Renovation works on runway 07R/25L at Brussels Airport from 12 July to 27 August 2025

This summer, Brussels Airport will carry out major renovation works on runway 07R/25L. These works are essential to maintain the safety and smooth operation of air traffic. Runway 07R/25L will receive a new asphalt surface, upgraded lighting, and improved drainage. By scheduling these works in the summer, the renovation can be done in less than 2 months' time.

This week, Brussels Airport will start major renovation works on runway 07R/25L, the southernmost runway of the airport and one of the main runways for take-offs and landings. This runway will undergo a complete renovation involving both the top layer and the first lower layer of asphalt, and will be equipped with new runway lights and an improved drainage system. These works are essential to maintain the safety and smooth operation of air traffic in the long term. In total 290,000 m² of asphalt will be replaced, equivalent to 40 football fields. The last renovation work of this scale on this runway dates back to 2015.

Renovation work will take place from July 12 to August 27 2025, mainly Monday through Saturday, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. During the renovation period, runway 07R/25L will be completely closed to air traffic. If, due to certain circumstances, delays occur, it may be necessary to continue work at night and/or on Sundays in order to complete the work within the allotted time frame. In addition, between August 2 and August 12, runway 01/19 will also be closed for safety reasons due to work being carried out at its intersection with the runway undergoing renovation. During this period, work will be carried out continuously, 24 hours a day, and only runway 07L/25R will remain operational.

Runway use during the works

By executing these works in the summer, the weather conditions are optimal, and the works will take the least amount of time. During the works, it will not always be possible to apply the PRS (Preferential Runway System), but the works are scheduled in such a way to limit the impact.

It is the air traffic controller skeyes that decides on the runway use, based on runway availability and weather conditions, with the primary aim of ensuring the safety of air navigation. You can find more information on runway use and a real-time overview on www.batc.be.

During the works, landings on runway 07L will follow a special satellite-based navigation procedure (RNP, Required Navigation Performance). This is necessary because this runway does not have a precision approach system. The procedure is fully compliant with European safety regulations. All other flight procedures will remain unchanged.

These runway works should have little impact on airport operations, though (limited) delays cannot be excluded. It is important to maintain the runways and keep them in optimal condition to ensure the safety of air traffic in the future.
