Wings of Memory : Berging van de lancaster DX-P in Lierde

Tijdens de eerste winternacht (21 december) van 1942 vlogen de bommenwerpers van Bomber Command richting Munchen. Omstreeks 23u30 ving de Freya-radar langs de kust de eerste berichten op van de aankomende formatie. Vanop St.-Truiden werden 5 toestellen op goed geluk ingezet. Ook vanop Laon-Athies startten de Messerschmitts van de 1.NJG 4 de motoren en verspreidden zich doorheen het Vlaamse luchtruim. Eén van de indringers was de Lancaster met rompcode DX-P,een toestel van het 57 Squadron, die nacht opgestegen in Scampton (Engeland). Iets na 23u30 werd de Avro lancaster MK l DX-P for peter, met serienummer W4234 neergeschoten boven Steenhuize (Belgie-Oost-Vlaanderen) door Hauptmann Wilhelm Herget in een Messersschmitt 110 van het 1.NJG 4.Het toestel stortte wat verder neer op de Lierdese wijk Kakebeke.Met uitzondering vande Nieuw-Zeelandse staartschutter Sgt P.B.Pickford, die gewond gevangen werd genomen en de rest van de oorlog zou doorbrengen in Stalag 344 te Lamsdorf, kwam de ganse bemanning om het leven. TSR-2 simply got the first three right."— Sir Sydney Camm. The British Aircraft Corporation TSR-2 was a cancelled Cold War strike and reconnaissance aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) for the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The TSR-2 was designed to penetrate a well-defended forward battle area at low altitudes and very high speeds, and then attack high-value targets in the rear with nuclear or conventional weapons. Another aspect of its combat role was to provide high-altitude, high-speed photo reconnaissance, requirements that necessitated incorporating "state-of-the-art" aviation technology that would make it the highest-performing aircraft in these roles. Only one airframe flew and test flights and weight rise during design indicated that the aircraft would be unable to meet its original stringent design specifications.
