6 June, 1944. After nearly five years of war, this was it. The fight for the free world. The Allies flew thousands upon thousands of sorties on D-Day; heavy and medium bombers pummelled coastal defences, fighter-bombers kept the roads and railways clear of traffic and a terrific umbrella of fighter cover swept the skies free of Luftwaffe fighters. Elliott Marsh looks at the vital role played by the British and American air forces during the opening salvo of Operation OVERLORD, and the effect that this 'day of days' had on the men tasked with supporting the greatest invasion the world had ever seen.

D-Day 70 – Pt.19 – Operation OVERLORD: British Airborne Landings

by Elliott Marsh
At 2256 on 5 June 1944, six Halifax bombers climbed aloft from Tarrant Rushton, England, towing behind them six wooden Horsa gliders carrying troops from the D/2nd Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, an element of the 6th Airlanding Brigade, British 6th Airborne Division. The men within the fragile Horsas were part of the opening salvo of Operation OVERLORD, amongst the first troops to land behind enemy lines as the airborne phase of the invasion got underway in the fading Spring light. Elliott Marsh presents an overview of the British Airborne's contribution on D-Day.

by Elliott Marsh
As Operation OVERLORD drew near, the Allied air forces turned their attention to a brief but intense bombing campaign against the Normandy coastal gun batteries and radar sites which could pose a real and major threat to the seaborne forces on D-Day. Elliott Marsh summarises some of the final efforts to neutralise Germany's defensive forces in the days prior to 6 June 1944.

D-Day 70 – Pt.15 – Operation OVERLORD: The Transportation Plan

by Elliott Marsh
The Allies recognised a simple, undeniable fact when planning Operation OVERLORD: Rommel must not be able to muster inland reinforcements to crush the invasion forces at the Normandy beachhead. The very success of D-Day depended on it. So began perhaps the most important phase of the OVERLORD air plan; the sustained and devastating assault of railways and bridges in northern Europe. The German occupiers were about to feel the full effect of the Allies' "Transportation Plan". Elliott Marsh writes for GAR.

Video: D-Day "The Royal Air Force 1945/1947 Part 5/6 - The Air Plan" (including Typhoons & Mitchells)

The Transportation plan was a vital task performed by Allied air forces to disrupt the logistic of the German army before, during and after D-Day. This movie published after WW2 depicts the roles of the 2nd Tactical Air Force until the liberation of Brussels

Key to the success of the Normandy invasion was the allied reconnaissance in the months and years preceding the operation. The RAF and USAAF Photo Reconnaissance squadrons worked tirelessly on dangerous missions to gain the information required to establish the target for Operation OVERLORD. Huw Hopkins details their exploits.
