Voulu dès 1939 par Howard Hughes, le beau quadrimoteur à hélices Constellation fut d'abord affecté au transport de troupes. Il faut attendre 1945 pour que son exploitation commerciale commence, et que différentes versions soient construites. Le plus prestigieux, le Super G, décolle pour la première fois en décembre 1954, mais les vols sont encore réservés à une élite. Et être hôtesse à bord fait rêver les jeunes filles... Mais l'avènement du Jet met fin à la suprématie du Constellation

L'épopée des pilotes d'essais américains d'après-guerre, du passage du mur du son par Chuck Yeager aux premiers vols spatiaux habités. Ce film retrace la vie de ces aviateurs fougueux dans le contexte de la guerre froide naissante, et le parcours de certains d'entre eux, qui seront sélectionnés pour devenir les premiers américains à aller dans l'espace. Ce seront les astronautes du programme spatial Mercury, qui fut le premier pas de la conquête de l'espace américaine. 1984 : Le film a été récompensé par 4 Oscars sur 8 nominations : Meilleur montage, Meilleure prise de son, Meilleure musique originale, Meilleurs effets spéciaux sonores.

Le 6 juin 1944 est une date que nous connaissons tous. Or personne ne sait ce qui s'est passé le 19 août 1942. La raison de cet oubli tient pour beaucoup à l'échec de la tentative de débarquement à Dieppe et sur les plages alentours qui s'acheva en catastrophe. Cette opération exceptionnelle qui mobilisa près de 250 navires et 75 escadrilles fera plus de 3700 victimes parmi les troupes britanniques et canadiennes, morts, blessés, prisonniers, rien qu'en quelques heures

Wallonië organiseert voor de vierde maal Space Days

De overkoepelende vereniging Wallonie Espace organiseert op 26 en 27 september 2012 voor de vierde maal het Space Days evenement. Deze vierde editie vindt plaats in Luik en staat ditmaal helemaal in het teken van aardobservatie. Tijdens het Space Days evenement wil men zoveel mogelijk organisaties, bedrijven en universiteiten bij elkaar brengen die actief zijn op vlak van ruimtevaart en aardobservatie. Zo zullen tijdens dit tweedaags evenement verschillende gastsprekers, waaronder ESA General Director Jean-Jacques Dordain, Head of ESA GMES Space Office Earth Observation Directorate Josef Aschbacher en President & CEO van Thales Alenia Space Reynald Seznec, geïnteresseerden op de hoogte brengen van de laatste ontwikkelingen en plannen op vlak van aardobservatie. Tijdens de twee 'Industry Days' staat er ondermeer een uitstap op het programma naar enkele Waalse ruimtevaartbedrijven zoals AMOS, Spacebel en het Centre Spatial de Liège alsook een sociaal event waar enkele ESA en NASA ruimtevaarders zullen op aanwezig zijn. Ook zullen er workshops georganiseerd worden waarbij specialisten meer komen vertellen over instrumenten die gebruikt worden voor aardobservatie, data processing en ground applications. Het grote publiek kan naar aanleiding van de Space Days 2012 van 21 september tot en met 31 oktober 2012 ook terecht in het Médiacité Centre in Luik voor een tentoonstelling over aardobservatie. Met de tentoonstelling wil men het grote publiek en jongeren bewust maken van de belangrijke rol die de ruimtevaartindustrie en ruimtevaart-toepassingen vandaag de dag spelen in ons dagelijks leven.

The Wallonie Espace SPACE DAYS are meant as a biennial meeting place for all actors involved in the Space business : agencies, industry, universities, and governmental institutions. The 2012 theme is dedicated to Earth Observation, with emphasis on instrumentation, data processing and applications.

The next coming Space programme orientations in Europe (2012 ESA Ministerial Council, GMES…), new challenges related to climate changes, monitoring and management of natural disasters and Earth resources along with budget constraints require adequate technology solutions to be provided by the Space industry in collaboration with researchers and scientists.
