2024 : Welcome on board

Agissons.

2024 : Welcome on board !

With the climate emergency so acute that people are tempted to put their head in the sand, SolarStratos is approaching 2024 more determined than ever. Our mission this year is to set a record for the highest electric solar-powered flight in history. Everything is in place, both from a technological and administrative point of view, and with our permit to fly (PTF) secured, the whole team is looking forward to taking off again. Stay tuned, we are excited to share some new and memorable moments with you as the year unfolds. Welcome aboard for the next flight!

The Copernicus report is chilling

Copernicus confirmed on the 8 January that 2023 was the hottest year on record. 'For at least 100,000 years' according to the Observatory. The report also signalled a global temperature of 1.48°C more than average putting our world on the brink of the maximum +1.5°C threshold envisaged in the Paris agreement. The ocean is suffering from record temperatures. And the highest concentration of greenhouse gases was recorded in the atmosphere. These are all chilling facts that make the SolarStratos mission all the more compelling. Living and flying on solar power means that people can embrace a sustainable low-carbon future today. Let's act.

Press review 2023: We make solar energy shine

Beyond the challenge of flying to the stratosphere, SolarStratos aims to be a communications platform to raise awareness and promote solar energy. Our 2023 press review shows that the adventure is having an impact. By sharing the successes, records, and pitfalls, we are spreading our sustainability message far and wide. Through five press releases, 12 newsletters, hundreds of social media posts with a reach of up to 250,000 people, plus several dozen videos (347,000 views for the 2023 highlights on Facebook) and reels achieving up to 4.2 million views (16.5 million for 7 short reels), plus thousands of likes and comments of encouragement – we can continue to dream! SAF incentive programme

What better way to start the new year than with the support of the Belgian government who will be granting a special financial contribution to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel? Brussels Airport expressed the ambition to significantly increase the SAF uptake as part of Stargate. The SAF incentive will be available to all passenger and cargo airlines for both short-haul and long-haul flights departing from Brussels Airport in 2024. The incentive program is one of the measures to accelerate the sustainable development of aviation and promote the use of SAF.

Mobility data sharing in Athens

Athens International Airport (AIA) has two promising projects in the pipeline for 2024. The first consists of implementing the "Mobility Data Sharing" initiative to revolutionize employee mobility. The second project aims to substantially reduce the total weight of waste collected from screening areas by providing passengers with dedicated bins for liquid disposal prior to security screening.

Succesful implementation of mobility solutions

Stargate's Sustainable Airport Mobility Plan (SAMP) of the lighthouse airport provides a technical and policy strategy for coordinated and balanced development of the accessibility of the airport and the mobility services for passengers, employees, visitors and logistical flows. It combines a description of the current situation with recommendations on how to realize the intermodal hub to optimize the airport traffic flow. The first version of the SAMP helped to select and prioritise concrete measures such as the carpooling community and the bike test.

Connecting Europe by Air

Save the date! The European Commission's Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport is organising the Connecting Europe Days, Europe's flagship mobility event, from 2 to 5 April 2024 in Brussels. As part of this occasion, a side event entitled Connecting Europe by Air will be co-organised with Brussels Airport Company and take place in the Skyhall. This event will gather policy makers and aviation industry stakeholders to discuss the role of aviation in ensuring the connectivity and sustainability of the European transport system.

Joined forces for circular airports

On the initiative of TULIPS, the EU Green Deal projects for greener aviation set up a working group on circular airport operations. Regular meetings with circularity experts from TULIPS, OLGA, Stargate and Alight will enhance the exchange of knowledge and best practices. The circularity group is the first out of seven potential working groups within the green airports cluster, since existing collaboration on the topics of SAF, Hydrogen Ground Services and Intermodal mobility is expected to formalize in the coming months as well.

From responsible to respectful flying

With the introduction of the Respectful Flying Charter comprising 9 principles that focus on fleet renewal, reduced carbon emissions and innovative partnerships, Stargate community partner Brussels Airlines broadens its scope from responsible to respectful flying.

Budapest Airport excels in greener aircraft and ESG

Budapest Airport ended 2023 with great results in terms of sustainability. An ESG assessment ranked our fellow airport among the top 50 transport companies worldwide. Moreover, almost a third of aircraft movements at Budapest Airport were carried out with new generation aircraft. More information about BUD's sustainability actions and ambitions can be found in their second sustainability report.
