( 1915 - 2012 ) ( collection André Bar ) Chers amis et passionnés de l'aviation, Le vendredi 1er juin 2012, en consultant ma boîte de messagerie, je suis tombé sur un message envoyé par André Bar. Voici le contenu : Bonjour mi p'ti. Et encore un qui s'en va!!!!!! La suite du message contient l'annonce du décès, envoyée par Les " Vieilles Tiges " de l'Aviation belge, suivie du faire - part. Ce dernier est la version publiée dans le journal " Le Soir ", le lundi 4 juin : Notre ami et membre Daniel COLIN ( 77e Prom. B.A.F., 1939 ) est décédé ce 31 mai ; il avait 97 ans. Les funérailles auront lieu le jeudi 7 juin à 11h00. Onze vriend en lid Daniel COLIN ( 77e Prom. B.A.F., 1939 ) is op 31 mei overleden. Hij was 97. Zijn begrafenisdienst heeft plaats op donderdag 7 juni 11u00. Réunion/bijeenkomst : Église St - Henri, Parvis St - Henri 18, 1200 Woluwé - St - Lambert. .. Le service religieux aura lieu en l'église Saint - Henri le jeudi 7 juin 2012 à 11 heures. La famille recevra les condoléances à 10 heures 30 ( 18 parvis Saint - Henri à 1200 Bruxelles ). L'inhumation au cimetière se fera dans l'intimité familiale. Le présent avis tient lieu de faire - part. 1160 Bruxelles, clos Albert Crommelynck, 43 ( bte 3.1 ) 8300 Knokke, Parmentierlaan, 225 ( bte 41 ) Je ne connaissais pas Daniel Colin. Ses nom et prénom se trouvaient sur la liste des " Vieilles Tiges ", offerte par Henri Branders, mais j'ignorais qu'il avait volé en opérations au sein de la South African Air Force ( S.A.A.F. ). Engagé dans la S.A.A.F., Daniel Colin débute son entraînement en Afrique du Sud, sur bimoteur. Il le poursuit et le termine au Kenya, au sein de la 72 O.T.U. ( Operational Training Unit ) de la R.A.F. à Nanuyki. Au mois de février 1943, il est affecté au 12 S.A.A.F. Squadron ( Tripolitaine, Lybie ), grâce à la présence de Gérard Greindl D.F.C., pilote belge au sein de ce même Squadron. Sur place, Daniel Colin vole sur Douglas A - 20 Havoc, un bombardier bimoteur de fabrication américaine ( appelé Boston par les forces britanniques et du Commonwealth ). Le 26 février 1943, il accompli sa première mission opérationnelle : un raid nocturne sur la ligne Mareth. Les raids se succèdent, ainsi que les déplacements, puisque le Squadron se retrouve à Médénine en Tunisie ( 5 avril 1943 ). Après la victoire en Afrique du Nord, le Squadron débute de nouveaux raids avec la campagne de Sicile. Le 21 juillet, Daniel Colin quitte la Tunisie pour opérer à partir de Malte. La Sicile étant conquise, la campagne d'Italie peut commencer. Un nouveau déménagement voit le Squadron fouler le sol sicilien, à Gerbini. Avec 54 raids à son actif, Daniel Colin rejoint la base de Foggia en Italie ( 21 octobre 1943 ). Suite à des informations transmises par quatre officiers aviateurs yougoslaves, le 12 Squadron délaisse momentanément le front italien. Servant sous la férule des Allemands, ils avaient profité d'un déplacement en avion pour se rendrent aux Alliés. Le 1er novembre, le Squadron décolle pour aller bombarder des navires dans le port de Split ( Yougoslavie ). Daniel Colin effectue son 73ème et dernier raid, le 3 décembre 1943. Il rentre avec un trou d'obus dans son aile gauche. Retiré des opérations, Daniel Colin est envoyé en congé en Égypte, au Caire. Après la guerre, il s'engage dans la R.A.F. P.S. : Merci beaucoup à André Bar pour m'avoir transmis l'information et une copie des " NOTES DE GUERRE " de Daniel Colin.

Book Thunderbolts of the Hell Hawks - 365th Fighter-Bomber Group in Words, Pictures and Illustrations - Softbound

We announced some months ago the publication of this book about the P-47 group once based in Chièvres and very active above Belgium.


Some of our friends helped the author.

Save. I have been warned of the output of your book about the 365th FG.

I immediately bough it.

I'm Head of Board and Chairman of Chièvres Air Base International Museum (MIBAC –
www.mibac.be) In 1944, Chièvres was A-84 US AFB.

We are therefore very involded in the history of that airfield. Knowing that a new book deals with a
little bit of it a great pleasure for all of us.
I therefore read the book (not already completely), my first impression is : what a beautiful book !
Especially the illustrations and aircrafts profiles.
It is a whole page of history that scrolls under my eyes.

I have not yet read the whole, as I said, my English is a bit perfectible (I do the practice more 40
years), but I already must confess I love this book.

Thank you for this marvelous Edition. Thanks for the memory of all those who came from their
home town, liberated us and, alas, died in this small part of Belgium.

We will never forget; our Museum is the example of duty of remembrance.

Vrienden van de luchtvaart, -in onze nieuwsbrief van 15 mei 2012 hadden we het over de indrukwekkende +1.000-km zweefvlucht van Tijl Schmelzer (16 april 2012) met de gracieuze Ventus 2cxT D-KTBY. Drie weken later maakten Jo Schoeters (Balen) en Manu Kimpe (Bocholt) een driehoeksvlucht met start en landing op Keiheuvel van meer dan 1.000 km. Met hun Nimbus 3DT vertrokken ze zondag 13 mei om 9.30 uur voor een eerste vlucht van 275 km naar Porta Westfalica bij Hanover. Nadien ging het naar Kronach Kreuzberg (275 km), tussen Erfurt en Nuremberg, en vandaar vertrokken ze voor de 450 km terugvlucht naar Keiheuvel. De totale vluchtduur bedroeg 11 uur aan een gemiddelde snelheid van 93 km/h. Het is de eerste keer dat er een FAI-driehoeksvlucht van 1.000 km FAI vanuit Vlaanderen met succes kon afgerond worden. -We hebben hier in België best enkele creatieve kunstenaars die hun inspiratie vinden in de luchtvaart, denk maar aan Jaak De Koninck, alias Jack Learoy van ‘Starbrook Airlines’ (www.starbrook-airlines.com) of aan Kurt Basslé (http://users.telenet.be/sv-4b/Engels/Kurt1.html). Jean-Pierre Philippe en Michel Chapelle zijn twee piloten die in het charmante Waals-Brabantse Lasne zijn gestart met de Astrartes Art Gallery (www.astrartes.com). Van 8 juni tot 2 september 2012 loopt in de galerij een tentoonstelling met werken van Pierre-André ‘Tich’ Haegeman. Deze kunstenaar startte zijn vliegcarrière bij de Belgische Luchtmacht (116 Promotie, oktober 1949 tot oktober 1954) en ging daarna vliegen voor Sabena. Op zaterdag 9 juni, een dag na de vernissage, gingen we in de galerij rustig zijn werken bewonderen.  De doeken van de ‘Peintre de l'Air’ konden ons zeker bekoren. Boven Belgische landschappen schildert hij zowel een B747 als een Tiger Moth,  een C-130 of een frêle oldtimer. De ballonvaart is alom tegenwoordig in zijn werk, meestal luchtballons getooid met de Belgische driekleur. De luchtvaarttuigen die hij schildert overvliegen het Waals-Brabantse landschap op lage hoogte. Samen met Haegeman stellen ook twee andere niet-luchtvaartkunstenaars hun werken tentoon, nl. Chavi en Julien Dupas. -Een hele eer viel te beurt aan Wings Of Memory. Op 22 mei 2012 werd een delegatie ontvangen door Commander Patterson van het 309th Airlift Squadron van Chièvres.  Patterson nam er officieel een onderdeel van de P-47 42-28460 van John Read van de 365th Fighter Group (een hydraulic unit accumulator) in ontvangst. Het 365 Sqn zal er zorg voor dragen dat dit artefact wordt overgemaakt aan het Tennessee Museum of Aviation. Op 13 september 1944 maakte de P-47 Thunderbolt een buiklanding in Wanne (provincie Luik). Aan de stuurknuppel zat piloot John R. Read.  Meer info op www.wingsofmemory.be/Ned/P47.html -Koning Albert II heeft op donderdag 7 juni om 11.50 uur het nieuwe Diabolo-spoorcomplex officieel geopend in aanwezigheid van verscheidene ministers en tal van genodigden. De noordelijke spoorontsluiting van Brussels Airport zorgt vanaf 10 juni progressief voor een verbeterde bereikbaarheid van de luchthaven per spoor, zowel nationaal als internationaal. Op zaterdag 9 juni kon ook het publiek de nieuwe spoorverbinding onder de luchthavensite en het vernieuwde spoorstation ‘Brussel-Nationaal-Luchthaven’ van nabij ontdekken. Het meest spectaculaire onderdeel van de Diabolo was ongetwijfeld de computer- en lasergestuurde boring van de twee enkelsporige tunnelkokers, 16,5 meter onder de belangrijkste start- en landingsbanen van Brussels Airport. Beide 1,07 km lange tunnels werden afzonderlijk gegraven met een 66 meter lange boormachine zodat het vliegtuigverkeer tijdens de werkzaamheden nooit enige hinder heeft ondervonden. Luchtvaart is heel verscheiden en dat leest u ook in onze artikels. Guido trok naar de ‘Meeting Aérien’ van Saint-Hubert, een charmant gebeuren. Guy werd ontvangen op de Meet&Greet van de Sabena Aeroclub in Grimbergen. Frans was in Evere aanwezig op de inhuldiging van de herstelde graftombe van Georges Nélis. Paul en Jean-Pierre tekenden present op de leuke samenkomst van amateur-vliegtuigbouwers in Maillen. Jean-Pierre was in Florennes uitgenodigd op de voorstelling van de demoteams van Comopsair, tevens de eerste briefing voor de komende airshow van Florennes. Giovanni vloog met nieuwkomer Germanwings van Brussel naar Stuttgart, hierbij zijn reisverslag. Peter maakte op 23 mei een impressie over een record dat werd gezet door het EuroPilot Center in Deurne. Jean-Pierre bekeek de 22st Stampe Fly-In van op de grond en vanuit de lucht, geniet van zijn impressie. Hij las voor ons ook het boek ‘Naissance et développement de la base aérienne de Florennes 1943-1955’ van Kol Vl o.r. André « Phil » Dambly, een must voor liefhebbers van Belgische luchtvaartgeschiedenis.  Vergeet ook onze gegevensbank van het Belgisch luchtvaartpatrimonium niet (www.aviationheritage.eu). Er zijn twee Belgische sterrenkundigen met die naam: vader en zoon. In deze editie van 'korte biografische beschrijvingen van een sterrenkundige Belg' heb ik het over de vader. Hij is vooral bekend als astrofysicus en spectroscopist. In België behoren hij en zijn leerling de geofysicus Marcel Nicolet (eerste directeur van het BIRA) tot de pioniers van het Belgisch ruimteonderzoek. Hij wordt soms vermeld als Pol Swings.
