Event : annual general meeting of the Belgian Air Force Association

Last Friday March 22th, the annual general meeting of the Belgian Air Force Association took place at the Royal Army Museum.

The membership has grown  from less than 100 members to 750 members in a little bit more than one year.

Another amazing result was to see young people interested in the objectives of the association and present at the meeting.

"Wings", the magazine of the BAFA also met with success and 4 issues should be published in 2013.

As the president said "the BAFA is not the exclusive club of old airmen of the Belgian Air Force, but the place to be for anyone supporting the Air Force and interested in het past, present and future".

Un auditorium Frank De Winne à l'Ecole royale militaire pour honorer l'un de ses élèves

(Belga) L'Ecole royale militaire (ERM) a baptisé dimanche son grand auditorium du nom de l'un de ses plus célèbres anciens élèves, le spationaute, général de brigade et vicomte Frank De Winne.

Le commandant de l'ERM, le général-major Harry Vindevogel, et Frank De Winne, ont dévoilé une plaque donnant le nom de l'ancien commandant de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS), en marge de l'"Open Campus Day" organisée par l'"université de la Défense" à Bruxelles, a constaté l'agence BELGA.

Als bestuurslid van Pasar Kampenhout (het vroegere Vakantiegenoegens) heb ik op donderdag 25 april een bezoek aan de luchtmachtbasis van Kleiene Brogel georganizeerd onder de naam: Een kijkje in het nest van de Fighting Falcons. Dit bezoek wordt door een nederlandstalige gids begeleid.

Graag zou ik dit bezoek willen kenbaar maken aan een groot publiek van luchtvaartenthousiasten. Vandaar mijn vraag of dit kan opgenomen worden in Belgian Aviation News?

Bien sûr que nous connaissions l'histoire, mais pas dans le détail. L'organisation du ravitaillement en vol avec les onze Victor est bluffante. Excellent film de 47mn et anglais facile. I wonder how many of you knew the story. I certainly had not heard about it. It took place at the opening of the Falklands war, as a task force sailed towards the Falklands to regain control after the Argentinean invasion and occupation. In order to minimize the air threat to the task force, it was necessary to make the airstrip on the island unusable. The RAF brass proposed an audacious plan -- to send a Vulcan bomber down to drop ordinary bombs on it, rather than the nuclear variety they were originally designed to deliver. It makes a gripping story, and a great watch, Enjoy. Be warned this YouTube video runs for 47 minuets http://www.youtube.com/embed/40knj0qg_Us?feature=player_ It was the first and last active service mission for Vulcans -- they were due to be scrapped and were, 6 months later.

Space : Belg begint op 15 april aan gesimuleerde ruimtemissie

De Belg Angelo Vermeulen begint op 15 april 2013 aan een vier maanden durende simulatie van een ruimtemissie. Het project werd opgezet door de universiteiten van Cornell en Hawaii en wordt gefinancierd door de Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie NASA. Hoofddoel van deze simulatie is onderzoeken hoe voedselmoeheid bij ruimtevaarders kan vermeden worden.

Samen met vijf andere bemanningsleden, waaronder vier Amerikanen en één Canadees, zal Angelo Vermeulen vier maanden lang leven in een levensechte ruimtebasis op Hawaii. Op het vulkanische eiland in de Stille Oceaan zullen de bemanningsleden van het Hawaii Space Exploration Analogue & Simulation project (HI SEAS) leven en werken als ruimtevaarders en hierbij de mogelijkheden aftasten van koken tijdens een langdurige ruimtemissie. Zo zal men er eetpatronen ontwikkelen voor ruimtevaarders dat door wetenschappers strikt zal worden opgevolgd. Eén van de grootste problemen die opduiken tijdens langdurige ruimtemissies is voedselmoeheid. Bereide maaltijden is iedereen na een tijd beu en daar wil men nu met het HI SEAS project iets aan doen. De 41-jarige bioloog en kunstenaar uit Sint-Niklaas stelde zich in februari 2012 kandidaat voor deze gesimuleerde ruimtemissie op Hawaii en werd vervolgens geselecteerd uit meer dan 700 inschrijvingen. Enkele maanden later werd Vermeulen ook aangeduid als gezagvoerder van de missie. Aan de TU Delft in Nederland werkt Angelo Vermeulen ook aan een kunst- en technologiedoctoraat, waarin hij nieuwe concepten voor ruimteschepen onderzoekt.
