B-29 Restoration, "Doc" Enters Final Stage Before Flight

Warbirds News

August 12, 2015

PRESS RELEASE – Restoration of the B-29 Superfortress known as "Doc" is now entering its final stage. The countdown to her first flight is steadily approaching and Doc's Friends, the organization restoring the vintage bomber, is hopeful that "Doc" will take to the skies in the next few months.

Current State of Restoration

• The aircraft has been partially fueled and checked closely for leaks, with none occurring.
• The fuel system is currently being fine-tuned prior to pressurization and engine start.
• Turbocharger casings are now installed on all four engines.
• Engine exhaust system installations are nearly complete.
• Final avionics components are ready to install, including the intercoms required for ground and air operations.
• A Federal Aviation Administration review of the Aircraft Inspection Plan is in progress.

Next Steps

• Before the B-29 can fly, Doc's Friends must receive an Airworthiness Certificate from the FAA. Once the certificate is issued, Doc's Friends will submit an already-completed formal application to the U.S. Air Force requesting approval to operate Doc from McConnell Air Force Base during the flight-testing phase.
• Doc's Friends is currently evaluating options for the B-29′s permanent home base at the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. The organization will operate the aircraft as a flying museum to accomplish its intended mission.
• Doc's Friends' board of directors approved the launch of a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help fund the costs of conducting the flight-testing phase of the program. Additional details will be released at a later date.

[vintage-and-warbirds] Plans for "Nationwide" Warbird Flyover

Forwarded message - From: SIRIUS

Plans for "Nationwide" Warbird Flyover

By Glenn Pew
AVwebFlash

December 4, 2013

Aviation heritage organizations are organizing to create a "nationwide
flyover of WWII aircraft" Aug. 15-16, 2015, commemorating the 70th
anniversary of the end of World War II, but the event may not be what you
think. The Chennault Foundation describes the nationwide flyover as taking
place in communities throughout America. Groups involved in the event
include the History Channel, the Air Force Association, EAA Warbirds of
America, the Commemorative Air Force, and a host of other groups.

It's not precisely clear if "nationwide" will translate to many local events
or one grand one, but an official announcement on Dec. 20 will provide more
details. The press conference will be hosted by the Chennault Aviation &
Military Museum, which holds its own direct ties to aviation's rich history.

The executive director of Chennault Aviation & Military Museum is Nell
Calloway, the granddaughter of Gen. Claire Chennault, whose Flying Tigers
group entered World War II in the skies over China on Dec. 20, 1941. The
group is credited as a first counterattack against Japan following Pearl
Harbor.

Said Calloway, "My grandfather and the Flying Tigers helped lay the
foundations for what became the U.S. Air Force and are a fitting symbol for
a movement to pay tribute to the achievements of American Airpower during
WWII."

One goal of the planned flyover is to raise and maintain public awareness of
historic aircraft with the hope of maintaining them in flyable condition.
