Brothers Colin and Ewan McGregor follow up their documentary The Battle of Britain with a film exploring Bomber Command, a rarely-told story from the Second World War.

The film focuses primarily on the men who fought and died in the skies above occupied Europe, with numerous examples of individual heroism and extraordinary collective spirit, and Colin learns to fly the key aircraft of the campaign: the Lancaster bomber. But this is also the story of a controversy that has lasted almost 70 years.

The programme covers six years of wartime operations, and traces the obstacles and challenges that were overcome as the RAF developed and deployed the awesome fighting force that was Bomber Command. 

Brussels Airlines launches new scheduled service to Edinburgh

On 28 October Brussels Airlines will launch a new scheduled service to Edinburgh. From then on Scotland’s capital city will be connected six times a week with Brussels Airport. Starting next summer season two daily frequencies will be scheduled. Return tickets are available from 99 euro, taxes included.  With the opening of Edinburgh Brussels Airlines adds an important leisure and business destination to its European network. Edinburgh is a vibrant city, hosting a number of exciting events all year.  The Old Town, proclaimed  UNESCO World Heritage with the famous Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile Promenade and the many bars, pubs and restaurants of the Grass Market make Edingburgh a fantastic citytrip destination offering lots of attractions, places to visit and a shopping experience like no other. Edinburgh is also the capital of Scotland. The city houses the Scottish Parliament, and is the second most important financial centre of the UK, after London, due to the presence of many banks and insurance companies.  
Edinburgh airport is the ideal gateway to discover the city, the peaceful countryside in the Lothians land and the surrounding green scenery in Scotland. This year, Edinburgh airport was awarded for the second time “Best European Airport” in the category 5-10 million passengers. 

As from 28 October Brussels Airlines will fly six times a week from Brussels Airport to Edinburgh Airport.  From summer season 2013 onwards the airline will even offer two daily flights.
Edinburgh is the 6th Brussels Airlines destination in the UK, and complements the daily Brussels Airlines flight offer to London Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Newcastle.

The schedule allows for perfect combinations with other European Brussels Airlines destinations s.a. in  Germany, France, Switzerland and Spain.

Belgians in RAF and SAAF 1940 1945 Cérémonie en l'honneur de Charles de Hepcée

During a ceremony full of emotion, Charles de Hepcée came back home in Braibant near Ciney after being missing for 70 years. 

The Belgian Air Force (Comopsair) took an important part in this event by the presence of authorities and of young pilot trainees who are today members of the squadron, Charley de Hepcée was commanding in 1940.Thanks to Mehdi for sharing his pictures.

Luchthaven Kortrijk-Wevelgem tevreden met groei zakenreizen

De Internationale Luchthaven Kortrijk-Wevelgem heeft tijdens de eerste helft van dit jaar het aantal internationale zakenreizigers met 13,3 procent zien toenemen tegenover dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Dat heeft de West-Vlaamse Intercommunale Vliegveld Wevelgem-Bissegem bekend gemaakt. Het aantal zakenvluchten steeg met bijna 10 procent. De intercommunale zegt bijzonder tevreden te zijn met die groei, aangezien de regionale luchthaven zich vooral op de sector van de zakenreizen wil toeleggen. Ook vorig jaar liet de sector, ondanks de moeilijke economische omstandigheden en de volatiele brandstofprijzen, al een groei met 18 procent optekenen. In totaal werden tijdens de eerste zes maanden van dit jaar 17.302 vliegbewegingen geteld. Dat betekende slechts een stijging met 1 procent, omdat er bij de lokale vluchten en de scholing een status-quo of een lichte daling werd geregistreerd. (MH)

Brussels Airlines: drie procent groei in eerste halfjaar

De vliegtuigen van Brussels Airlines hebben in de eerste helft van 2012 bijna 2,8 miljoen passagiers vervoerd. Het bedrijf spreekt van een toename van 3,1 procent ten opzichte van dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Het halfjaar werd afgesloten met ruim 540.000 passagiers in juni, een stijging van 2,7 procent.
De groei in juni is volgens Brussels Airlines toe te schrijven aan de uitbreiding van het intercontinentale netwerk. Op lijndienstvluchten naar Afrika werd een passagierstoename van zestien procent genoteerd.
Brussels Airlines begon op 1 juni bovendien een route naar de eerste intercontinentale bestemming buiten Afrika. De luchtvaartmaatschappij voegde New York aan haar dienstregeling toe. De dagelijkse route trok vorige maand meer dan 13.000 passagiers, wat een gemiddelde bezettingsgraad van 78,3 procent opleverde.
Over het hele netwerk steeg de bezettingsgraad in juni met een half procentpunt naar 69,8 procent.

It now can start discussions with the landing gear front leg (that joined the workshop yesterday), and the other parts that were desperately waiting for some company.
The remaining sections, presently stored in Grimbergen, will soon follow the same path.
More about that coming move later during the holiday period.

New datafile on Belgian-Wings: Bristol F.2b Fighter Type 17 or Bristol 300

 A new datafile has been added to the Belgian-Wings website: the Hispano powered Bristol F.2b Fighter Type 17(A) or Bristol 300 as it was known in the Belgian Air Service.

At the same time three new walkarounds of Bristol Fighters have been included covering the machines preserved at the Royal Army Museum at Brussels, the Imperial War Museum at Duxford and the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon. Click on the picture for a link to the datafile

Request for info/pictures of the 1950 Brussels Salon Aéronautique.

This week Vincent Jacobs provided this marvellous overview picture of the Salon Aéronautique de Bruxelles/Luchtvaartsalon van Brussel, which was organised at the Heyzel/Heysel from 10 till 25 June 1950.

Yves Duwelz promptly suggested to make an article on this event, which also celebrated the "50th anniversary of aerospace" and was combined with an airshow at Deurne -Antwerpen airfield.
