Staff from the Temora and the RAAF Museums roll out the Air Force's vintage Tiger Moth prior to the Defence Force Air Show.

The air show held 21-22 October celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force at what was formerly known as Ham Common, now RAAF Base Richmond. Originally called RAAF Station Richmond until 1952, Richmond was the second Air Force Base to be established within Australia and the first in New South Wales. Today, RAAF Base Richmond is one of the oldest operational air bases in Australia and also one of the busiest due to activities of the Air Lift Group, as well as being the hub of all the RAAF and Australian Defence Force logistics.

The air show featured a variety of exhibitions and ground displays to entertain the whole family. This included both of the Air Force Bands, the Air Force Balloon, Air Force Police Dogs (Military Working Dogs), and a variety of civilian exhibitors. The exhilarating flying program incorporated some of Australia's finest vintage propeller-driven aircraft through to jets and helicopters in service with the ADF today.

One highlight of the show was the first public viewing of the newest asset of the Air Force, the giant C-17 Globemaster. Over the two days, the huge crowds were entertained by a variety of aircraft including a Tiger Moth through to a World War II Spitfire, a Kittyhawk, and a Mustang. These aircraft were supported by the first aircraft of the jet age, the Meteor, the Vampire, and a Canberra bomber, culminating in the current breed of Air Force aircraft, the C-130J, the PC-9, the F-111, and the F/A-18 Hornet. A retired A17 Tiger Moth performs for the crowds at the Australian International Airshow 2011.

The de Havilland Tiger Moth served During World War II at No 5 Elementary Flying Training School at Narromine, NSW and No 10 EFTS, Temora, NSW. The 2011 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition, held at Avalon in Victoria from 1-6 March, coincides with the Royal Australian Air Force's 90th birthday. Air Force's Airshow activities celebrate this milestone by remembering our past and looking to our future with the theme tradition, innovation, evolution. The Tiger Moth flew to the skies again during the Air Display at the Strand in Townsville.

The Australian Defence Force Air Display was one of the most colourful mounted by the air show team since the current series commenced in 2001. Despite visibility issues created by a rare dust storm, an impressive array of military aircraft performed along the full length of the Strand. Featuring the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the "Thunderbirds", the Air Display also included the popular RAAF Air Demonstration Squadron the "Roulettes"; the C-17 Globemaster; C-130H Hercules; F/A-18 Hornet; Hawk 127, Army helicopters including the Chinook, Blackhawk, and MRH-90; warbirds; skydivers; and the "Red Baron". Ground displays included the Force Ten RAAF Band; Australian Federation Guard Precision Drill Team; Townsville Pipe and Drum Band; along with rides, exhibitions, and a plethora of food and drinks. The successful day's event concluded with the F-111 performing its spectacular "dump and burn", followed by a dazzling fireworks extravaganza on the foreshore. The Air Display is said to have attracted around 70,000 spectators, equivalent to roughly 40% of the population of Townsville. (RAAF photo by SGT Rob Mitchell, 82TIF CBTCAM 87SQN)
