Vega to fly ESA experimental reentry vehicle

The launch of ESA's IXV Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle on Europe's new Vega rocket is now in detailed planning, a major step towards the craft's flight in 2014.
Launched into a suborbital trajectory from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, IXV will return to Earth as if from a low-orbit mission, to test and qualify new critical technologies for future reentry vehicles.

Le ciel est bas sur Florennes en ce début d'après-midi. A quelques dizaines de mètres de la piste secondaire, entre deux hangarettes, se dresse un petit bâtiment en briques, le "QRA". A l'intérieur, quatre hommes : deux techniciens et deux pilotes. Ils ont pris la relève de leurs collègues à 8 heures du matin. Tous les quatre, ils vont effectuer un tour de garde un peu particulier pendant 24 heures.
