[Brussels Airport] Unique cooperation between Brussels Airport, Liege Airport, and Ostend-Bruges Airport for digitalisation of cargo customs processes

Forwarded message - From: Brussels Airport

Unique cooperation between Brussels Airport, Liege Airport, and Ostend-Bruges Airport for digitalisation of cargo customs processes Brussels Airport, Liege Airport, and Ostend-Bruges Airport are aligning their approaches to the new digital support system for cargo companies’ customs processes. This is being coordinated by air cargo operator Air Cargo Belgium in collaboration with LGG Connect. Through the airports’ community platforms, companies will be able to uniformly exchange customs declarations for import, export, and transit with Belgian customs. To enable this, the airports use the same principles and interfaces, each on their own platform. This unified approach will facilitate customs processes, further strengthening Belgium’s position as a logistics hub for international trade. In the coming months, this unified approach will be developed and rolled out.

Unique cooperation between Brussels Airport, Liege Airport, and Ostend-Bruges Airport for digitalisation of cargo customs processes

Brussels Airport, Liege Airport, and Ostend-Bruges Airport are aligning their approaches to the new digital support system for cargo companies’ customs processes.

Today, air cargo companies still exchange part of the electronic customs messages with Customs and Excise through the Paperless Customs and Excise system. Meanwhile, the transition to MASP-C has been initiated, the European multi-annual strategic plan for the modernisation of customs. Within the framework of MASP-C, cargo companies will be able to smoothly follow the further digitalisation of customs processes at the European level through their airport’s community platforms.

Specifically, air cargo companies will be able to submit their Temporary Storage Declarations digitally via a new portal on their airport’s data platform: BRUCloud for the cargo community at Brussels Airport and LGG Tracking at Liege Airport. Both platforms will work in the same way for exchanging customs messages. They will also each be separately connected to electronic customs systems for further processing and follow-up of declarations. The customs office’s counter notification is then sent back to the companies via the portal.

Unified approach increases efficiency of customs processes

The standardised approach not only leads to more efficient customs processes, but also strengthens Belgium’s position as a logistics hub for international trade. Indeed, one uniform way of working across different airports will make it even easier and more attractive for foreign companies to import and export through Belgian airports.

Unique cooperation within Belgian aviation

To develop this new digital approach, Brussels Airport and Liege Airport are joining forces, a unique collaboration in the Belgian aviation sector. Ostend-Bruges Airport is also joining the initiative. The project is coordinated by Air Cargo Belgium, which represents the interests of cargo companies at Brussels Airport and LGG Connect, the Liege airport community organisation. In the coming months, the digital portal will be further developed to be operational before the end of 2026.

“Brussels Airport has been committed to the digitalisation of cargo processes for years. The development of this new digital integration is fully in line with our strategy to further strengthen the efficiency of air cargo operations through innovative and digital solutions. At the same time, we are contributing to a unified approach at the Belgian level, making Brussels Airport and our country even more interesting as a logistics hub for international trade,” said Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport.

“Thanks to its unique relationship with our operational stakeholders, Air Cargo Belgium enjoys the full confidence of both the General Administration of Customs & Excise (AAD&A) and our members. Our recent accession to the National Forum Steering Committee at the AAD&A confirms this mandate. This builds upon the cooperation agreement (BAC-ACB-AAD&A) of 2023 and the MoU we signed with our handlers in 2024, each time focusing on uniform, digital customs development for the entire air cargo sector,” said Freek De Witte, Director at Air Cargo Belgium.

“This collaboration reflects our shared ambition to strengthen Belgium’s position as a leading European logistics hub. At Liege Airport, we strongly believe in digital innovation and seamless cooperation across the cargo ecosystem to improve transparency, efficiency, and compliance in international trade flows. At Liege Airport, cargo is at the heart of our strategy. This joint initiative is a concrete step towards more efficient, transparent, and digitally enabled cargo operations across Belgium, benefiting our customers, partners, and authorities alike.”, said Laurent Jossart, CEO Liege Airport.

New sustainable building for Safran Aircraft Engine Services at Brussels Airport

Maintenance shop for latest-generation aircraft engines

At Brussels Airport, the new building for Safran Aircraft Engine Services Brussels, a subsidiary of engine manufacturer Safran Aircraft Engines, was inaugurated today. It houses a new maintenance shop for the LEAP-1 engines of latest generation aircraft. This building was realised by Brussels Airport Company, in the North Zone of the airport. This new site is both Net Zero Carbon and energy positive, which is fully in line with Brussels Airport's strategy of providing quality infrastructure for its customers and fully committing to a sustainable future.

Safran Aircraft Engine Services Brussels has moved into its new site at Brussels Airport, in an 8,500 m2 maintenance shop built by Brussels Airport Company. The new building meets the highest environmental standards and is carbon neutral thanks to the use of 100% renewable energy, including solar panels on the roof and circular heating systems. The building also produces more energy than it consumes, making it energy-positive.

"We are delighted to welcome Safran Aircraft Engine Services to a brand new building at Brussels Airport. This state-of-the-art facility is an important milestone in our partnership of over 23 years with Safran and underlines our commitment to provide first-class infrastructure and support to our logistics partners,' said Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport Company. "With advanced energy-efficient technologies and a sustainable design, this new facility not only improves operational efficiency but also reflects our commitment to a sustainable future. We are incredibly pleased with this important realisation within our successful and long-standing partnership with Safran."

This new maintenance workshop will contribute to the development of Safran Aircraft Engines' global maintenance network and support the growth of the LEAP maintenance activities. The LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B engines power most of the new generation A320neo and B737 MAX aircraft. This new facility strengthens the existing capacity of Safran Aircraft Engine Services Brussels, which has been part of the Brussels Airport ecosystem for almost a quarter of a century.

'We are delighted to strengthen our industrial footprint within the Brussels Airport ecosystem, where we can count on the highest standards in terms of low-carbon infrastructure and competences,' said Jean-Paul Alary, President of Safran Aircraft Engines. 'This new facility is an essential link in our global MRO network to support the growing fleet of LEAP engines worldwide while reducing the carbon footprint of our operations.'

Safran Aircraft Engine Services Brussels became the first workshop in the world to be certified for LEAP-1A maintenance in 2016 and has more than 75 years of experience in aircraft engine maintenance, repair and overhaul. This new-generation LEAP-1A engine, in use by more than 150 airlines worldwide, offers a 15-20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as a significant improvement in noise levels compared with previous-generation engines.

Safran started its first operations at the new site at Brussels Airport this year and is eventually targeting around 120 workshop visits per year. There are already plans for an expansion project to accommodate the maintenance activities of the LEAP modules, currently carried out at SAESB's historic site, by the end of this decade. This increase in engine and module activities is supported by an ambitious recruitment plan for more than 220 people by 2027, on top of the current 250 employees.

More than 1.7 million passengers
at Brussels Airport in March

Almost 65,000 tons of cargo shipped

In the month of March Brussels Airport again received more than 1.7 million passengers, an increase of 9% compared with March 2023. And that despite the slight negative impact of the temporary cancellation of flights to Israel, and social unrest at some airlines. The total volume of transported cargo decreased slightly by 2% to reach almost 65,000 tonnes.

Passengers: +9% compared to March 2023

In March, Brussels Airport welcomed 1,742,478 passengers, 9% more than in March 2023. The suspension of Tel Aviv-bound flights continued to have a negative impact on passenger numbers, though there was a limited resumption of flights in late March. The strikes at Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa also had a negative impact, as did the announcement of the strike at Brussels Airlines, which could ultimately be averted.

The proportion of departing transfer passengers was almost 17%, showing an increase in the number of intercontinental passengers.

The top 10 countries in March were Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, the United States, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Morocco and Portugal.

The first quarter of 2024 saw a total of 4.7 million passengers, almost 10% more than in 2023. The proportion of transfer passengers thereby remained stable with growth in intercontinental travellers and fewer intra-European travellers.

Cargo volumes: down 2% from March 2023

Total cargo volumes through Brussels Airport fell by 2% in March compared to March 2023, reaching almost 65,000 tonnes. Flown cargo volumes also experienced a small decline of almost 2% to a total of 54,000 tonnes.

There was a 5% decrease in the full freighter segment, while belly cargo increased by 20%, in line with increasing capacity in terms of passenger flights. Express services are down 9% and trucked volumes are also down 5%.

The main import regions are Asia, with a strong increase of 42% compared to March 2023 due to an increase in e-commerce, Africa (+3%) and North America (-21%). The main export region is again Asia (-23%), followed by Africa (-1%) and North America (-30%).

In terms of cargo volumes, there was a slight growth of 1% in the first quarter. Flown cargo volumes registered growth of 2% this quarter.

Aircraft movements: 3% increase compared to March 2023

There were 15,237 aircraft movements in March, up 3% from March 2023. The number of passenger flights increased by 7% compared to 2023. In March 2024, there were an average of 140 passengers per flight, two more passengers than last year. The number of cargo flights fell by almost 10%, mainly due to the decrease in express flights.
