DH 89A Dragon Rapide ZK-SWR (ex BAF D-7) heading for Germany

We say goodbye to an old friend.
The DH Dragon Rapide ZK-SWR took off from the Bridge Pa airfield in Hastings last Saturday ( 12 th Jan) bound for Ardmore in the safe hands of Chris Hart the Pilot and part owner along with Steve Turner another part owner and his family In the coming weeks the Rapide will be stripped of it’s wings and made ready for the sea voyage back to Germany to it’s new owners.
A little bit about it’s background (Belgian Air Force De Havilland DH.89A Rapide C.1, D-7 (RAF NR777, c/n 6853) was struck off charge on 8 July 1955 and ending up stored away in a hangar at Deurne airport. Although this was known to the aeronautical world not all that many people had seen this aircraft before it was sold in 1994 to Ron Sough in the UK. In 1995 however a group of aviation enthusiast around Benno Tissi acquired the D-7 which was shipped from Southampton to New Zealand. Restoration started in Mandeville, NZ, with Croydon Aircraft Company, but it had to move from there and in 2001 the project was taken over by Southair of Taieri, Dunedin, NZ. Since then ZK-SWR, as the aircraft is registered now, has taken to the air and has moved to the Hawkes Bay Airport, Napier NZ.)

Five killed in Cessna crash on take off from Charleroi airport.
Op de luchthaven van
Brussels South in Charleroi is een Cessna-vliegtuigje met 5 inzittenden
neergestort. Niemand van hen overleefde de crash. De luchthaven is
tot 14.30 uur afgesloten voor alle verkeer. Alle vluchten van of naar
Charleroi worden afgeleid.
Het sportvliegtuigje zou problemen hebben
gehad bij het opstijgen. De piloot probeerde daarop rechtsomkeer te
maken naar de luchthaven van Charleroi maar dat mislukte. Het toestel
stortte naast de landingsbaan neer.
Het toestel had vijf mensen aan boord. Volgens de website van La
Dernière Heure waren drie van hen kinderen. De slachtoffers zouden
afkomstig zijn uit Ukkel.
De schade zou aanzienlijk zijn. Rond de plaats van het ongeluk hangt
veel rook. De luchthaven van Charleroi is afgesloten voor alle verkeer.

L’aéroport de Charleroi (BSCA) sera fermé samedi
jusqu’à 14h30 après le crash d’un avion Cessna en bordure de piste
samedi vers 10h00, selon les annonces faites dans l’aéroport à
destination des voyageurs. Le crash a fait cinq morts. L’avion, parti pour un vol privé, a connu des
problèmes dès le décollage et a tenté de revenir à l’aéroport. C’est en
atterrissant qu’il s’est écrasé.

Belgische C-130 beschadigd na vogelaanvaring in Mali
Eén van
de twee C-130 Hercules-toestellen, die ons land momenteel inzet tijdens
de operatie SERVAL, ter ondersteuning van de Franse troepen in Mali,
heeft een bird strike (botsing met een vogel) opgelopen. Dit gebeurde
tijdens de landing op het vliegveld van Timboektoe in Mali.
Het
transportvliegtuig, met staartnummer CH-01, liep daarbij schade op aan
de rechtervleugel. Op de plaats van de vogelimpact is een gat van 20 bij
30 cm geslagen in de aanvalsboord (leading edge, voorkant) van het
vleugeloppervlak. De vliegveiligheid van het vliegtuig en zijn bemanning
is nooit in gevaar gekomen.
Ter plekke werd een
grondige inspectie van de elektrische bekabeling en van de hydraulische
leidingen in de vleugel uitgevoerd. Hierbij werd geen bijkomende schade
vastgesteld. De bemanning voerde een spoedherstelling op de beplating
van de vleugel uit volgens de, in de technische documentatie van het
vliegtuig, voorgeschreven procedures. Het toestel heeft vervolgens nog
één vlucht gemaakt naar de luchthaven van Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso
waar de nodige voorzieningen voor handen zijn om een definitieve
herstelling uit te voeren. Defensie stuurde onmiddellijk de nodige
wisselstukken om het vliegtuig op de kortst mogelijke termijn weer
operationeel te maken. De vooruitzichten zijn dat het toestel morgen opnieuw inzetbaar is. (Source: Defensie)

Marine Alouette III damaged at sea on board Dutch Navy Oceangoing Patrol Vessel Hr.Ms. Friesland
‘Vliegende oldtimer’ van het Belgische leger begeeft het – Een Alouette III-helikopter van onze Marine staat aan boord van het Nederlandse marineschip Friesland die op weg naar de Caraïben is in het kader van een operatie rond drugssmokkel. Het toestel is bij ruwe zee gaan schuiven en daardoor is het staartstuk afgebroken. Woordvoerster van Defensie Ingrid Baeck meldt dat eind deze week, na aankomst op het eiland Curaçao, de schade kan hersteld worden.Source: Het Nieuwsblad
