Belgian Wings Update: 29 July 2013

Best regards,

Daniel

Stockel field in 1953 and now (not in Sterrebeek)

Last week, I discovered the place where the Stockel meetings were organized before WW1 was moved by miracle from Woluwé Saint Pierre to Sterrebeek.

Fortunately, 2 websites contain the correct location of these events.

http://gis.irisnet.be/bruciel/# permit to compare aerial pictures of Brussels from 1953 and 2012.

The former race field of Stockel is clearly visible on the picture of 1953

Today, most of the place is part of the Centre Sportif of Woluwé St Pierre or converted to housing (I am living close to the former racing field).

The excellent Online Database van het Belgisch Luchtvaarterfgoed   maintained by the team of Hangar flying also contain information on the monument erected in remembrance of the stockel meeting inside the Centre Sportif.  (http://www.aviationheritage.eu/nl/content/monument-koninklijke-aero-club-eerste-pioniers )

So the crew of the USS Entreprise never teleported Stockel to
Sterrebeek and we hope another low flying legend is dead.

Video: "Sikorsky S-55.mov"

A few days ago I was given the privilege of flying this big, barking "old school" piece of American aviation technology after not having flown one in 36 years, not since my Bristow Helicopter days in the Persian Gulf in 1974. Even then, the aircraft we were flying were more than 20 years old. This is the first run-up and trip around the patch after the current owner, Hale Gurland, completed the big Sikorsky's 2010 annual inspection.
