3.7% more passengers and 2% fewer flights at Brussels Airport in January

During the month of January, more than 1.7 million passengers passed through Brussels Airport, an increase of 3.7% compared to January 2019. Freight transport decreased by 10.5% compared to the same month last year. The number of flights fell by 2%.

Dit toestel is een voorloper van de zeer populair geworden DH.82A Tiger Moth. Een Gipsy Moth is (zeker buiten Engeland) een zeldzaamheid. Vandaar dat we deze kist eens onder het vergrootglas leggen. LASCO Deze dubbeldekker heeft inmiddels veel van de wereld gezien. In 1928 zag deze Gipsy Moth het levenslicht in Australië. Daar werd het in licentie gebouwd bij LASCO in Melbourne. LASCO staat voor Larkin Aircraft Supply Company. Dit was een bedrijf van Herbert Joseph Larkin. Hij was een ACE-vlieger uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog met elf overwinningen op zijn naam. Terug in Australië startte hij een onderneming voor het (in licentie) bouwen van vliegtuigen. Zo bouwde hij in 1925 de Avro 540K en vervolgens een 32-tal De Havilland DH.60G Gipsy Moth dubbeldekkers. Tot die serie behoort het toestel van de Vroege Vogels ook. N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth heeft een mooie koperen Venturi-tube om de gyroscoop aan te drijven Constructienummer Over het constructienummer van dit exemplaar heerst onduidelijkheid. Bronnen geven aan dat dit 27 zou zijn. Dat zou evenwel strijdig zijn met het gegeven dat de door LASCO gebouwde toestellen begonnen bij constructienummer 168, Veelal wordt het constructienummer aangeduid als A7/44, zijn voormalige militaire registratie. Dat is zeker niet correct. N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth Op een tweetal plaatjes in de cockpit is het een en ander over het toestel terug te lezen. Daar noteert men ook het constructienummer A7/44 en wordt als bouwjaar 21/10/1930 gegeven. Dat is de datum waarop de kist in dienst werd genomen. In het Amerikaanse register staat het toestel met bouwjaar 1928 ingeschreven. Logisch redenerend is het wel typisch dat als de kist in 1928 gebouwd is, dat het dan vreemd is dat het pas in 1930 in gebruik wordt genomen. Wie het weet mag het zeggen! De identificatieplaatjes achter in de cockpit Loopbaan Dit toestel is op 21 oktober 1930 afgeleverd aan de Royal Australien Air Force met de militaire registratie A7/44. Tot 31 maart 1941 heeft deze De Havilland bij diverse eenheden in Australië gevlogen. Op genoemde datum kwam de kist in opslag te staan in Canbarra. Daarna kreeg het toestel een paar jaar rust. N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth Gratis Op 27 juni 1945 verhuisde deze Gipsy Moth kosteloos naar de Royal Queensland Aero Club. Het kreeg toen de Australische civiele registratie VH-AFN. In die tijd had de kist een richtingsroer met grote dikke strepen. Die zijn in de loop der tijd verdwenen. In 1968 werd de VH-AFN overgeschreven naar het Amerikaanse register. Sindsdien gaat dit toestel als N168G door het leven. Op deze foto uit 2014 staat nog geen naam op de neus van het toestel Begin jaren '80 is de N168G naar Nederland gekomen en kwam op 21 januari 1981 op naam van J. van Mesdag te staan. Op de neus van de kist staat tegenwoordig aan de rechterkant 'J. Mes' met daaronder 'Jaap van Mesdag'. Dit is een hommage aan de grondlegger van de Stichting Vroege Vogels, de overleden Jaap van Mesdag (1922 – 2015). N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth met 'J. Mes" en 'Jaap van Mesdag' op de neus Restauratie Tussen 1980 en 1982 is het toestel volledig gerestaureerd door de vrijwilligers van Vroege Vogels. Op 11 augustus 1995 raakte de N168G beschadigd bij een noodlanding als gevolg van een motorstoring bij Zeewolde. De Gipsy Moth is op dit moment niet luchtwaardig. Het heeft al een tijd niet meer gevlogen. De laatste tijd stond het op een liftje opgeslagen boven de overige toestellen in de museumhangaar van de Vroege Vogels. N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth op zijn liftje in 2018 Sinds eind 2019 is het toestel weer naar beneden gehaald. Om ruimte te besparen zijn de vleugels van de kist opgeklapt. Een vernuftige constructie die men bij deze kist indertijd heeft toegepast zodat stalling efficiënt kon plaatsvinden. Door een vernuftige constructie kunnen de vleugels gevouwen worden Uiterlijk In de loop der jaren is het uiterlijk van de N168G een beetje gewijzigd. In de eerste jaren stond de oude Australische registratie VH-AFN nog op de romp. Het Amerikaanse kenmerk stond/staat verticaal in de staart. N168G De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth met VH-AFN op de romp (Lelystad, 1985) Een paar jaar later is de "V" verwijderd en stond er alleen nog 'H-AFN' op de romp. In die vorm zagen we de kist bijvoorbeeld tijdens een Fly-in op Keiheuvel (B) in 1993. In 1993 stond op de romp H-AFN (Keiheuvel, 1993) Tegenwoordig is het Australische kenmerk helemaal verdwenen. Alleen de registratie N168G staat nu in de staart. Jammer, die Australische regi op de romp maakte de kist toch wat exotischer. Nu staat alleen N168G op de staart van de De Havilland DH-60G Gipsy Moth Het logo op de romp van de Gipsy Moth is de laatste jaren best wel van kleur verschoten. In 2005 zat er nog wel wat kleur op, maar anno nu zijn de kleuren aardig vervaagd. Het logo op de N168G in 2005 Het logo op de N168G in 2019 Trustee De N168G staat tegenwoordig op naam van de Eastern Stearman Inc. Trustee uit Leesburg (Virginia, VS). Deze onderneming verzorgt voor over de honderd (veelal historische) vliegtuigen de inschrijving in het Amerikaanse register. Een trustee (belangenbehartiger) maakt het mogelijk om buiten de Verenigde Staten een Amerikaans geregistreerd vliegtuig in eigendom te hebben. Bij deze specifieke trustee zijn meerdere toestellen van Vroege Vogels ondergebracht zoals de Vultee, de Stampe, de Aeronca en de Jungmann. Maar ook bijvoorbeeld andere historische Nederlandse vliegtuigen als de Fokker F27-400M N27FF van de stichting Vliegend Nederlands Cultureel Erfgoed, die naar Lelystad Airport komt, zijn hier ondergebracht.
