[vintage-and-warbirds] 30-Day Kickstarter Campaign Launches for B-29 Doc Flight Testing

Forwarded message - From: Jeff Rankin-Lowe siriusproductions

30-Day Kickstarter Campaign Launches for B-29 Doc Flight Testing
Doc's Friends seeking $137,500 in funds to get last-known airworthy B-29 in the air

WICHITA, Kan., Sept. 30, 2015 /CNW/ — After a 17-year restoration, Doc, the historic warbird that will soon become the second operational B-29 Superfortress, has now entered the flight-test stage. All four engines were successfully fired up on September 18 (http://tinyurl.com/o4ga62b) for the first time since 1956. But additional funding is needed to support this phase.

In an effort to raise those funds, Doc's Friends, the non-profit organization restoring the B-29 has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The group will have 30 days to reach their stated goal of $137,500. Costs associated with this amount include fuel, maintenance, insurance, and others.

Doc's Friends board member Tom Bertels says that the Kickstarter campaign timing could not be better. "Our passionate team of supporters and volunteers have accomplished what many said couldn't be done. Beginning today, there's a 30-day window for everyone else to step up and be a part of history."

In a show of support, Apollo 13 crewmembers Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, as well as former SR-71 pilot Buz Carpenter also offered their thoughts on the importance on restoring and preserving history such as Doc. Their comments were captured on camera and are viewable on the Kickstarter page (http://tinyurl.com/pt85o95).

Since Tony Mazzolini rescued Doc from the Mojave Desert in 1987, the restoration has been a universal effort. More than 300,000 volunteer hours have been devoted and thousands of aircraft parts donated and refurbished in-kind.

Kickstarter has an all-or-nothing rule, where the project can only collect funds if the stated goal has been reached by the set deadline. "Every single pledge will make a difference, whether it's $10, $25, or $1,000. It's simple to become one of Doc's Friends," said Bertels.

A direct link to the Kickstarter page can be found here (http://tinyurl.com/pt85o95). You can also follow Doc's Friends progress on their website (www.b-29doc.com), Facebook (www.facebook.com/DocsFriends), and Twitter (twitter.com/docsfriends).

Aircraft preservation : Hangar Flying : Restauration of the C-47 Dakota in Melsbroek

A great achievement when comparing with the state of this aircraft when recovered.
Restoring such an aircraft in a so short period of time is a real tour de force covered by an excellent article of our friends of Hangar Flying

Good show !

B-29 Restoration, "Doc" Enters Final Stage Before Flight

Warbirds News

August 12, 2015

PRESS RELEASE – Restoration of the B-29 Superfortress known as "Doc" is now entering its final stage. The countdown to her first flight is steadily approaching and Doc's Friends, the organization restoring the vintage bomber, is hopeful that "Doc" will take to the skies in the next few months.

Current State of Restoration

• The aircraft has been partially fueled and checked closely for leaks, with none occurring.
• The fuel system is currently being fine-tuned prior to pressurization and engine start.
• Turbocharger casings are now installed on all four engines.
• Engine exhaust system installations are nearly complete.
• Final avionics components are ready to install, including the intercoms required for ground and air operations.
• A Federal Aviation Administration review of the Aircraft Inspection Plan is in progress.

Next Steps

• Before the B-29 can fly, Doc's Friends must receive an Airworthiness Certificate from the FAA. Once the certificate is issued, Doc's Friends will submit an already-completed formal application to the U.S. Air Force requesting approval to operate Doc from McConnell Air Force Base during the flight-testing phase.
• Doc's Friends is currently evaluating options for the B-29′s permanent home base at the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. The organization will operate the aircraft as a flying museum to accomplish its intended mission.
• Doc's Friends' board of directors approved the launch of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help fund the costs of conducting the flight-testing phase of the program. Additional details will be released at a later date.

Help Hawker Typhoon JP843 project

Ian Slater is behind the project  www.hawkertyphoon.com and look for Hawker Typhoon parts for the projects

If you can help, please contact Ian.

See below for more details

I have been researching the Hawker Typhoon for the last 15 years with the aim of raising profile of the crews and aircraft, almost forgotten about with in the UK.  They saved many thousands of allied lives and many historians (as I do) believe that they even shortened the war however, it was not without a huge sacrifice.  Ground attack aircraft were extremely vulnerable and whenever they were hit then there was often little chance they could get out of the aircraft.  I began listing the surviving parts throughout the world (there are more than people think) and when I located a collection of original Hawker drawings and some Typhoon parts I changed the project to begin a rebuild of a cockpit section. A few years ago I actually managed to recover the complete read fuselage from Typhoon RB396 in the Netherlands which finally gave the project and identity and another change of direction, to restore RB396 completely.

Since the release of the first version of the web site (www.hawkertyphoon.com) the response has been incredible and with help from the grandson of a Typhoon veteran, who wanted to help after seeing the site, a Facebook page was launched which has really raised the profile of the Crews, Typhoon and the project.

Daniel Brackx forwarded your contact information after our contact seeking information on surviving Typhoon components, a pleasure to be in touch. I am currently restoring a late model Hawker Typhoon with the identity of JP843, the goal of the project is to return this aircraft to airworthy status with the understanding that there are enormous hurdles to overcome along the way. At present, the project is in need of wing and tail components for use as patterns during the construction process, while I have secured a volume of technical drawings and spare parts, these areas aren't fully covered and any surviving components are needed to complete the missing data. As the project is in Canada, it is often difficult to find collectors and museums that know of remaining components. Would you know of any groups or organisations involved with recovering or displaying remaining Typhoon components that may be willing to provide information or items for reverse engineering purposes (items would be returned once data is collected)?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Ian Slater

Inside a modern biplane factory - Retrotec

Thx Louis for sharing,
Forwarded message - From: Louis Nève

In Pictures: Inside a modern biplane factory

In a complex of hangars deep in the Sussex countryside, a team of engineers is restoring and rebuilding early 20th Century aircraft. The brainchild of engineer Guy Black, Retrotec is actually modern biplane factory.
It specialises in rare examples of World War One planes including a Bristol F2B Fighter and DH9 bomber; as well as Hawker Nimrods, a Hawker Fury and a Hawker Hart from the 1930s era.
The company has clients including museums and private customers.
"We only do aeroplanes that no one else wants to do!" says Retrotec's Guy Black. This restored 1930s Hawker Fury fighter is the only one flying in the world
