Is Uplace at Machelen a threat to aviation?

Controversial development plans for a shopping centre cum cinema complex at Machelen outside Brussels are meeting opposition from a new quarter. Belgium's aviation authorities have now warned that a planned tower could pose a danger to aviation.
The Flemish authorities have already issued a building permit for Uplace, but have failed to consult the aviation authorities the Federal Government now warns. After complaints from local retailers the development that includes a 90 metre high tower is now also causing worries in aviation circles. Belgium's Aviation Directorate General believes that the tower could pose a danger to aviation. If built the tower would probably necessitate a rerouting of flight routes to and from Brussels Airport.
Belgian Transport Secretary Melchior Wathelet (Francophone Christian democrat) has voiced the concerns in a letter to Flemish Planning Minister Philippe Muyters (nationalist), but he insists that the aviation authorities had sufficient time to look at the plans.
Uplace still requires an environmental licence.

SABCA levert belangrijke onderdelen voor nieuwe Vega raket

TVCNaast Italië en Frankrijk is België de derde grootste investeerder in het Europese Vega-programma. De ontwikkeling van deze nieuwe draagraket nam ongeveer zeven jaar in beslag en had een prijskaartje van meer dan 780 miljoen euro. België betaalde als ESA-lidstaat uiteindelijk 6,9% van de ontwikkelings- en testkosten. Volgens het Europese ruimtevaartagentschap ESA keert het geïnvesteerde geld vroeg of laat terug in de vorm van industriële contracten en vervolgcontracten. Het Belgisch beursgenoteerde lucht- en ruimtevaartbedrijf Société Anonyme Belge de Constructions Aéronautiques (SABCA) leverde de grootste Belgische bijdrage tot de nieuwe Europese Vega raket. Het bedrijf, dat in België drie vestigingen en ongeveer duizend werknemers heeft, leverde de onderste rand van de cylindervormige raketromp van de onderste Vega-rakettrap en ontwikkelde het Thrust Vectoring Control (TVC) systeem. Dit ingenieuze systeem bestaat per rakettrap uit twee zuigers die de straalpijp van de rakettrap enkele graden heen en weer kan bewegen. Bij het grote broertje van de Vega, de Ariane 5 raket, wordt een zelfde systeem hydraulisch aangedreven in plaats van elektromechanisch zoals bij de Vega. Het principe van het Thrust Vectoring Control systeem is gebaseerd op dat van een grote bout die men beweegt door aan de moer te draaien met een elektrische stappenmotor. Het systeem is van cruciaal belang aangezien deze de exacte baan van de raket bepalen. SABCA werkte ruim tien jaar aan het ontwerp van het TVC en het systeem is uniek in de ruimtevaart. In juni 2011 ondertekende SABCA een contract met de Italiaanse Vega-hoofdaannemer ELV voor de levering van onderdelen voor de eerste vijf Vega's. Het contract biedt binnen SABCA aan ongeveer zestig hoog opgeleide mensen werk.

On Friday 29 April, a small ceremony took place at ESA's European Research Institute ESRIN, at Frascati in Italy, to witness the signing of a contract to develop and qualify the thrust vector control subsystems for Europe's new small launcher Vega.

The contract, between the Belgian company SABCA and Vega Prime Contractor the Italian ELV SpA, was signed by Mr Pelichero, CEO of SABCA and Mr Scippa, CEO of Italian ELV. Also present were Mrs Wagner, Head of the Belgian Research and Space Applications Service and Mr Felici, Head of the Vega Department at ESA.
With the signing of this contract, SABCA, the company in charge of developing the inter-stage 0/1 structure for Vega's first stage, will also become responsible for the development and qualification of the thrust vector control (TVC). This is a critical subsystem for the Vega launcher as it ensures control of the launch vehicle during the propulsion phases. Each TVC subsystem consists of a battery set, two electro-mechanical actuators and a power distribution control unit.
This contract will also help to reinforce European know-how of developing electromechanical actuators and enhance expertise in the new technologies needed for this important launcher element.
The Vega Launch Vehicle Programme is managed by the ESA Integrated Project Team from ESRIN. Once Vega becomes operational in 2007 it will be able to place 300 to 2000 kg satellites economically into the polar and low-Earth orbits used for many scientific and Earth observation missions.

André Leleu Un ancien de la RAF vient de nous quitter Squadron 158 RAF

Un ancien de la RAF vient de nous quitter.
André LELEU s'est en allé rejoindre ses compagnons au paradis des aviateurs.
André LELEU est né le 15 septembre 1921 à Courtrai.
En février 1941, son frère Lucien et lui décident de Quitter la Belgique pour rejoindre l'Angleterre.
Après avoir traversé la France, l'Espagne et le Portugal ils arrivent à Gibraltar et embarquent, sous la protection de la Royal Navy, à bord d'un navire vers la Grande Bretagne.

The Hadley Page Halifax prototype first flew in October 1939 and started entering service in November 1940. The performance of the early Halifax models was not particularly impressive, but installation of more powerful Bristol Hercules engines in the Mark III improved performance greatly. The first RCAF squadron to fly the Halifax was Number 405 which began in April 1942. With a bomb load of 13,000 pounds it had a range of over 1,000 miles.

The Halifax along with the Avro Lancaster were the backbone of the RAF's Bomber Command, but it seldom received the acclaim that the Lancaster did.

In August 2011, the collection Philippe Veys was given to the Brussels Air Museum Funds to be preserved digitally and put at the disposal of the aviation researchers.
Philippe Veys collaborated with many newspapers before World War 2 and collected documents about aviation. The Belgian Aviation History Library was selected for her capability to convert great quantities of paper to digital archives permitting easy access and the diffusion of this collection, the result of many years of hard labour of an Aviation Enthusiast.
We are proud to publish these documents and share them with the aviation community.
