Proba-1 fotografeert Olympische Spelen in Londen

De afgelopen weken stonden de Olympische Spelen in Londen wereldwijd in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Zelfs vanuit de ruimte werd dit gigantisch sportevenement en zijn bijhorende faciliteiten nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden. Zo slaagde de in België gebouwde microsatelliet Proba-1 er in om het Olympisch Stadium en de omgeving te fotograferen vanop een hoogte van 720 kilometer. De zwart-wit foto werd gemaakt met de High Resolution Camera (HRC) aan boord van Proba-1 dat opnamen maakt met een resolutie van tien meter bij een framegrootte van vijf kilometer. Op de opname zijn duidelijk het Olympisch Stadium, het London Aquatics Centre, het London Velopark, de Basketball Arena en het olympisch dorp te zien waar de atleten verbleven. De experimentele ESA-kunstmaan Proba-1 werd gebouwd door Verhaert Space uit Kruibeke (nu QinetiQ Space) en werd in oktober 2001 in de ruimte gebracht door middel van een Indiase PSLV draagraket. Door het succes van deze kleine satelliet werd Proba-1 een bijzondere 'fotograaf' in een baan om de Aarde die bekend staat om zijn unieke opnamen.

Amelia Earhart Discovery? Evidence of Downed Plane Discovered in the Pacific

Some 75 years after Amelia Earhart’s plane disappeared, a new discovery on the bottom of the ocean points to where the aviator may have crashed — and died. (via tighar.org)

A debris field videotaped in the waters off Nikumaroro Island could include remnants of the aviator’s plane — the latest batch of evidence in what has been an ongoing search for clues (see the most notable Earhart discoveries from the last 75 years). According to the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), “a review of high-definition underwater video footage taken during the recently completed Niku VII expedition has revealed a scattering of man-made objects on the reef slope off the west end of Nikumaroro.”

Spearheaded by TIGHAR, the expedition began July 12 and used an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to scan for data and record hours of video footage

American Airlines stopt verbinding Brussel-New York

De Amerikaanse luchtvaartmaatschappij American Airlines stopt begin november zijn verbinding tussen Brussels Airport en JFK Airport in New York. De luchtvaartmaatschappij zet daarmee al zijn activiteiten in België stop. Op dit ogenblik telt de Amerikaanse luchtvaartmaatschappij nog 28 medewerkers op de luchthaven. Daarnaast werken ook nog vijf mensen bij de verkoopsafdeling in Brussel. De maatschappij zegt de beslissing genomen te hebben in het licht van het opdrijven van de performantie en de vooruitzichten en trends op de markt. In vakbondskringen wordt een mogelijk verband gelegd met de grote concurrentie voor vluchten naar de Verenigde Staten op Brussels Airport, dat transatlantische vluchten van alle Noord-Amerikaanse maatschappijen ontvangt. American Airlines vloog sinds het eind van de jaren tachtig dagelijks tussen Zaventem en New York. Vorig jaar schrapte de maatschappij al de dagelijkse vluchten tussen Chicago en Brussel. (MH)

New Belgium flights from Bristol (U.K.)

Passengers flying from Bristol Airport to Brussels will board a new, improved aircraft from the end of October following an agreement between Brussels Airlines and Flybe. 

The Belgian airline’s three-times daily service to Europe’s ‘capital’ is operated by Flybe under a ‘wet-lease’ contract which will see a Bombardier Q400 introduced on the route.  
The new aircraft has capacity for 78 passengers – a 60 per cent increase in seats compared to the Embraer 145 currently operating the service.  It will bear the Brussels Airlines livery and offer the same product and services enjoyed across the Brussels Airlines short haul network, meaning passengers from Bristol will enjoy a seamless product when using the flight to access onward connections.

As one of the quietest and most technologically advanced turboprop aircraft on the market, the Q400 will also deliver environmental improvements.  It produces 30-40 per cent less emissions on routes where it has replaced similar capacity, older jets.
The Brussels Airlines service operates three times a day, with convenient connections from Brussels to 21 destinations in Africa, 50 European cities and a new daily flight to New York JFK.  Flight times include an early morning departure (06:20) making it possible to do a day’s business before returning at 16:20 or 20:50.  The winter schedule also includes a Saturday flight.

Voulu dès 1939 par Howard Hughes, le beau quadrimoteur à hélices Constellation fut d'abord affecté au transport de troupes. Il faut attendre 1945 pour que son exploitation commerciale commence, et que différentes versions soient construites. Le plus prestigieux, le Super G, décolle pour la première fois en décembre 1954, mais les vols sont encore réservés à une élite. Et être hôtesse à bord fait rêver les jeunes filles... Mais l'avènement du Jet met fin à la suprématie du Constellation
