Le médecin bruxellois Maurice Duwez (1881–1966) avait déjà tâté de la plume avant guerre sous le pseudonyme de Max Deauville. Lors de l'offensive allemande de 1914, il a pris part, en tant que médecin de bataillon, à la retraite de l'armée belge, d'abord vers Anvers, puis vers le Westhoek. Il restera sur le front de l'Yser, en première ligne, jusqu'en novembre 1915, dans les secteurs de Dixmude, Lo et Lizerne.
Son récit a été publié dès 1917 chez l'éditeur parisien Calmann-Lévy.
Cette édition est enrichie d'une préface inédite de Norton Cru, d'un glossaire et de 70 clichés d'époque.
