Bugatti airplane replica makes its first flight by Yaşar Kara This July, we heard about how a group of aviation enthusiasts were building a flying replica of the radical Bugatti 100P racing aircraft. Named Reve Bleu (Blue Dream), it was undergoing taxi and engine testing at the time. This Wednesday in Tulsa, Oklahoma, however, it made its first flight – and did a nose-plant at the end. Ettore Bugatti began construction on the original 100P in 1937, but had to put the project on hold when the Second World War began. Among the aircraft's unique features were forward-swept wings, two slant-mounted Bugatti Type 50 engines located behind the cockpit, and two contra-rotating propellers. Unfortunately the aircraft never did fly, and although it has since been restored, its engineless shell is too fragile to be airworthy. Reve Bleu is highly faithful to the size, power, and shape of the original, although it also incorporates modern amenities such as fiberglass construction and machined alloy fittings. Bugatti 100P : nouvel envol pour le Rêve Bleu

Après un premier vol en août dernier qui s’était soldé par la casse de ses deux hélices, c’est une légende des airs qui a fait son second vol de test le 17 octobre dernier. La réplique du Bugatti 100P, construite aux Etats-Unis par un groupe de passionnés, surnommée le Rêve Bleu, est ainsi repartie pour une série de tests.

L'appareil est monté à une centaine de pieds et a atteint la vitesse de 110 noeuds. Seule surprise: au moment de se poser, l'appareil a flotté de façon significative. Quand enfin il s'est posé, une défaillance du frein droit a sorti l'appareil à gauche de la piste. Une fois sorti de la piste, le sol rendu meuble par la pluie de ces derniers jours a fait passer le Bugatti 100P sur le nez, endommageant les hélices et la casserole. Les moteurs de moto Hayabusa qui propulsent le Bugatti ne devraient pas avoir souffert car ils sont couplés à un embrayage, qui aura subi le plus gros d'éventuelles contraintes liées au choc. Le Bugatti 100P était un projet d'avion de course d'Ettore Bugatti, qui devait participer à la coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe en 1939.
