A legendary Lockheed L-1049F Super Constellation, HB-RSC, visited Airport Bern-Belp in Switzerland. Engine start-up with flames and smoke. Flame out while turning on the runway. Close-up take off and great engine sound.

The "Super Connie" is still considered the most beautiful aircraft ever built. The elegant dolphin-shaped fuselage and the triple tail design are a feast for the eyes. The distinctive sound of the four powerful 18-cylinder radial engines (Wright R-3350) make the heart of any plane enthusiast beat faster. The screechy brakes might put a smile on the faces of many people.

Enjoy the close-up view of the spectacular Super Constellation; a great piece of aviation history or in other words a flying legend! The Swiss watch manufacturer BREITLING is the main sponsor of this classic airliner.

ESTEC verwelkomd eerste Belgische 'national trainees'

Binnenkort worden drie jonge Belgische ingenieurs, die elk 24 jaar oud zijn, verwelkomd in het ESTEC technologiecentrum van de Europese ruimtevaartorganisatie ESA. De drie ingenieurs zullen er beginnen aan een stage in ruimtevaartwetenschap en –technologie binnen een team van ESA. Zij zijn de eerste 'national trainees' van een nieuw opleidingsprogramma.

De drie jonge ingenieurs werden op maandag 21 oktober 2013 voorgesteld op een persconferentie in Brussel in aanwezigheid van Staatssecretaris voor Wetenschapsbeleid Philippe Courard en de Belgische ESA-astronaut Frank De Winne. De Staatssecretaris wenste de Belgische trainees Romain Gérard, Robin Nelen et Johan Vennekens een "bloeiende stage, vol technologische en wetenschappelijke ervaring en multiculturele ontmoetingen" toe. Tijdens hun voorstelling tekenden de drie ingenieurs samen met de Staatssecretaris en Frank De Winne een charter waarbij de jonge Belgen zich in de toekomst gaan engageren om wetenschappelijke en technologische studies en loopbanen in de ruimtevaartsector te promoten. De drie jongeren zijn de eerste 'national trainees' uit het Belgische National Trainee Programme. Dit programma is het gevolg van een overeenkomst tussen het Federaal Wetenschapsbeleid (Belspo) en ESA. Met dit opleidingsprogramma wil men jonge Belgische afgestudeerden – zowel ingenieurs als onderzoekers – de mogelijkheid geven een stage te lopen bij een operationele afdeling van ESA. Het programma krijgt ook de komende jaren een vervolg.

BMI Regional stopt met verbinding Antwerpen-Manchester

De Britse luchtvaartmaatschappij BMI Regional stopt eind november met zijn vluchten tussen de steden Antwerpen en Manchester. De beslissing van de maatschappij zou onder meer te maken hebben met de start van de werken aan de ondertunneling van de landingsbaan op Antwerp Airport, waardoor BMI Regional voor de verbinding tussen Antwerpen en Manchester een ander toestel zou dienen in te zetten. De directie van Antwerp Airport zegt de situatie met BMI Regional te bestuderen en op zoek te zullen gaan naar mogelijke alternatieven. Daarbij zou ook overleg worden gepleegd met Egis, de toekomstige exploitant van de Antwerpse luchthaven. BMI Regional had de verbinding tussen Antwerpen en Manchester in oktober vorig jaar opgestart, nadat CityJet de service om organisatorische redenen had stopgezet. 	10 ! Last October 14th, the 10th aircraft joined the BAPA in Gembloux. This is a magnificent Austria Glider offered to us by Willy Marrot thanks to the help of Bob. After the arrival of the machine, she was quickly cleaned by the enthusiastic team. This is not the only news at our workshop. Eric put on display USAAF pilot equipment near the P-38 display. Our future visitors will have so the possibility to learn about flight gears. Laurent continue to work on his front undercarriage but now he can simulate retraction and extension of the device. This is the first time in many years of active restoration we make an aeronautical device back in functional state. Unusually, we restored parts for static display only. This achievement was completed in just 3 months. Yves and Thierry started to work on the front fuselage. Taking advantage of their long experience, they first concentrate on the documentation. Thierry setup a professional logbook of all the operations performed on the airframe. They started to work on the airframe but any task if first carefully planned to cope with the manuals. Eric also dismantled damaged parts on the central section of the wings to secure future operations and study what need to be done for repairs. It was a long and painstaking task. Thanks to the results of the inauguration party (Thanks again Alex) . We started to buy the missing equipment for our restorations. A dummy for Eric USAAF flight gear and others first necessity tools were purchased hunting the internet to find the best cost effective solutions. We are still looking for some missing tools, if ever you can help please find the list of what we search at http://www.bapa.be/how-to-help-us All together we cumulated much more than 100 years of experience. In this long time, we succeed in avoiding accidents during our restoration activities. Safety is for us mandatory and critical. Aviation and specially the Belgian Air Force has a very long tradition of promoting safety by the use of posters. We will use vintage safety poster at the workshop as a reminder of good practices and put a copy of these posters at http://www.bapa.be/safety On the archiving from, we restarted to publish the already scanned documents of the Veys collection. More than 140 documents are now available at http://www.bapa.be/our-projects/07-collection-michel-veys Our collection of digital aircraft manuals is now of 808 items (https://sites.google.com/site/bapabe2/our-projects/archives) . Robert provided to us some extra cabinets very helpful to store the documents we collected or we received. André Dillien offered to us his Belgian registration files.
