Commandant Michael Artiges brings experience to Luke Air Force Base
11/2/2012 - LUKE AIR FORCE BASE, Ariz. -- Many
people know about Luke Air Force Base's foreign units the 425th Fighter
Squadron, and the 21st FS, but there are other foreign officers here as
part of an international exchange program.
The Military Personnel Exchange Program has given one pilot with the Belgian air force the opportunity to come here to learn, as well as help teach new B-course students.
Belgian Commandant Michael Artiges, 308th Fighter Squadron instructor pilot, was selected from five candidates for two exchange positions, one in Portugal and one in the U.S.
This is not his first time in the U.S. as a pilot. In 1996, Artiges spent nine months as a B-Course student in Tucson learning to fly with the Arizona National Guard.

"My experience in Tucson was to help the Belgian air force better understand how training in the U.S. was compared to ours," he said. "There are more flying days and other differences we used to better our program. Unfortunately, after about five classes they canceled the program."
This time is different for Artiges since he brought his family.
"It's a challenge being back," he said. "When you're alone, it's easy to fix the small things that come up, but now with the family here, it's a different ballgame. It was challenging for my family at the beginning, but now that school is fixed and the children are in classes, my wife has been able to return to school to better her English."
Living in the U.S. was a goal for Artiges and his wife, but the process to get here took him a few tries.
"This was not my first time applying to the program," he said. "I tried before with no luck. My wife and I were hoping to get into the program, specifically the position in the U.S., and finally we got it."
Now as part of the Emerald Knights he is going through familiarization training.
"I am almost done with my initial training," he said. "The training is to familiarize me with the aircraft I will be flying here. After that, I will start my instructor pilot training and soon after begin training incoming pilots."

Space shuttle Enterprise exposed, suffers damage from 'superstorm' Sandy
Space shuttle Enterprise, NASA's original prototype orbiter, is sitting exposed and appears to have been partially damaged by Hurricane Sandy after the severe storm passed over New York City on Monday night (Oct. 29).
On display on board the flight deck of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a converted aircraft carrier, since July, Enterprise had been protected from the elements inside a pressurized pavilion. Based on photos posted online, the inflatable structure appears to have first deflated and then torn by the winds of the now post-tropical storm cyclone.
Photos show the 180-foot-long (55 meters) by 60-foot-high (18 meters) pavilion's fabric exterior now lies draped over Enterprise, though much of the shuttle's nose section and part of its payload bay is uncovered. The orbiter's vertical stabilizer, or tail, is protruding out the top, where it looks like part of the spacecraft may have been torn away.

Il reconstruit le 1er avion toulousain avec des Gersois

L'association toulousaine les Ailes Anciennes va reconstruire entièrement le premier avion produit industriellement par Latécoère en 1917 à Toulouse, le Salmson 2A.2, avec des lycéens d'Auch et Samatan.
L'Histoire va reprendre forme sous leurs mains. L'association les Ailes Anciennes, en collaboration avec des lycéens de Samatan et du Garros à Auch, va reconstruire grandeur nature le Salmson 2A.2. Cet avion de guerre - dont il n'existe plus aucun exemplaire d'origine - a été le premier fabriqué à grande échelle dans les usines Latécoère à Toulouse, à partir de 1917.
Avec le Bréguet 14, le Salmson 2A.2 a été le principal avion de reconnaissance en service dans l'armée française, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale. Latécoère, qui ne produisait jusque-là que des chemins de fer à Bagnères-de-Bigorre, récupère la licence Salmson à la demande de l'armée française. «L'avion a été construit à 3 000 exemplaires, mais il n'en existe plus aucun dans le monde», déplore Jean-François Bruna-Rosso, le président des Ailes Anciennes.
Seul un musée japonais - où le Salmson a été produit, ainsi qu'aux États-Unis et en Italie - a réussi à en reconstituer un, car il avait conservé une partie du squelette métallique d'origine. C'est grâce à cette reconstitution japonaise que les Ailes Anciennes disposent des plans de l'avion. L'association ne part donc pas dans l'inconnu. D'ailleurs, il possède déjà le moteur du Salmson, qui lui a été donné par le musée Safran de Melun (Seine-et-Marne). «Mais c'est quand même la première fois que notre association se lance dans une reconstitution. Et si des particuliers possèdent des documents ou des pièces se rapportant au Salmson, ils peuvent bien évidemment nous contacter».
Le chantier de construction a démarré à cette rentrée, et devrait durer jusqu'en juin 2014. Il se déroule dans deux lycées techniques, Clément-Ader à Samatan, et Le Garros à Auch. Une convention a été signée récemment avec les lycées, la ville de Gimont, l'association Planète Sciences Midi-Pyrénées, et l'usine Latécoère de Gimont. Le Salmson 2A.2 aura vocation à être exposé, à Gimont mais aussi au futur musée Aeroscopia de Blagnac, qui ouvrira en 2014.
Lycées gersois : «Un défi pour les élèves»
Au mur de l'atelier bois du lycée le Garros, des plans sont accrochés. Ailes, moteur, hélice, structures, tout y est répertorié… en japonais. «Le Salmson 2A.2 était construit au Japon, seul pays à ce jour à en avoir fait une reconstitution», rappelle le chef de travaux du lycée André Benech. A lui et à son homologue de Clément-Ader de tout décrypter.
Le lycée Le Garros prendra en charge la structure en bois, Clément-Ader s'occupera de la mécanique. Les Ailes anciennes possèdent pour leur part un moteur et une hélice d'origine. «On appelle cela une maquette parce qu'il ne volera pas, précise André Benech. Mais il sera réalisé grandeur nature.»
A Auch, une quarantaine d'élèves sont ainsi concernés par le projet. Des Bac pro techniciens agenceurs et des BTS qui possèdent de bonnes capacités en conception y travailleront. «On veut montrer qu'entre lycées on peut-être complémentaires», souligne le proviseur-adjoint Giany Firoaguer. Et André Benech d'ajouter : «L'idée finale, c'est de créer une collaboration avec d'autres établissements du Gers et de Midi-Pyrénées, pour l'assemblage à Gimont par exemple.» L'association toulousaine Planète Sciences suivra le projet afin d'en faire des compte-rendus, notamment photographiques, qui seront ensuite présentés à différents lycées.
En parallèle, le lycée le Garros a initié cette année un Brevet d'initiation à l'aéronautique pour les élèves de 2nde et première. 11 personnes sont déjà inscrites. Un instructeur vient chaque semaine proposer des cours théoriques. Au second semestre, des cours pratiques sur simulateur devraient commencer. «Il y aura également des visites organisées, à Airbus par exemple, précise Giany Firoaguer. Certains d'entre eux voudraient entrer dans des écoles spécialisées après le bac, comme celle d'Airbus justement. Ce BIA sera un plus sur leur CV.»
Guerre et transport
La production du Salmson 2A.2 a démarré fin 1917, la mise en service début 1918. Au total, 3 200 appareils ont été construits et utilisés par l'armée française, l'armée italienne et les forces américaines. La fonction première du 2A.2 était la reconnaissance, le poste arrière était équipé d'une trappe pour les appareils photographiques. Le 2A.2 pouvait aussi être utilisé pour des missions de bombardement de jour, il était dans ce cas équipé d'une mitrailleuse synchronisée Vickers implantée au-dessus du capot moteur, et parfois d'une mitrailleuse arrière pour l'observateur. La version «limousine» pouvait emporter deux personnes assises en vis-à-vis dans une cabine fermée, capitonnée, éclairée par quelques fenêtres dans laquelle on pénétrait par un toit ouvrant.
Sans performance particulière, l'avion était robuste, fiable, facile à entretenir et pouvait subir de grands dommages. Après le conflit de 1914-1918, le Salmson 2A.2 fut beaucoup employé sur les lignes de l'Aéropostale. C'est avec un appareil de ce type que Pierre-Georges Latécoère effectua le premier vol d'études Toulouse-Barcelone le 25 décembre 1918. Les 2A.2 seront principalement mis en service sur la ligne vers le Maroc, et seront retirés en 1923.

Salmson 2A.2 > produits entre 1917 et 1920. Il ne reste aucun exemplaire d'origine. Seul un musée japonais a déjà effectué une reconstitution.
