[European Space Agency] : Spin Your Thesis! 2018 open for proposals

Sometimes it's good to get into a spin. Particularly if you are a student wanting to run a hyper-gravity experiment. For the ninth year, ESA's Education Office is open to submissions for its Spin Your Thesis! programme.
Spin Your Thesis! allows students to carry out experiments in hypergravity conditions at ESA's Large Diameter Centrifuge (LDC). Very different from the desktop centrifuges found in ordinary laboratories, the LDC is a world-class instrument. It is eight metres in diameter, and so large that it is housed in its own hall at ESA's technical heart (ESTEC), The Netherlands.  It can hold an experiment of up to 80kg in mass and spin so fast that it simulates a pull of gravity up to 20 times larger than that experienced at Earth's surface.

DIXIE RETURNS TO FLIGHT
On Monday 13 March 2017 The Shuttleworth Collection's Sopwith Triplane underwent both engine run and successful test flights after almost three years under restoration. A problem on landing at the 2014 Military Pageant airshow caused some significant damage to the upper wings, engine and wheels, resulting in the work being carried out to restore it to airworthiness.

The aircraft has had a complete recovering of the airframe, and repaint to the same scheme for N6920 'Dixie'. Both upper wings and port lower wing have been repaired and a strut has been replaced, new undercarriage and wheels fitted, along with a new propeller, and a full engine rebuild carried out.

Chief pilot Dodge Bailey engine ran the Triplane, then took the aircraft up for test flights. Further flight tests will be carried out, successful completion of which should lead to the aircraft re-joining the flying programme for the 2017 season.

NEW COLOURS FOR NOORDUYN HARVARD
After an 18-month restoration, Noorduyn Harvard MkIIB – FE511 – returned to The Shuttleworth Collection on 14 March 2017.

Delivered new to the Royal Canadian Air Force on 13th October 1942, FE511 served at No.6 Service Flying Training School at Dunnville, Ontario, for the duration of the war. In 1947, she was sold to the Swedish air force and she remained in that country until 2015, when she was acquired by Hurricane Heritage. The aircraft previously wore fictitious USAF markings, but has now been restored in the colours of a Harvard provided to the RAF under the wartime lend-lease agreement with the United States.
