by Huw Hopkins
When the Royal Air Force's No. 1 Squadron moved to France in September 1939 they were regarded as one of the finest squadrons in one of the finest air forces in the world. However, whilst being exemplary flyers, during the course of the Battle of France the Luftwaffe would test their mettle in combat for the first time. Despite maintaining their reputation of excellence into the field of combat and achieving much success, the relentless toil in the skies over France would take its toll on the men of No. 1 Squadron. Huw Hopkins charts this period in the squadron's illustrious history.
