directly from a science fiction comic.
What this little aircraft type achieved though is remarkable. At a time when Britain lagged behind in supersonic flight it was this design that smashed the American held air speed record with a new record of 1,132mph.
As Britain's final record holder it warrants a special place in history.
