Aircraft Preservation Rumpler C IV 1463/17

Many years ago, an enthusiast saved what was considered as scrap : parts of a crashed Rumpler C IV.

After years of efforts, what was once bits and nuts turned to be a realistic restoration project.

Once a unique witness of the air battles over Belgium, the Rumpler C IV  1463/17  is now in the hands of Craftlab in Austria and will soon be the pride of his owner.
Thx to the highly motivated individuals who helped to save this gem for future generations.

Aircraft Preservation : Mirage 5BD on display at Retromobile

A  rare Mirage 5BD will be on display in Paris at the retromobile show. Although Mirage 5BA's and at least 1 Mirage 5 BR are preserved in Belgium, no trainer example of this magnificent fighter still exist in our country.

Le mariage TNT-UPS n'aura pas lieu. Les deux futurs époux redeviennent concurrents. La Commission européenne a fait savoir qu'elle allait s'opposer à la position dominante qu'ils auraient prise. Le divorce coûtera 200 millions d'euros à UPS.

Proba-V ondergaat cruciale testen in Frankrijk

De in België gebouwde Europese Proba-V aardobservatiesatelliet ondergaat momenteel cruciale testen in Frankrijk waarbij onderzocht wordt of de microsatelliet de lancering zal overleven en kan weerstaan aan de gevaarlijke omstandigheden uit de ruimte. Indien alles verloopt volgens planning wordt deze derde 'made in Belgium' satelliet in april 2013 in de ruimte gebracht door middel van een Europese Vega raket.

Nadat de bouw van Proba-V bij het ruimtevaartbedrijf QinetiQ Space in Kruibeke eind 2012 ten einde liep, werd de satelliet overgebracht naar de testfaciliteiten van Intespace in Toulouse, Frankrijk. Hier zal Proba-V onderworpen worden aan testen om te zien of alle gevoelige elektronische onderdelen de lancering gaan overleven en de kunstmaan kan functioneren in de gevaarlijke omstandigheden van de ruimte. De 160 kilogram zware Proba-V is de vierde satelliet uit het 'Project for On-Board Autonomy' van het Europese ruimtevaartagentschap ESA. Met de Proba-V satelliet willen wetenschappers de vegetatie op Aarde gedetailleerd in kaart brengen en onderzoeken. Het belangrijkste instrument aan boord van Proba-V is het Vegetation-instrument dat een compacte versie is van een soortgelijk instrument dat ook al gebruikt werd aan boord van de SPOT-4 en SPOT-5 aardobservatiesatellieten. Naast het Vegetation-instrument is Proba-V ook uitgerust met een compacte stralingsdetector (Energetic Particle Telescope) dat de naaste omgeving in de ruimte moet bestuderen.

Belgium to offer France logistical backup in Mali

Belgium is set to contribute two C-130 transport planes and a medivac helicopter to back up France's offensive against Islamist fighters in Mali, Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said Tuesday.
A decision to offer “logistical” support will be taken at a special cabinet meeting on Mali later Tuesday to discuss a French request for backup, Reynders said on RTBF radio.
With France short on troop transport planes, Belgium was likely to offer a C-130 that is already in the region and a second that could be on the scene Wednesday. The helicopter will be flown in next week.In all the Belgian contribution would entail the dispatch of 80 soldiers.Reynders said the international community had been slow to respond to the crisis in Mali but that it was important now to look at an exit strategy to avoid getting bogged down as in Afghanistan.That is why it will be key to hand over as soon as possible to an international force made up of regional troops while participating in a European Union mission to train and restructure the Malian army, the minister said.
EU ministers are to hold an emergency meeting this week on Mali, probably on Thursday, during which they may announce the official launch of the 400- to 500-strong mission.

Cargo tonnage declines 14.5% at Liege Airport

Liege Airport has announced it handled 576,664 metric tonnes of airfreight in 2012, a 14.5% decline compared to 674,469 metric tonnes handled in 2011. The airport attributed the decline to the “profound effect” the depressed economic environment has had on the airfreight sector.

Le ministre des Affaires étrangères Didier Reynders a confirmé que la Belgique allait « fort probablement » s'engager dans le conflit au Mali avec l'envoi de deux C-130, d'un hélicoptère et de militaires pour des missions de formation.

Vliegtuigbewegingen Brussels Airport met 4,5 procent gedaald

Er zijn het voorbije jaar op luchthaven Brussels Airport 223.431 vliegtuigbewegingen geteld. Dat betekende een daling met bijna 4,5 procent tegenover het jaar voordien. Dat blijkt uit cijfers van luchtverkeersleider Belgocontrol. De luchthaven is daarmee teruggezakt tot het niveau van de eerste helft van de jaren negentig. Bij de eeuwwisseling werd een absolute piek van 325.979 vliegbewegingen opgetekend. Ondanks de daling blijkt het aantal passagiers vorig jaar toch met 1 procent te zijn gestegen tegenover het jaar voordien. Dat is het gevolg van een grotere capaciteit bij een aantal maatschappijen, die op grotere vliegtuigen zijn overgestapt. Uit de cijfers van Belgocontrol blijkt verder nog dat het voorbije jaar 14.648 nachtvluchten werden geteld. Dat betekent een status-quo tegenover het jaar voordien. Vier jaar geleden werd een maximumgrens van 16.000 nachtvluchten ingevoerd. Toen de Europese hub van DHL nog op Zaventem was gesitueerd, werden 25.100 nachtvluchten geteld. (MH)

2013, three years already for Avialogs !

3 years already and so many projects to do ...
Our new website is already on-line and will be further updated in the following months.
There are still a few bugs and section headings to perfect, but all the contents are available. 6,500 documents and a thousand photos.

Whilst the work is done by three volunteers, the server hosting (1 main, 1 backup and 2 TB of hard disk space) isn't free.  A document scanner is also under construction but cannot be completed without funds (comprising two digital cameras and remote control software).  Purchasing new documents is also expensive and is currently done with personal funds.

This project has so far had quite some success, establishing links with several organisations in Canada, U SA and soon into Europe.

Today, only about 10% of the users support the project financially.  If you are one of this minority, then our sincere thanks to you for your help, which enables us to pay for the hostings services.
