Bonjour Yves,

Dimanche dernier, le 26 juin 2013, c'était déjà le 5° ANNIVERSAIRE de l'inauguration du "Mémorial Robert Mercer" qui eut lieu le 22 mai 2008. Une courte cérémonie eut lieu au mémorial, érigé face à l'église de Kain - paroisse de Kain-La-Tombe (Tournai), moments empreints de la continuation si importante du "Relais de la Mémoire" : Lucas - 7 ans - "ancien" écolier de l'école voisine, évitée par "Bob" Mercer - déposa, comme depuis deux ans, une petite corbeille de fleurs artificielles qui ont, pendant un an, le ... devoir de garnir le mémorial. Je rappelle que Robert Mercer, après avoir fait sauter en parachute ses huit compagnons d'équipage au dessus de Warchin et les toits enneigés de Tournai, atterris sains et saufs sauf Charles Taylor, tué au sol, resta volontairement à bord, l'aile gauche du B-17G complètement en feu et évita ainsi, dans les dernières secondes de sa vie, le quartier du Viaduc à Tournai et les alentours de l'église de Kain-La-Tombe. Une véritable "boucherie" venait d'être évitée.
Du 21 juin au 24 juin prochain, j'aurai le plaisir et l'honneur d'être à Horham, Suffolk, ancienne base de départ du 95th Bomb. Group pour les cérémonie du 70° anniversaire de l'arrivée des premiers bombardiers - 1943.

La Patrouille de France qui fête les 25 et 26 mai, sur la BA701, son 60ème anniversaire , a introduit une nouvelle figure : quatre Alphajet tracent un 60 face au public.

Les oracles prédisaient le pire sur la Provence pour le meeting du 60ème anniversaire de la Patrouille de France… Pluie froides et mistral voulaient s'inviter à la fête successivement… Manifestement les prévisionnistes météo revoient leur copie peu à peu, les cartes bien ternes qui plantaient ce décor font place à des images plus optimistes. Aux dernières nouvelles, le soleil sera bien là et, si le matin du Dimanche l'anémomètre affichera 30 km/h de mistral avec quelques rafales à 50 km/h, il semble que l'après midi s'annonce plus serein pour que les présentations puissent se dérouler sans avoir à souffrir d'un risque météo.

La jeune patrouille acrobatique de l'armée belge, les "Red Devils" (diables rouges) s'est frottée samedi et dimanche aux grandes équipes de démonstration européennes à l'occasion du 60e anniversaire de l'une des plus prestigieuses d'entre elles, la Patrouille de France (PAF).

The one who loses himself in his passion has lost less than whoever loses his passion … There will always be a dogfight ! I'm waiting to be told how cobras, hooks, or vectored thrust help in combat. They're great at air shows, but zero energy is a fighter pilot's nightmare. Academics will never instill the spirit … There are pilots and there are pilots… With the good ones, it is inborn. You can't teach it. If you are a fighter pilot, you have to be willing to take risks.

MEMORIES

Did LOCKHEED-MARTIN inherited GENERAL DYNAMIC's problem ? Is the RAPTOR an aborted success story ? The GENERAL DYNAMICS B58 Hustler, the F111 were too far ahead of their time … That has often be the case for the GD projects. Even the F16 project was considered as a fancy of the mind by the Chief Executive of General Dynamics: Dave Lewis. Without John Boyd commitment to Harry Hillaker's (the developper), the project would have been cancelled. Randy Kent, a former GD engineer who launched the F16XL in 1979 (35% superior to the existing F16) has been involved in the RAPTOR development. Is it contagion ?
