L'appareil aurait eu une panne moteur peu après le décollage, contraignant Davies à se poser dans un champ. L'aile gauche du Spitfire a été arrachée lors de l'impact. Le Spitfire MJ772 a servi avec le No 341 Squadron "Alsace" des Forces Aériennes Françaises Libres durant la guerre. Il fut converti en biplace en 1950-51 et vendu à l'Irish Air Corps. Converti en Mk IX monoplace en 1992, il a été reconverti en biplace par Meier Motors récemment.
