	Cold but on the frontline ! November and December was cold but busy. Laurent started to paint the parts of the front undercarriage he already lovely restored. To preserve and protect the parts he restored, Laurent put not less that 3 layers of primer and 3 layers of paint. Fortunately all the paint reference are included in the maintenance manuals we have. Although it was time consuming to find exactly the same colour, he succeed in doing it. He also restored the identification plates applied on the different parts. As mentioned last month, he build a support to test retraction of the undercarriage, see a demonstration in video. Vincent painted the wings of the Flying flea, he is working on. The compressor is not yet in place but using a mobile unit, he can achieve good results (although he hate the yellow colour). On the B-25 front fuselage, both Yves started to work in the bombardier compartment. Any remains of glass mastic used to fix the Plexiglas are removed and we also repaired small scratches. We discovered very few corrosion zones. Most of the damaged parts can be easily repaired by manufacturing new ones. Once the cleanup will be done, Thierry will do a checkup for corrosion and we will share our findings to be sure nothing is forgotten. He already repaired a small bump. We also searched to understand how the floor was fixed. We discovered two different models were used but the good news is these parts can be made from scratch and we do not need to buy expensive specific parts. Eric is finishing to remove carefully to the damaged parts on the central section. It took him a lot of time avoiding to further damage these parts. Some nuts were very resistant and needed hours to be removed. We had the visit of the third Yves and the RSAB organized a meeting in Gembloux. More than 30 visitors had the occasion to share with us their experiences and their broad knowledge. Robert fabricated a box to store the blades of the focke achgelis of Didier. We received from Marc Vanderelst  a splendid picture of the B-25 Mitchell of the 180 squadron. The father of Marc flow with this unit. Thierry is working on a workshop security checklist. Winter is almost there, so we plan to buy sweat-shirt and overall to protect ourself against the rigors of the Belgian weather. If you are interested. 	10 ! Last October 14th, the 10th aircraft joined the BAPA in Gembloux. This is a magnificent Austria Glider offered to us by Willy Marrot thanks to the help of Bob. After the arrival of the machine, she was quickly cleaned by the enthusiastic  team. This is not the only news at our workshop. Eric put on display  USAAF pilot equipment near the P-38 display. Our future visitors will have so the possibility to learn about flight gears. Laurent continue to work on his front undercarriage but now he can simulate retraction and extension of the device. This is the first time in many years of active restoration  we make an aeronautical device back in functional state. Unusually, we restored parts for static display only. This achievement was completed in just 3 months. Yves and Thierry started to work on the front fuselage. Taking advantage of their long experience, they first concentrate on the documentation. Thierry setup a professional logbook of all the operations performed on the airframe. They started to work on the airframe but any task if first carefully planned to cope with the manuals. Eric also dismantled damaged parts on the central section of the wings to secure future operations and study what need to be done for repairs. It was a long and painstaking task. Thanks to the results of the inauguration party (Thanks again Alex) . We started to buy the missing equipment for our restorations.  A dummy for Eric USAAF flight gear and others first necessity tools were purchased hunting the internet to find the best cost effective solutions. We are still looking for some missing tools, if ever you can help please find the list of what we search at http://www.bapa.be/how-to-help-us    All together we cumulated much more than 100 years  of experience. In this long time, we succeed in avoiding accidents during our restoration activities.  Safety is for us mandatory and critical. Aviation and specially the Belgian Air Force has a very long tradition of promoting safety by the use of posters.  We will use vintage safety poster at the workshop as a reminder of good practices and put a copy of these posters at http://www.bapa.be/safety   On  the archiving from, we restarted to publish the already scanned documents of the Veys collection. More than 140 documents are now available at http://www.bapa.be/our-projects/07-collection-michel-veys   Our collection of digital aircraft manuals is now of 808 items (https://sites.google.com/site/bapabe2/our-projects/archives) . Robert provided to us some extra cabinets very helpful to store the documents we collected or we received. André Dillien offered to us his Belgian registration files. Nieuwsbrief 72 - "Is de sluiting vliegveld Saint-Hubert onafwendbaar?"

Hangar Flying is de Engelse uitdrukking voor het keuvelen over luchtvaart. We willen op een aangename en eigenzinnige manier artikels brengen over de Belgische burgerlijke en militaire vliegerij. Wordt deze nieuwbrief niet correct weergegeven? Lees in een browser Nieuwsbrief 72 - September 2013 Vrienden van de luchtvaart, onze sponsors: - In een vorige editie van Hangar Flying vroegen we aan onze buitenlandse lezers om eens contact op te nemen. We kregen ondermeer een reactie van Jean Claude Dispaux. Die verliet België in 1965 en verbleef achtereenvolgens in de USA, Frankrijk, Duitsland, UK en vond sinds 1990 een vaste stek in Zwitserland. In al de landen waar hij verbleef heeft hij ook gevlogen, met zweefvliegtuigen en/of motorvliegtuigen. Enkele vluchten van hem staan op zijn (nog niet volledig afgewerkte) site www.dispaux.net.  - Op zaterdag 5 en zondag 6 oktober (van 10 tot 18 uur) gaan op het vliegveld van Wevelgem de luchtvaartdagen door. Ik citeer de organisatie: "Op deze Luchtvaartdagen kunnen de bezoekers op een directe manier het bestaan en de werking van de luchthaven ontdekken, alsook de belangrijke impact ervan op het recreatief, sociaal en economisch leven in de regio". Je kan er kennis maken met ruim twintig deelnemende bedrijven.  - Onlangs opende Gent haar nieuwe, peperdure Arteveldestadion. Op 17 juli speelde thuisploeg KAA Gent haar eerste wedstrijd op de nieuwe grasmat van het innovatieve 'ecostadion'. Aan het oude Ottenstadion bevindt zich een monument voor gesneuvelden van de Eerste Wereldoorlog (database). We durven hopen dat projectontwikkelaar Ghelamco het monument een nieuwe eervolle plaats zullen bezorgen.    - Minder fraai nieuws komt er uit Wallonië. In de mei-editie van Hangar Flying maakten we al melding dat de aerodroom van Saint-Hubert met sluiting bedreigd werd. De beheersraad van Idelux (die een meerderheidsbelang heeft in het vliegveld) kondigde op 30 augustus haar beslissing aan om zich terug te trekken uit de aerodroom. Een chronisch tekort aan fondsen dat schommelde tussen de 200.000 en de 300.000 euro en een procedure voor de Raad van State vertraagden immers het voorgestelde project om de zone voor economische activiteiten uit te breiden. Het Belgian Helicopter Open Championship zal het laatste evenement van dit seizoen geweest zijn. Indien er in de komende maanden geen overnemer gevonden wordt, zal een definitieve sluiting werkelijkheid worden en verliest België een van haar fraaiste luchtsportlocaties. - Een dag later, op 1 september, werden door de regering de benoemingen aangekondigd van de nieuwe CEO's van de Belgische overheidsbedrijven. Johan Decuyper, vroeger kabinetchef van voormalig Staatssecretaris voor Mobiliteit Schouppe, werd aangewezen als gedelegeerd bestuurder van Belgocontrol. Hij volgt er Jean-Claude Tintin op, die Belgocontrol leidde sinds haar oprichting in oktober 1998. Voor Brussels Airport draagt de regering Marc Descheemaecker voor als kandidaat-voorzitter. Zijn mandaat als gedelegeerd bestuurder bij de NMBS werd immers niet verlengd. De Raad van Bestuur moet deze benoeming wel nog bekrachtigen, een beslissing wordt echter in de zeer nabije toekomst verwacht. Het is betreurenswaardig dat de regering erg lang gewacht heeft om de knoop door te hakken en dat de aanstellingen binnen de overheidsbedrijven in hoge mate politiek gekleurd zijn. Ook over het saga van de herstructurering  van de spoorwegen is de nodige tijd gegaan. De tijdelijke benoemingen in het hogere management van Belgocontrol liepen af in november 2010 en sindsdien werkte het bedrijf bijna drie jaar zonder politieke beslissingen over de structurele financiële problemen die nochtans duidelijk geïdentificeerd waren door het vorige bestuur. De toekomst zal uitwijzen of de nieuwe leiding een oplossing kan vinden voor deze problemen en welke houding ze zal aannemen in het delicate dossier van de Single European Sky. Frans verzamelde een twintigtal foto's in een impressie.  Impressie Spitfire geborgen in Tillemgebos Op 31 augustus werd in Sint-Michiels Brugge een Spitfire Mk. IX geborgen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog verloren ging. In een fotoreportage laat Tom ons zien wat zo'n berging allemaal met zich meebrengt. Artikel Avernas-le-Bauduin beleeft historische dagen Het dertigjarige bestaan van de Aéroclub de Hesbaye werd gevierd met een "Historic Days"-fly-in op het ULM-terrein van Avernas-le-Bauduin. In zijn uitgebreid artikel maakt Manu ons wegwijs in de wondere wereld van de ultralichte luchtvaart. impression Centenaire de l'aviation militaire Jean-Pierre was op 6 september te gast op Bevekom waar 100 jaar militaire luchtvaart in België gevierd werd met de joint power demo 'Excercise Centennial'. Article La BAPA déploie ses ailes Eind vorig jaar werd de BAPA (Belgian Aviation Preservation Association) opgericht en deze maand nam Jean-Pierre een kijkje in het atelier in Gembloux. Hij licht ook een tipje van de sluier op van hun groot project: het restaureren van een B-25 Mitchell bommenwerper. ARTIKEL Joseph Christiaens, vliegenier en autocoureur Frans deed research over het leven van Joseph Christiaens (brevet nummer 7!) Over deze Belgische luchtvaartpionier is bijzonder weinig gepubliceerd. Als piloot was hij vooral actief in 1910 en 1911 en hij was o.a. de eerste om een gemotoriseerde vlucht uit te voeren in Singapore. impressie Eeuwfeest voor de Belgische militaire luchtvaart Ook Tom was die dag aanwezig in Bevekom en maakte eveneens als Jean-Pierre een knappe selectie beelden voor Hangar Flying. Article Le « Dakota », la mémoire des soixante-cinq ans du 15ème Wing De 15e Wing viert dit jaar haar 65e verjaardag met een open door te Melsbroek op 21 en 22 september. Guy schetst voor ons een korte geschiedenis van de eenheid en was te gast bij Dakota, het documentatiecentrum van de 15e Wing in Kwartier "Groenveld".
