As of 12 October 2025, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) is being gradually rolled out at the European Union's borders, including at Brussels South Charleroi Airport.
What is the Entry/Exit System? This innovative system marks an important step in the modernisation of border controls. Its aim is to reinforce security, improve the management of passenger flows and gradually replace the manual stamping of passports with a digital record of entry to and exit from the Schengen area. The EES applies to non-European travellers visiting the European Union for a short stay of up to 90 days, whether they hold a visa or are visa-exempt. European citizens and long-term residents are not affected by this system.
How does the Entry/Exit System work? When crossing the border, the traveller's details – such as identity, date, place of entry or exit – will be recorded electronically, in accordance with European Regulation (EU) 2017/2226. This system will automatically check compliance with entry and residence conditions, as well as immediately detecting any irregularities (overstays, ban on entry etc.). Thanks to this new technology, border controls will be faster and more efficient, as well as guaranteeing a high level of security. The gradual roll-out of the system will take place over a period of six months, with full implementation by 10 April 2026. Working closely with the relevant authorities, Brussels South Charleroi Airport will help travellers during this transitional phase and provide them with all the information they need to make their travel arrangements easier. |
