Space : Belgen ontdekken op Antarctica meteoriet van 18 kilogram

Een team van Belgische wetenschappers, dat werkzaam was op de Prinses Elisabeth-basis op Antarctica, heeft een meteoriet ontdekt van achttien kilogram. De kosmische rotsblok bevond zich in de ijskap van de Zuidpool en is het grootste ontdekte restant van een meteoriet dat sinds 1988 in de regio werd gevonden.
De spectaculaire vondst werd gedaan door vijf onderzoekers van de Franstalige en Nederlandstalige vrije universiteiten van Brussel. De Belgische onderzoekers zijn ondertussen terug van hun expeditie dat deel uitmaakte van het Samba-project. Dit project is de Belgische bijdrage tot het verzamelingsproject van Antarctische meteorieten dat onder leiding staat van de Verenigde Staten en Japan. Alles samen vond het team tijdens hun veertig dagen durende expeditie maar liefst 425 meteorieten met een totaal gewicht van 75 kilogram. Daarbij zaten ook nog meteorieten van zes en vier kilogram. De plaats waar de meteorieten werden ontdekt, bevindt zich op 2 900 meter hoogte, 140 kilometer ten zuiden van de Belgische poolbasis. De grootste meteoriet werd uiteindelijk op 28 januari ontdekt in het Nansen Ice Field en behoort tot het type 'chondriet'. Chondrieten zijn silicaat-rijk en bevatten geen sporen van smelten of differentiatie. Dit type meteoriet werd gevormd in de beginperiode van het Zonnestelsel en zijn de meest gevonden meteorieten op Aarde. Volgens de onderzoekers is de ontdekking van een dergelijke grote meteoriet zeer uitzonderlijk. De grootste meteoriet die ooit op Antarctica werd gevonden, had een gewicht van 407 kilogram. Momenteel bevindt de achttien kilogram zware meteoriet zich in Japan waar het aan een speciaal ontdooiingsproces wordt onderworpen zodat er geen water in de steen zal trekken. Nadat de steenklomp uitvoerig werd onderzocht, zal deze naar België worden gebracht

Elle en a d'ailleurs racheté le nom et le logo, et recruté une partie de ses anciens cadres.

Le 23 Juin 1956 était un samedi. Il faisait beau sur l'île de Sylt, au nord de l'Allemagne.
La 4ème Escadrille participait à une période de tir Air/Air du 04 au 28 Juin 1956 sur la grande base ex-Luftwaffe occupée par la RAF depuis 1945. (*)
(*) Depuis 1954, un accord a été passé entre la Force Aérienne Belge et les autorités Britanniques pour que nos escadrilles de chasse puissent s'entrainer aux exercices de tir aériens dans un secteur se trouvant au large de l'île de Sylt, au départ de la "Royal Air Force Station - Sylt", non loin de la ville de Westerland.

Jetairfly to Start Tour Operations with the Embraer E190
Jetairfly, the Belgian subsidiary of TUI Travel PLC (“TUI Travel”), one
of the world’s leading leisure travel groups, has received the first of
two EMBRAER 190 leased from BOC Aviation, the Singapore-based aircraft
leasing company. The aircraft was delivered during a ceremony at
Embraer’s headquarters in São José dos Campos, Brazil. The second E190
is due to follow during the first semester of 2013.
Jetairfly’s
E190s are configured with 112 slim line seats in a single-class layout.
The company plans to operate the aircraft from Brussels airport to
various destinations in its European network including Faro in Portugal,
Málaga in Spain, and Zakynthos in Greece.
“Not only are we
welcoming a new customer to our portfolio of E-Jet operators, the
airline’s selection is yet another endorsement of the versatility of the
E-Jets product line”, said Paulo Cesar Silva, President and CEO,
Embraer Commercial Aviation. “Jetairfly will deploy its E190s to offer
its passengers more nonstop options more often and to more
destinations.”
The delivery to Jetairfly broadens the range of
business applications of E-Jets. The 70- to 120- seat, four-aircraft
family is flying today with low fare airlines, in regional networks,
with full-service mainline carriers and now with tour operators, like
TUI Travel.
“We are very enthusiastic about welcoming this first
EMBRAER 190 in Jetairfly’s fleet and start operations with this brand
new aircraft. It will allow us to schedule new direct routes with one of
the most eco-efficient aircraft, providing our passengers with a high
level of comfort,” stated Elie Bruyninckx, Chairman of Jetairfly. “The
E190 will help us to right size demand on some seasonal routes and lower
our operational costs.”
“The introduction of this first E190 to
Jetairfly’s fleet further consolidates our company’s partnership with
TUI Travel PLC and also with Embraer. We are delighted to be the first
aircraft leasing company to deliver the E190 to a tour operator and we
are able to do it because the economics of the aircraft works for this
business,” said Robert Martin, Managing Director and Chief Executive
Officer of BOC Aviation.
Since entering revenue service in 2004,
Embraer has received more than 1,000 E-Jet orders. There are over 60
customers from 40 countries who are operating E-Jets. More than 900
