Book : La guerre vue du ciel 1914-1918 Le Front en Belgique

Very expensive, but definitively a book you need to have if you are interested with World War 1 on the Belgian front.

One of the author working at the "In the Flanders Fields" Museum. The other one is an archeologist from the Gent University. They added their expertises to deliver an incredible work to identify the places portrayed from the sky. They added maps to give information about then and now. Some pictures are translated on tracing papers.


The result is fascinating and of great quality.

However, something is missing. Two major military museums are associated to this project but the airmen who permitted the development of aerial photography as well as the techniques they invented are not described in this book. Except for a very few pictures, the personal history of the photographer is not mentioned. The role of such important observers as Desclée or D'Hendecourt are omitted. Their roles, the risks they took should have needed a few words. Today where drones are everywhere, explaining the roles of the observers is for sure an added value for the reader.

One of the most successfull Belgian team of observers. Adj "Gusto" de Mevius and Capt Roger d'Hendecourt of n° 4 Squadron in their Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter in 1917. They had such a reputation, they were detached from the Belgian army to help both French and British armies operating on the Belgian front at the express request of Allied armies. A professional officer, Roger le Dergent d'Hendecourt did not hesitate to buy at his own cost the photographic hardware he needed to obtain high quality pictures. Hangar Flying is de Engelse uitdrukking voor het keuvelen over luchtvaart. We willen op een aangename en eigenzinnige manier artikels brengen over de Belgische burgerlijke en militaire vliegerij. Wordt deze nieuwbrief niet correct weergegeven? Lees in een browser Nieuwsbrief 78 - Maart 2014   Vrienden van de luchtvaart, onze sponsors: naar analogie van drie succesvolle Vlaamse Havendagen is er op 8 maart een eerste Luchtvaartdag georganiseerd. Maar liefst 30.000 geïnteresseerden bezochten een van de 140 activiteiten verspreid over tientallen locaties. Het aanbod viel duidelijk in de smaak. Niet alleen op de grote luchthavens waren er veel belangstellenden, ook op de kleinere vliegvelden was er bijzonder veel activiteit. In Hoevenen bijvoorbeeld, vlogen de toestellen af en aan, zat het terras de hele middag vol met bezoekers, en kregen ze het bezoek van een vijftigtal –voornamelijk Waalse– ULM's. De luchtvaart vervult een motorfunctie binnen de Vlaamse economie en het was tijd om de luchthavens en de luchtvaartsector een grotere bekendheid te geven. Alle luchtvaartpartners zijn bijzonder opgetogen met de grote opkomst. Vlaams minister van mobiliteit en openbare werken Hilde Crevits en minister-president Kris Peeters waren natuurlijk verheugd om op het einde van de Luchtvaartdag officieel het succesvolle resultaat bekend te kunnen maken. -Op Heli-Expo 2014 in Anaheim (California) heeft Noordzee Helicopters Vlaanderen (NHV) zes extra Airbus Helicopters EC175 besteld, wat het totale orderboek van NHV voor dit type nu op zestien brengt. NHV is een launch customer voor de EC175. In 2012 werd al een bestelling van tien toestellen geplaatst voor de EC175. NHV CEO Eric Van Hal blaakt van vertrouwen in de capaciteiten van de EC175 en in Airbus Helicopters, het vroegere Eurocopter. Nog dit jaar wordt aan NHV de eerste EC175 geleverd.  -De eerste van drie B757’s van Air Contractors, de Ierse luchtvaartmaatschappij van de ASL Aviation Group, begon op maandag 10 februari 2014 vluchten uit te voeren voor Aer Lingus op de route Shannon-Boston. Twee andere B757’s gaan vliegen tussen Shannon-New York en Dublin-Toronto. Aan boord zit een cockpitbemanning van Air Contractors en een cabin crew van Aer Lingus. Voor ASL Aviation vliegen wereldwijd zo’n 90 toestellen. ASL Aviation Group is gebaseerd in Ierland, meerderheidsaandeelhouder is de Belgische Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB.)  Het is opvallend op welke manier een land als Ierland, met amper de helft van het aantal inwoners van België, zich altijd geprofileerd heeft in de luchtvaartsector, denk maar aan Ryanair en aan de diverse luchtvaart-financieringsgroepen. Over ASL schreef Guy Viselé al eerder een artikel.  -Hangar Flying is een vzw. Op de algemene vergadering van februari 2014 hebben zowel Jan Vanhulle als Paul Van Caesbroeck om persoonlijke redenen hun ontslag aangekondigd. Beiden worden welgemeend bedankt voor hun jarenlange inzet. Paul was al van bij de start betrokken bij zowel www.hangarflying.be als www.aviationheritage.eu en het is ongetwijfeld dankzij hem dat we al jaren ononderbroken een vertrouwde plek gevonden hebben op het internet. Ons vaste redactieteam wordt niet uitgebreid, dat is een bewuste keuze van de algemene vergadering. We stellen hangarflying.be wel open voor vrijwilligers die eigen deugdelijke artikels willen gepubliceerd zien op internet. Franstalige of Nederlandstalige teksten over de Belgische luchtvaart zijn uitermate welkom bij een van de redactieleden. -Hangar Flying en de daaraan verbonden webstek over het luchtvaartpatrimonium zorgt niet voor papieren publicaties, maar vraagt van de auteurs, occasionele medewerkers en sponsors nochtans een even grote inzet. Informatie van het web plukken is dikwijls gemakkelijker dan eigen onderzoek verrichten. Uit respect voor het werk van al onze medewerkers vragen we uitdrukkelijk om het auteursrecht te respecteren. We zijn er blij mee dat onze informatie ruim wordt verspreid maar op zijn minst durven we een correcte bronvermelding vragen. Hangar Flying Deze maand op Hangarflying.be Boek De Rode Jurk Gastauteur Guido Bouckaert waagde zich aan het schrijven van een novelle, met succes. Frans liet een pak luchtvaartliteratuur wachten en waagde zich aan De rode Jurk. ARTICLE Ryanair s’installe à Brussels Airport Hangar Flying heeft natuurlijk de start van de Ryanair-operaties vanop Brussels Airport nauwgezet opgevolgd. Twee redacteurs stuurden we mee met Ryanair-vluchten. Was Guy tevreden van de service naar Lissabon? IMPRESSION A Pandastic Journey Tussen een massa genodigden stonden ook Guy en Kevin de DHL Boeing 767-300F op te wachten die twee pandas naar het dierenpark Pairi Daiza (www.pairidaiza.eu) bracht. ARTIKEL Luchtvaartdag bezoeken in vlucht Tom volgde voor Hangar Flying de eerste Luchtvaartdag. Hij vloog mee vanaf Wevelgem naar Antwerpen en Oostende.  ARTIKEL The Ryan has Landed! Kevin maakte een reservatie op de eerste Ryanair-vlucht van Brussels Airport naar Barcelona. Et si Bruxelles choisissait le F/A-18E/F Super Hornet de Boeing pour remplacer ses F-16 ? "Nous avons entamé les discussions avec le ministère (belge) de la Défense", a affirmé le vice-président exécutif de Boeing chargé du développement international, Jeff Kohler, au lendemain d'un entretien avec des membres du cabinet du ministre de la défense Pieter De Crem.

The P-61 Black Widow in June 2103. According to MAAM’s director, Russ Strine, the aircraft looks much the same externally today as the museum is working on the outer wings and systems.

Most of our readers will be aware of the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum’s Herculean efforts to restore Northrop P-61B Black Widow 42-39445 back to flying condition. The museum and its volunteers have been working on this project since their epic 1991 recovery of the Black Widow from its crash site atop Mt. Cyclops, Indonesia, where it had lain since January, 1945.  It’s a complex beast indeed, and the original, overly-optimistic 3 year restoration plan has stretched somewhat. But today, the aircraft is roughly 70% complete. The fuselage, tail booms, and wing center section stand upon their own undercarriage and the outer wing panels are the last major hurdle in completing the structural restoration work.

Geoff Jones recently visited the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre at RAF Museum Cosford on behalf of Warbirds News. We were particularly interested to hear about progress on their Handley Page Hampden TB Mk.I restoration project. Only three partial airframes of the 1430 Hampdens built are known to exist, with the RAF Museum’s example, P1344, being the most complete. Staff and volunteers at Cosford are currently lavishing their attention on P1344, and have made significant progress over the last few years.
