VintageAirRally Beach STOL Competition - Press Release

World's first aircraft Short Take Off & Landing competition on sand announced

Open to everyone, not just STOL or Vintage - Everyone!

Precision, if some times hair-raising, aviation action and visually stunning planes expected!

The World's first aircraft Short Take Off & Landing (STOL) competition on sand is set to take place in Belgium in the Summer. Organised by one of the world's top aviation adventure companies it is expected to attract pilots from all over the globe and establish some new world records. This first event, the VintageAirRally International STOL Competition,  will be attended by thousands of spectators who will witness some hair-raising if not gut-wrenching flying on this unusual day out on the beach!

In addition, the beach will become a temporary international airport.  Thus you can arrive directly from the UK (for example), and your normal insurance should cover!  To meet health and safety requirements temporary air traffic control and flight management equipment will be set up on the beach in our very funky control tower.  Our ATC will work in conjunction with our marshalling and aviation event groundcrew.

The 'VintageAirRally International STOL Competition' will take place on the beach of the fashionable town of Knokke-Heist, Belgium. Pilots will engage in precision landing and take off manoeuvres with the shortest distance the winner. The ultimate goal is to establish some new world records at this spectacular aviation event!

Set to take place from the 14
th to 17th June 2018, this world's first ever vintage STOL competition is not only for modern specialised 'bush planes' it is also for the iconic visually stunning vintage biplanes and everyone in between.  They will enjoy the relatively smooth landings of the hard sand of a fine Belgian beach.

Throughout the event there will be exhibitors on the beachfront at Knokke-Heist for competitors and the thousands of spectators expected to attend the event. VintageAirRally will also establish a temporary exclusive 'Pilots Club' on the sand. The Pilots Club will be holding a series of events during both the day and the evenings with guest speakers from the world of aviation in Belgium and around the world.

There will be numerous categories for entries from vintage biplanes last seen in action in the 1920's and 30s to up-to-date aircraft ("bush planes") that can land in wildest locations. The winner of each category will be awarded a prize at this first ever STOL and beach landing competition in Belgium.

JANUARY 2018
2018 HAS STARTED OFF WITH THE CLOSURE OF THE FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM, GETTING THE DOA (DESIGN ORGANIZATION APPROVAL, EASA) AND THE START OF THE ASSEMBLY OF THE FIRST MODELS OF THE SONACA 200. IMPLEMENTATION OF AN AMBITIOUS INDUSTRIAL PROJECT IS BEING CONDUCTED IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH THE SONACA GROUP.

Review of the Sonaca 200 static and fatigue analyses

Sonaca Aircraft quite naturally turned to Sonaca for the sizing of the Sonaca 200. "The Sonaca Group has significant experience in the dimensioning and certification of aeronautical structures for aircraft in the CS-25 category for which the certification criteria are much more stringent than those of the Sonaca 200" pointed out Carl Dewandel, Structure Compliance Manager, Sonaca Aircraft.

Review of the Sonaca 200 static and fatigue analyses

The Sonaca 200 static and fatigue analyses were fully carried out under the SONIA calculation environment. "SONIA is able to solve very complex problems such as impact resistance, de-icing, nonlinear behavior, cases of large deformation, fatigue analyses and damage tolerance, etc" explained Albert- Paul Gonze, Sonaca "Digital Methods" Department Manager.

In the specific case of the Sonaca 200, the digital model included the 800 parts and 15,000 rivets which make up the aircraft. SONIA has allowed us to accurately calculate the safety coefficients andmaximize the reliability of all the elements.

EASA has issued the DOA certificate to Sonaca Aircraft

In accordance with 216/2008 (EC) and 748/2012 (EU) Regulations, EASA has issued the "Design Organization Approval" certificate to Sonaca Aircraft (Part 21, section A, Subpart J.). To obtain the DOA, Sonaca aircraft had to demonstrate to the competent authorities that it has the necessary organization, procedures, authorities and resources to design and certify a CS-VLA type aircraft (in reference to the Sonaca 200).

Getting the DOA proves that we have a high level of technical maturity and mastery of our product. Thanks to the DOA, Sonaca Aircraft will have the privilege to certify certain modifications or repairs. This will allow us to be very reactive towards customer requests

— Simon André, Head of Independent Monitoring at Sonaca Aircraft

Sonaca Aircraft has closed the flight tests

After having successfully carried out the static test program as well as all the tests for stability, noise, vibration, performance and stalling, the Sonaca 200 closed its flight test program with the spin tests which proved to be conclusive.

The flight certification campaign is now over. The Sonaca 200 will be EASA certified for a take-off weight (MTOW) of 750 kg and a cruising speed of 115 knots.

First deliveries starting in March 2018

The first aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in March of this year.
In 2018, Sonaca Aircraft will produce 3 aircraft per month and will increase its production capacity to 5 aircraft per month in 2019.
Our team is at your disposal to show you and let you try out the Sonaca 200.
