Ladies and Gentlemen Aviators During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe created decoy airfields and populated them with dummy wooden aircraft in the hopes that the enemy would attack these counterfeit fighters and bombers and leave the real ones unmolested. Allied intruder crews did indeed spot these airfields, but in the case of some, attacked them with dummy wooden bombs - perhaps the greatest example of nose-thumbing of the war.
