However, whilst being exemplary flyers, during the course of the Battle of France the Luftwaffe would test their mettle in combat for the first time. Despite maintaining their reputation of excellence into the field of combat and achieving much success, the relentless toil in the skies over France would take its toll on the men of No. 1 Squadron. Une équipe de l'ULg a étudié comment les gouttes se vaporisent et a publié ses résultats dans une revue scientifique professionnelle. Cette expérience a été menée à l'aide d'une impressionnante centrifugeuse localisée à l'ESTEC, le cœur technique de l'ESA, à Noordwijk aux Pays-Bas, et s'inscrivait dans le programme Spin your Thesis! de l'unité éducation de l'ESA.
