Nearly 2.3 million passengers (+3.2%) at Brussels Airport in May Strong growth in cargo volumes reaching nearly 76,000 tonnes (+12%) This continued growth since the start of the year was achieved despite the ongoing war in the Middle East and the national day of industrial action on 12 May. Nearly 2.3 million passengers travelled via Brussels Airport in May, representing an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period last year. This growth was supported by several long weekends as well as the end of the school holidays in French-speaking education. This continued growth since the start of the year was achieved despite the ongoing war in the Middle East and the national day of industrial action on 12 May. Nearly 2.3 million passengers travelled via Brussels Airport in May, representing an increase of 3.2% compared to the same period last year. This growth was supported by several long weekends as well as the end of the school holidays in French-speaking education. Strong growth was again recorded in the cargo segment, which saw volumes rise by 12% to nearly 76,000 tonnes.

Passenger traffic continues to grow, up 3.2% from May 2025

Despite two events that had an impact on operations, passenger numbers at Brussels Airport continue to grow. The airport welcomed 2,271,847 passengers last month, up 3.2% compared to May 2025. Passenger growth was driven in particular by several long weekends, including the 1 May weekend, as well as by the end of the school holidays of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.

The ten most popular destinations last month were the same as in April: Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, Germany, Portugal, France, the United States and Switzerland.

Outbound transfer passengers accounted for 13% of total traffic and once again recorded growth, mainly towards Europe, Africa and North America, confirming Brussels Airport’s role as a strategic European hub connecting these regions.

As in the two previous months, the situation in the Middle East continues to affect activities at Brussels Airport. There are currently no flights to Tel Aviv or Doha, and flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi are operating at reduced frequency.

In parallel, a national day of industrial action on Tuesday 12 May also impacted airport activities, with 25,000 passengers unable to take their scheduled flight. However, unlike the eight previous days of industrial action since 1 January 2025, nearly half of all passenger flights were able to operate this time.

Cargo volumes rise strongly by 12%

In May, total cargo volumes through Brussels Airport reached 75,847 tonnes, representing an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2025. This double-digit growth is mainly driven by the increase in flown cargo (+12.3%), particularly due to the boom in the full freighter segment (+53.3%), linked to higher volumes with Asia and South America. Trucked volumes also recorded double-digit growth (+10.1%).

In contrast, integrator services declined for the first time this year (-5.4%). Cargo carried on passenger flights (“belly cargo”) continues to be affected by the situation in the Middle East, decreasing by 5.3%.

The main import regions are Asia and North America, both showing strong growth, while Africa recorded a slight decline in imports. The same three regions also represent the main export markets, with slight growth in North America and Africa.

Slight increase in commercial flight movements (+0.6%)

Brussels Airport recorded a 0.6% increase in the number of commercial flight movements in May compared to May 2025. This growth was visible in both passenger flights (+0.8%) and cargo flights (+0.4%). Passenger load factors have continued to rise since the start of the year. On average, there were 147 passengers per flight in May, four more than in the same period last year, reflecting sustained demand and more efficient use of capacity.

Brussels Airport welcomed more than 1.6 million passengers in January 2026, an increase of 5.5% compared to the same month last year. Cargo volumes reached nearly 61,500 tonnes, up by 3.5% compared to January 2025, confirming a continued positive trend in this essential segment of the Belgian economy.

Passenger figures: +5.5% compared to January 2025

The winter weather conditions at the start of the year did little to slow down the steady growth in passenger numbers. Brussels Airport welcomed 1,601,051 passengers in January, up 5.5% compared to January 2025. The month saw a higher number of arriving passengers due to the end of the Christmas holidays. Several additional flights were also recorded as a result of diversions from Dutch airports affected by severe winter weather.

The ten most popular destinations were Spain, Italy, Morocco, Germany, Turkey, Switzerland, France, the United States, the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates.

The average number of passengers per flight increased to 135, compared to 131 in January 2025. In addition, 18% of passengers were transfer passengers, confirming Brussels Airport's growing role as a hub connecting Europe with Africa and North America.

Cargo volumes continue to grow: +3.5%

In January, total cargo volumes at Brussels Airport reached 61,485 tonnes, up 3.5% compared to January 2025. Flown cargo also increased by 2.4%. This growth is primarily driven by an increase in cargo transported on passenger flights (+5.1%) and strong performance in the express services segment (+10%). The full‑freighter segment, however, recorded a decrease of 8.2%.

Trucked volumes also recorded solid growth, rising by 11.2%.

The main import regions remained Asia, North America and Africa, just like last year. Exports to Asia and Africa recorded significant growth.

Flight movements: very slight decrease of 0.1%

In January, Brussels Airport recorded 14,007 commercial flight movements, a slight decrease of 0.1% compared to January 2025. The number of passenger flights increased by 1.7%, while cargo flight movements decreased by 9.4%.

This evolution reflects the more efficient use of available capacity, with improved load factors and increased use of belly cargo on passenger flights for freight transport.

24.4 million passengers at Brussels Airport in 2025, 3.3% more than in 2024

Cargo grows by 8.5% with 795,000 tonnes of freight last year

24.4 million passengers travelled through Brussels Airport last year, an increase of 3.3% compared to 2024. Due to the seven national union actions, this growth was lower than expected, with a negative impact of 275,000 fewer travellers. On the upside, in 2025, Brussels Airport's network was further strengthened with six new passenger destinations and three new passenger airlines. In terms of cargo, 2025 was a strong year with an 8.5% increase in total volumes to 795,000 tonnes.

"2025 was a year of further growth, a stronger network and the launch of the first phase of Hub 3.0, our large-scale investment project to improve the airport experience for our passengers. Despite the challenges we faced, such as national strikes and a cyber incident at one of our suppliers, we remained focused on our core task: connecting people, businesses and communities, both for passenger traffic and cargo. This is also reflected in the figures, with growth in both passenger and cargo traffic. Together with all our airport partners, we have demonstrated our resilience and commitment to further strengthen our role as our country's international gateway," says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport

Passengers: an increase of 3.3% compared to 2024

In 2025, 24,4 million passengers travelled through Brussels Airport. This represents an increase of 3.3% compared to 2024 (23.6 million passengers). Leisure travel and travel to visit family and friends saw the strongest growth. However, the seven national trade union actions led to a total of 2,400 cancelled flights. This resulted in 275,000 fewer travellers last year, tempering overall growth.

The passenger network expanded further with three new airlines Cathay Pacific, Air Senegal and Smartwings, and six new destinations. Three important intercontinental destinations were added, expanding the range of options for passengers, both for direct destinations and for onward travel:  Atlanta (Delta Air Lines), Chongqing (Hainan Airlines) and Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific. The new short- and medium-haul routes are Bordeaux (easyJet), Larnaca (Aegean) and Scandinavian Mountains Airport (TUI fly).

The share of departing transfer passengers was 14%, particularly on routes between Europe, Africa and North America. Brussels Airport continues to play a key role as a hub for Star Alliance, the largest passenger airline alliance in the world.

The ten countries with the most passengers in 2025 were Spain, Italy, Germany, Türkiye, Morocco, Greece, Portugal, France, the United States and Switzerland.

Cargo: an increase of 8.5% in total volumes compared to 2024

Last year, 795,000 tonnes of cargo were transported via Brussels Airport, an increase of 8.5% compared to 2024. Air cargo transport rose even more sharply, by 11.5% compared to 2024.

Belly cargo rose by 9.2% due to the continued growth in passenger flights and new long haul intercontinental destinations. Express services also saw a sharp increase (+22.3%) compared to 2024. In the full freighter segment, there was a slight increase in volumes compared to 2024 (+0.8%). Trucked cargo volumes fell by 6.7%.

Asia, Africa and North America were the main import regions in 2025. For exports, Asia remained the leading destination, followed by North America and Africa.

Air traffic movements in 2025

The number of flights grew by 2.8% last year compared to 2024, to 198,000 flight movements. The number of passenger flights increased by 2.4%, while the number of passengers per flight rose from 144 in 2024 to a new record of 145 in 2025. The number of cargo flights grew by 2.2% compared to 2024. In addition to commercial flight movements, there were also 5,777 exempt flights (including state flights and military flights).

In 2025, the independent slot coordinator (BSC) allocated 15,771 night slots, in compliance with the legal limit of a maximum of 16,000 night slots.

In 2025, there were a total of 15,938 commercial flight movements during the night (between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.), which is fewer than in 2024 (16,284 commercial night-time flight movements). In addition, there were 299 exempt flights (state flights, military flights and helicopter flights).

There are often operational reasons for night flights without a night slot, such as delays or operational problems. Whether these flights were carried out with a valid reason is always checked by the DGLV, which is responsible for overseeing this.

The number of night flights without a night slot has fallen significantly over the past three years, by 29%, from 1,458 in 2022 to 1,032 in 2025, thanks to the proposals made by Brussels Airport and the proactive approach taken by the DGLV, BSC and the airlines.
