Battle of France 75 – Pt.8 – No. 1 Squadron Hurricane exploits in France

by Huw Hopkins
When the Royal Air Force's No. 1 Squadron moved to France in September 1939 they were regarded as one of the finest squadrons in one of the finest air forces in the world. However, whilst being exemplary flyers, during the course of the Battle of France the Luftwaffe would test their mettle in combat for the first time. Despite maintaining their reputation of excellence into the field of combat and achieving much success, the relentless toil in the skies over France would take its toll on the men of No. 1 Squadron. Huw Hopkins charts this period in the squadron's illustrious history.

It's finally the season to be jolly again as the airshow season returns, kicking off in sensational style with the Shuttleworth Collection, based at Old Warden, just west of Biggleswade. Commemorating 70 years since Victory in Europe, the season premiere event was a thoroughly enjoyable day out despite Mother Nature's best efforts to scupper the flying programme. Kieran Lear donned the suncream...and the anorak, and writes for GAR! With photographs by James Wheeler.

Vintage Aviation – The Great War Display Team: Creating the Spectacle

The Great War Display Team (GWDT) has long been a staple of the British airshow circuit. With the World War One centenary commemorations being a focal point at many events between 2014 and 2018, the team is in the midst of its busiest airshow seasons to date. Elliott Marsh recently sat down with GWDT Team Leader Gordon Brander and Junkers CL1 pilot Richie Piper to discuss how the team produces its trademark "whirling historical carousel".

Aviation Feature – The Bombing of Dresden, 13/14 February 1945

by Elliott Marsh
On the night of 13/14 February 1945, RAF Bomber Command carried out a raid on the city of Dresden, the capital of Saxony, Germany. For all intents and purposes, this was a standard mission undertaken in much the same way as any other sortie; yet, in the wake of the tremendous loss of life and destruction it caused, it would be regarded as one of the most controversial events of World War Two. 70 years on, Elliott Marsh draws together the experiences of the men who partook in the raid and the civilians they bombed to tell the story of the fateful night which seared the name 'Dresden' into the annals of history.
