Addition to the Collection Philippe Veys

In August 2011, the collection Philippe Veys was given to the Brussels Air Museum Funds to be preserved digitally and put at the disposal of the aviation researchers.

Philippe Veys collaborated with many newspapers before World War 2 and collected documents about aviation. The Belgian Aviation History Library was selected for her capability to convert great quantities of paper to digital archives permitting easy access and the diffusion of this collection, the result of many years of hard labour of an Aviation Enthusiast.

We are proud to publish these documents and share them with the aviation community.

Deze week was Minister voor Wetenschapsbeleid Paul Magnette aanwezig in Napels op de Ministerraad van de Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie ESA. Zo maakte Paul Magnette op deze Ministerraad bekend dat België de komende vijf jaar (2013 - 2018) 1,018 miljard euro zal investeren in de ruimtevaartsector.

De Belgische bijdrage wordt in de periode van 2013 tot 2018 met jaarlijks 5 miljoen euro verhoogd (5 x 5 miljoen euro: 25 miljoen euro). Deze verhoging heeft Paul Magnette toch kunnen verkrijgen tijdens het recente begrotingsconclaaf waarin de financiële crisis de rode draad was. Hierbij bevestigd België zijn progressieve groei die haar 'ruimtevaartenveloppe' kent sinds 2008. België maakt op deze manier haar belang in de ruimtevaartsector duidelijk waarin vandaag de dag zo'n 2 000 directe, hoogopgeleide en niet-verplaatsbare, mensen werkzaam zijn. De steeds groter wordende 'ruimtevaartenveloppe' is dan ook zeer goed nieuws voor de 41 bedrijven, 9 universiteiten, Federale wetenschappelijke instellingen en onderzoekscentra die in de ruimtevaart actief zijn. De OESO heeft berekent dat elke euro, die door de Belgische regering in de ruimtevaart wordt geïnvesteerd, tussen de 1,4 en 4,9 euro directe en indirecte voordelen oplevert. Door de verhoogde bijdrage van België aan de Europese ruimtevaart bevestigd België ook zijn positie als zesde nettobetaler aan de ESA. Volgens Paul Magnette moet de 25 miljoen euro extra voor de ruimtevaart op termijn zorgen voor bijkomende banen voor hoger opgeleiden en bijkomende economische voordelen die zo'n 100 miljoen euro kunnen opleveren.
Op de Ministerraad heeft België ook ingestemd met het Duits-Frans compromis over de toekomstige opvolger van de Europese Ariane 5 draagraket. Het compromis, dat sterk gesteund werd door Duitsland, bevat een overgangsfase met een verbeterde en meer krachtige versie van de bestaande Ariane 5 die de naam 'Ariane 5 ME' zal krijgen. Deze opgewaardeerde Ariane 5 zou in 2017 voor het eerst moeten gelanceerd worden. De opvolger van de Ariane 5, de Ariane 6 zou in 2021 of 2022 voor het eerst de ruimte in kunnen. Met het ESA-budget dat tijdens deze Ministerraad werd goedgekeurd, zal men de Ariane 5 ME financieren alsook de voorbereiding van de Ariane 6.

Als alles verloopt volgens plan vertrekt op 19 december 2012 de Canadese astronaut Chris Hadfield naar het ISS ruimtestation.

Het wordt voor Chris Hadfield de derde ruimtevlucht, samen met de Rus Romanenko en de Amerikaan Marshburn.

Chris Hadfield leerde net als zijn broer Dave vliegen met de SV-4B V16 van zijn vader Roger Hadfield, en vliegt er nog steeds mee als hij de kans heeft.

1200th F-16 rolls out SABCA's Flight Line

Last month the SABCA flight line crew successfully delivered an F16 aircraft to one of its customer Air Forces : this time the Belgian Air Component received back a single-seater F-16, freshly upgraded by the highly skilled technicians of the company to the latest M5 Avionics standards. "Business as usual" for these people who already proceeded with 29 similar deliveries since the beginning of the year... with the noticeable difference that this aircraft was exactly the 1200th F-16 to roll out SABCA's flight Line since 26 January 1979, when the very first production F-16 was delivered to the Belgian Air Force. SABCA started its common history with the F-16 more than 30 years ago, by the assembly and in-flight delivery of 222 new F-16 aircraft, on behalf of three different end-users. Since then, the SABCA Charleroi plant became a global key-player for the Depot-level maintenance and upgrade of F-16 aircraft, serving nine different F-16 customers around the world. Beside the continuous support to Belgium's and other European’s F-16 fleets, SABCA ensures the Depot-Level MRO of the USAF F-16 operated in the European theatre. The choice made last year by the US Government to extend for another 5 years its co-operation with SABCA demonstrates SABCA's abilities to provide accurate, on-time, competitive answers to the most demanding requirements.
