[Brussels Airport Company] PMV, the Flemish investment company, acquires additional stake in Brussels Airport Company

Forwarded message - From: Press Office - Brussels Airport Company

PMV, the Flemish investment company, acquires additional stake in Brussels Airport Company

Today, PMV, the Flemish investment company reached an agreement with the Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) to acquire its indirect stake in Brussels Airport Company. PMV's acquisition confirms the attractiveness of Brussels Airport Company for a public investment company with a long-term vision. This transaction does not result in a change in direct shareholding and has no impact on the execution of the airport's strategy.

The Canadian pension fund Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) and the Flemish investment company PMV have concluded an agreement for the acquisition of OTPP's indirect interest in Brussels Airport Company. PMV acquires an economic stake of 39% in Brussels Airport.

This transaction does not result in a change in the direct shareholding of Brussels Airport Company and the execution of the strategy of the airport. PMV's decision to become a long-term shareholder fits within Flanders' vision of airports as critical infrastructure. For Ontario Teachers', this transfer marks the end of a successful chapter.

"I would like to sincerely thank OTPP for the good collaboration over the past 14 years, in which they have actively supported the further sustainable development of our airport. We were also able to count on their unconditional support during the various crises we have experienced. We are happy to welcome PMV as our new indirect shareholder. An investment company with a long-term vision such as PMV is a perfect fit for an infrastructure company like Brussels Airport and the role we play as the second most important economic driver in Flanders and Belgium," says Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport.

"We are delighted to have played a role in Brussels Airport's success and growth for over 14 years, as it has sought to drive passenger connectivity, develop as a cargo hub and continue its contribution to the Belgian economy. We would like to thank the management team and airport staff for their hard work and dedication over the past decade and a half, not least during the Covid-19 pandemic. In particular, we would like to acknowledge their exceptional commitment and bravery in responding to the tragic events in 2016, and for everything they have done to help Brussels Airport rebuild and recover. We are confident that the airport will continue its important role of connecting Belgium to the world and driving economic growth across the country and Europe. We would like to thank PMV for their collaboration and we look forward to seeing BRU continue to flourish in the future.", says Charles Thomazi, Senior Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure in EMEA at Ontario Teachers.

"We want to be in the cockpit when it comes to the future of our airport. If we don't decide, someone else will do it for us. This is a strategically sound and market-based investment that stands up to international comparison with similar acquisitions, such as the Danish government's purchase of shares in Copenhagen Airport. We are buying shares in a profitable and economically important infrastructure in Flanders. This gives us access to dividends and structural influence. It is therefore an investment that will pay for itself in the long term,", says Matthias Diependaele, Minister-President of Flanders.

The transaction is subject to the necessary regulatory clearances.

180 destinations, 7 new airlines and
6 new destinations for the summer season
at Brussels Airport

The aviation summer season is starting on 30 March. This summer, travellers from Brussels Airport can choose from 180 direct destinations, served by 68 airlines. The network also includes six new destinations, both European and intercontinental: Atlanta (United States), Curaçao, Bangkok (Thailand), Hong Kong (China), Montpellier and Bordeaux (France).

Sunny beaches, bustling metropolises, and charming cities... Beginning on 30 March, the offer from Brussels Airport will have something for everyone. This year, 68 airlines are serving as many as 180 direct destinations, including both European and intercontinental routes.

Six new direct destinations: ranging from the United States to Asia

Brussels Airport is expanding its network with six new destinations this summer. Travellers looking to explore distant destinations can already fly to Curaçao (TUI fly) and Bangkok (Thai Airways International) since this winter. France enthusiasts and city trip lovers can combine their passions with direct connections to Bordeaux (easyJet and Transavia) and Montpellier (Transavia). Direct flights to Atlanta with Delta Air Lines will be available from June, allowing passengers to connect to well-known cities in the southwest of the United States, and popular Florida destinations. Hong Kong is the final destination on the list of new routes offered by Cathay Pacific, starting from 4 August.

Seven new airlines

The launch of Thai Airways International last December and Cathay Pacific this summer completes the Asia network at Brussels Airport, which now includes seven nonstop destinations: Tokyo (Japan), Bangkok (Thailand), Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong (China), and Singapore. The new connections in Asia also provide one-stop holiday routes for travellers to destinations such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Australia, and New Zealand.

After flying to Tromsø last winter, Norwegian will start a direct route to Oslo, the Norwegian capital, from June. In addition, Air Albania (Tirana), Chalair (Brive), FlyOne Armenia (Yerevan), and Transavia (Bordeaux, Montpellier) are further strengthening Brussels Airport's network this summer.

Long-standing partners too are strengthening their network this summer season. Brussels Airlines now offers flights to 90 destinations, including the newly added Funchal (Madeira). Thanks to its 11th long-haul aircraft, the airline has more capacity than ever towards Sub-Saharan Africa with five additional weekly flights to Africa. This summer Brussels Airlines will have 50 aircraft in its fleet, including five of its own A320neos and four A220 aircraft thanks to a lease agreement with Air Baltic, which are up to 40% quieter than average medium-haul aircraft.

TUI will offer 66 direct connections this summer, adding Split (Croatia) to its network, while easyJet will launch two daily flights to Milan and Rome. The airline is also expanding its network with the new destination of Bordeaux. Finally, Vueling Airlines is launching flights to Florence (Firenze) and offering five destinations in Spain, one of the most popular countries during the summer season.

Solid international network

Brussels Airport continues to provide flight connections to an extensive international network, featuring 39 direct long-haul destinations this summer.

  • 7 destinations in North America (Atlanta, New York, Newark, Chicago, Washington, Montreal and Toronto)

  • 3 destinations in Central America: Cancun, Curaçao, and Punta Cana.

  • 18 destinations in sub-Saharan Africa

  • 4 destinations in the Gulf region (Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai and Jeddah)

  • 7 destinations in Asia (Tokyo, Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Singapore)

Thanks to its extensive European and international network, Brussels Airport is once again positioning itself as a gateway to the world in the heart of Europe this summer season. Together with its partners, the airport is preparing over the coming months to ensure safe and efficient operations this summer.

28,000 lost items at Brussels Airport in 2024

24% returned to owners, uncollected items donated to charities

In 2024, Brussels Airport welcomed 23.6 million passengers. With so many travellers passing through, it's no wonder that items occasionally go astray in the terminal. Last year alone, travellers left a total of 27,815 items in trays at security checkpoints or other areas of the airport. Approximately 24% of these items were reunited with their rightful owners. Much of the lost property that remains uncollected is donated to charitable organisations.

Every day, an average of 65,000 passengers travel through Brussels Airport, typically carrying plenty of baggage and belongings. However, from time to time, items are accidentally left behind at the airport. In cases involving checked baggage, passengers should contact their airline. All other misplaced items are registered by Brussels Airport's Lost & Found service. They strive to return the forgotten items to their owners.

28,000 items lost, 24% found

A total of 27,815 lost items were found in 2024, both at security checkpoints and other places at the airport. The items mostly include clothing, identity documents, jewellery, laptops, unchecked baggage and wallets. But smartphones, keys and toys also often go missing. In 2024, even larger items like prams, djembes, and a television set were left behind at the airport. Approximately 24% of lost items, or about a quarter, are eventually returned to their owners. These include laptops, identity documents, clothing, jewellery and wallets. 74% of objects returned to their owners within two weeks.

Around two-thirds of all lost items at the airport are recovered in the Connector, the area between the security checkpoints and the Piers. Brussels Airport actively promotes awareness in that area, encouraging travellers to check for forgotten items after security screening before they proceed with their journey.

Brussels Airport also urges passengers to always report their lost items via its website. Found items are kept at the airport for up to six months. Once the owner has been identified, they can come and collect the items themselves or have them sent to them. Identity cards, passports, and other official documents are transferred to the federal police after one month, after which they can no longer be retrieved.

Uncollected items donated to charities

One of Brussels Airport's strategic pillars is sustainability. Items that have been with the Lost & Found service for six months are often given a second life. For instance, the airport works with the Centre for General Welfare Centre (CAW) to donate abandoned clothing to those experiencing homelessness. Unclaimed electronic devices are donated to the non-profit organisation Close The Gap, which distributes used electronics to social, medical, and educational initiatives. In 2024, Brussels Airport donated a total of 193 mobile phones and 229 tablets to this non-profit organisation.

Opened food products are recycled for hygiene reasons. Packages that are large and unopened, as well as liquids like shampoo, deodorant, and drink containers that are not permitted through security, are given to local social welfare centres. In 2024, Brussels Airport donated a total of 26,200 kg of these products.

Remaining unclaimed items, such as belts and glasses, are processed and sold through an auction house.
