[AELR] News of the C119 project
De AELR is
actief op de site van het Jubelpark van het " War Heritage Institute
" (afgekort WHI), en meer bepaald in de Luchtvaarthall, waar het deelneemt
aan de restauratie van oude vliegtuigen en aan het beheer van archieven met
betrekking tot de luchtvaart.
Bij de
tentoongestelde vliegtuigen bevindt zich een Fairchild C-119, die door de
Belgische Luchtmacht werd gebruikt van 1952 tot 1973 voor het vervoer van
troepen en uitrusting en voor humanitaire opdrachten. Een van de twee exemplaren die nog in
België zijn, wordt bewaard in de Luchtvaarthall van het Jubelparkmuseum. Dit
vliegtuig is wel bekend bij veel Belgen: zij die in Kongo in 1960 werden
geëvacueerd, de parachutisten die er gebruik van hebben gemaakt tijdens hun
militaire dienst of bij hun loopbaan in het leger, en de televisiekijkers die
de reportages over de humanitaire zendingen hebben bekeken.
Het interieur van de C-119 is momenteel gesloten voor
het publiek om redenen van veiligheid en bescherming. In de tijd toen de
laadruimte toegankelijk was, was het bezoek zeer populair bij zowel volwassenen
als kinderen. Het project van onze vereniging, dat de steun heeft van de
autoriteiten van het WHI, bestaat uit het installeren van een beschermde glazen
bezoekerscorridor, evenals een ruimte met foto's, mannequins en voorwerpen die
herinneren aan de zendingen die met de C-119 zijn uitgevoerd. Dit is onze manier om hulde te brengen aan de piloten en de
parachutisten die in dit mythische vliegtuig hebben gevlogen.
De fondsen die
nodig zijn voor de inrichting van de glazen tunnel werden vorig jaar ingezameld
dank zij donaties en de bijdrage van de AELR uit eigen middelen en van het WHI.
De glazen tunnel werd
eind 2018 besteld, maar het was noodzakelijk om het vliegtuig te stabiliseren
vooraleer hij geïnstalleerd kon worden.
Dankzij de samenwerking tussen Sabena Aerospace, de
15de Wing en het team van het War Heritage Institute werd de C-119 op 2 juli
gestabiliseerd op stutten. De 15de Wing leende de benodigde krikken om het
vliegtuig op te tillen en nam deel aan de implementatie ervan, terwijl de
ervaring van het team van Sabena Aerospace het mogelijk maakte om de nodige
middelen in te zetten. Deze operatie was essentieel omdat de veroudering van de
banden deze operatie noodzakelijk maakte. Nu kan de glazen tunnel in het
vliegtuig worden geplaatst en heropend voor het publiek in een veilige
omgeving.... Naar verwachting zal de tunnel eind augustus
worden geïnstalleerd.
L'AELR est active sur le site du Cinquantenaire du « War Heritage
Institute » (en abrégé : WHI), et plus précisément dans le Hall de
l’Air, où elle participe à la restauration d’avions anciens et à la gestion
d’archives ayant trait à l’aviation.
Parmi les appareils exposés figure un Fairchild C-119, utilisé par la Force
Aérienne belge de 1952 à 1973 pour le transport de troupes et de matériel et
pour des missions humanitaires. Un des deux exemplaires subsistant en Belgique
est conservé dans le Hall de l'Air au Musée du Cinquantenaire. Cet avion est
bien connu de nombreux belges: ceux qui ont évacué le Congo en 1960, les
parachutistes qui l'ont utilisé pendant leur service militaire ou leur
engagement à l'armée, et les téléspectateurs qui ont regardé des reportages sur
les missions humanitaires.
L'intérieur du C-119 est actuellement fermé au public pour des
raisons de sécurité et de préservation. A l'époque où la soute était
accessible, les visites connaissaient un grand succès, tant chez les adultes
que chez les enfants. Le projet de notre association, qui a le soutien des
Autorités du WHI, consiste à y aménager un couloir de visite protégé, ainsi
qu'un espace exposant des photos, mannequins et objets rappelant les missions
effectuées avec le C-119. C’est notre manière de rendre hommage aux aviateurs
et aux parachutistes qui ont volé à bord de cet avion mythique.
Les fonds nécessaires à l'aménagement du tunnel vitré ont pu être réunis
l'an dernier grâce aux dons et à l'apport de l'AELR sur ses fonds propres et du
WHI. Le tunnel vitré a été commandé fin 2018, mais il convenait avant son
installation de stabiliser l'avion.
Le 2 juillet, grâce à la collaboration entre Sabena Aerospace, le 15ème
Wing, et l'équipe du War Heritage Institute, le C-119 a été stabilisé sur
des chandelles. Le 15ème Wing a prêté les jacks indispensables au soulèvement
de l'avion, et participé à leur mise en oeuvre, tandis que l'expertise de
l'équipe de Sabena Aerospace a permis de réaliser la mise en oeuvre des moyens
nécessaires. Cette opération était indispensable vu la vétusté des pneus, avant
le placement d'un tunnel vitré dans l'avion et sa réouverture au public dans un
environnement sécurisé.. Le tunnel devrait être installé à la fin du mois
d'août.
AELR is active on the site of the War Heritage Institute (in short: WHI) in the Jubilee park in Brussels ,
and more specifically in the Air Hall, where it participates in the restoration
of old aircraft and the management of aviation archives.
Among the aircraft on display is a Fairchild C-119, used by the Belgian Air
Force from 1952 to 1973 for the transport of troops and equipment and for
humanitarian missions. One of the two surviving copies in Belgium is kept in
the Air Hall at the Royal Army Museum. This aircraft is well known to many
Belgians: those who evacuated Congo in 1960, the paratroopers who used it
during their military service or their engagement in the army, and the viewers
who watched reports on humanitarian missions.
The interior of the C-119 is currently closed to the public for safety and
preservation reasons. At the time when the cargo hold was accessible, visits

up a protected visitation corridor, as well as a space displaying photos,
mannequins and objects reminiscent of the missions carried out with the C-119.
It is our way of paying tribute to the airmen and paratroopers who flew aboard
this mythical aircraft.
The funds needed to develop the glass tunnel were raised last year thanks
to donations and the contribution of the AELR from its own funds and the WHI.
The glass tunnel was ordered at the end of 2018.
On July 2, thanks to the collaboration between Sabena Aerospace, the 15th
Wing, and the War Heritage Institute team, the C-119 was stabilized on jacks.
The 15th Wing lent the jacks essential to the lifting of the aircraft, and
participated in their implementation, while the expertise of the Sabena
Aerospace team made it possible to carry out the necessary means. This
operation was essential given the dilapidated tires, before the placement of a
glass tunnel in the aircraft and its reopening to the public in a safe
environment. The tunnel is expected to be installed at the end of August.

Bonjour Yves,
Pourrais-tu diffuser le fait que le shop du Musée s'étoffe au point de vue modélisme, suite à la disparition du 16è Escadron. Nous venons de rentrer les maquettes « belges » suivantes: Renard R31, SVA bis, Hunter et Fouga « Last of the many ».
Si la demande existe, j'envisage de rentrer plus de matériel (peintures, pinceaux, etc.) mais je souhaiterais avoir un peu de répondant car l'investissement est conséquent et je ne peux pas me permettre de le faire « à perte ». Si tes lecteurs sont intéressés, merci de me contacter.
