Armstrong's family, together with invited guests including the first moonwalker's fellow astronauts and the leadership of NASA, gathered at the Camargo Club in Cincinnati for a private memorial service on Friday morning.
The family's service was strictly invitation-only and closed to the press. The guest list was not released but among those in attendance were Armstrong's two Apollo 11 crew mates Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, as well as Apollo astronauts Bill Anders, Dick Gordon, Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan. Mercury astronaut and former Ohio Senator John Glenn also attended with his wife Annie.
Van 24 tot en met 28 september 2012 nodigt de Belgische astronaut en Burggraaf Dirk Frimout, als voorzitter van de Euro Space Society, de voltallige crew uit van de STS-45 Space Shuttle missie om in België deel te nemen aan conferenties en debatten in het kader van het 'Space Week 2012' evenement. Dirk Frimout maakte in 1992 deel uit van de STS-45 ruimtemissie en verbleef toen acht dagen in een baan om de Aarde aan boord van het Amerikaanse ruimteveer Atlantis. Om de twintigste verjaardag van de STS-45 missie te vieren, zakken alle crewleden af naar België waaronder de toenmalig gezagvoerder van de missie en de huidige NASA-directeur Charles Bolden. Het unieke Space Week 2012 evenement zal plaatsvinden in verschillende wetenschappelijke instituten en universiteiten zoals het Planetarium van de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht in Brussel, de Université Libre de Bruxelles, de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, de
