The heady days of the early 1910s are long past. Today, flying a plane or helicopter is expensive and challenging — it is also fun and amazing, of course.  Yet what if you could fly without having a pilot certificate, an airplane or a flight instructor?  What if all it took was a set of modern electronics, some cameras and a rather specialized rig that puts you into the cockpit of a radio controlled airplane — if only virtually?

He was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, which he joined before the United States officially entered the war. He is most famous for his poem "High Flight..."

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, high-performance, supersonic interceptor aircraft originally developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) by Lockheed. One of the Century Series of aircraft, it served with the USAF from 1958 until 1969, and continued with Air National Guard units until it was phased out in 1975. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) flew a small mixed fleet of F-104 types in supersonic flight tests and spaceflight programs until they were retired in 1994.

USAF F-104Cs saw service during the Vietnam War, and F-104A aircraft were deployed by Pakistan briefly during the Indo-Pakistani wars. Republic of China Air Force (Taiwan) F-104s also engaged the People's Liberation Army Air Force (China) over the disputed island of Quemoy. The ultimate production version of the basic fighter-model F-104 was the F-104S all-weather interceptor designed by Aeritalia for the Italian Air Force, and equipped with radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrow missiles. An advanced F-104 with a high-mounted wing, known as the CL-1200 Lancer, did not proceed past the mock-up stage.

A set of modifications produced the F-104G model, which won a NATO competition for a new fighter-bomber. Several two-seat trainer versions were also produced, the most numerous being the TF-104G. A total of 2,578 Starfighters were eventually produced, mostly by NATO members. The F-104 served with the air forces of over a dozen nations. The operational service of the Starfighter ended with its retirement by the Italian Air Force in May 2004, some 46 years after its introduction in 1958 by the USAF...

Background and early development

Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, the chief engineer at Lockheed's Skunk Works, visited Korea in December 1951 and spoke with fighter pilots about what sort of aircraft they wanted. At the time, the U.S. pilots were confronting the MiG-15 with North American F-86 Sabres, and many of the American pilots felt that the MiGs were superior to the larger and more complex American design. The pilots requested a small and simple aircraft with excellent performance. Armed with this new-found information, Johnson immediately started the design of such an aircraft, following his return to the United States. In March, his team was assembled; they studied several aircraft designs, ranging from small designs at 8,000 lb (3,629 kg), to fairly large ones at 50,000 lb (23,680 kg). In order to achieve the desired performance, Lockheed chose a minimalist approach: a design that would achieve high performance by wrapping the lightest, most aerodynamically efficient airframe possible around a single powerful engine. The engine chosen was the new General Electric J79, an engine of dramatically improved performance compared to contemporary designs. The small L-246 design powered by a single J79 remained essentially identical to the L-083 Starfighter as eventually delivered.

The design was presented to the Air Force in November 1952, and they were interested enough to create a General Operating Requirement for a lightweight fighter to replace the North American F-100. Three companies replied to the requirement: the Republic AP-55, an improved version of its prototype XF-91 Thunderceptor; the North American NA-212, which would eventually evolve into the F-107; and the Northrop N-102 Fang, another J79-powered design. Although all were interesting, Lockheed had an insurmountable lead, and was granted a development contract in March 1953 for two prototypes, these were given the designation "XF-104"...

 Gleen Gardiner est décédé au Canada en décembre 2012. Juste avant sa mort, il a émis le souhait, à sa fille Ann, de reposer auprès des membres de son équipage, dans le cimetière de Neufchâteau. Une dernière volonté qu'elle a tenu à exaucer. Elle a donc pris contact avec la commune de Neufchâteau qui a organisé une cérémonie commémorative.

Petits conseils d'utilisation :
Mode plein écran = F11:  Le site est plus agréable à visionner en mode plein écran. Pour y accéder, il suffit de taper sur la touche F11. C'est un raccourci de Windows qui fait disparaître les barres de titre et de menus pour n'afficher que le contenu de la fenêtre active. Les menus masqués restent néanmoins accessibles,  vous les retrouverez en déplaçant  la souris vers le bord supérieur de l'écran. Pour quitter ce mode plein écran, il suffit de taper à nouveau sur la touche F11 et le tour est joué.

Diaporama et clavier : Le diaporama est aussi commandable au clavier. La flèche gauche ou droite vous permet d'accéder à l'image précédente ou suivante. La barre d'espacement permet de le mettre en pause et une seconde pression sur la barre d'espacement relance le défilement automatique.

Jean-Luc Soullier et sa société Luxfer, conçoivent des drones. Mais ce pilote chevronné est aussi détenteur d'une dizaine de records du monde (FAI) établis avec son avion électrique, la Luciole MC30-E.
La machine fait 11m d'envergure et 7 m de long, pour un poids de 113 kg batteries comprises ! il atteint une vitesse de 189,87 km/h, et monte à 2 366 m d'altitude, mais il pourrait se hisser jusqu'à 3 500 m ! Il se recharge en 2h15 sur une prise domestique. Il décole sur une distance de 62 m. Une batterie de 33 kg offre une autonomie de 55 minutes de vol à 125 km/h. Mais cet avion a bien évolué depuis ces premiers essais en 2011.
Il vient de réaliser un tour des Etats-Unis et son avion, actuellement sous douane, sera présenté sous les Arcades du Cinquantenaire au E-BRUSSELS !

En 1944, un combat aérien a vu l'affrontement de deux avions :  l'un britannique, l'autre allemand.  Les restes de ce dernier, pris en chasse par un pilote de chasse anglais, viennent d'être exhumés sur le site de Launoy à Pont-à-Celles.
