Belgium To End Kabul Airport Protection Mission

Belgium is ending its longest mission in Afghanistan, the protection of Kabul International Airport (KAIA), over the next few months. Starting in October, the mission will be taken over by a multinational unit under French command and including Portuguese, Hungarian and Albanian troops. Belgium has been conducting the mission with around 250 troops since the beginning of 2003. Belgium will continue to participate in other NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) missions in Afghanistan. In Kabul, it will continue to have personnel assigned to ISAF headquarters and in various Afghan National Army (ANA) schools. In Kandahar, where Belgium has a detachment of F-16s, four Belgian instructors are mentoring the Afghan National Air Force, and Belgian surgeons are working in the base's military hospital. In Kunduz, Belgian personnel are supporting the provincial reconstruction team and are members of military advisory teams advising, training and supporting the ANA. Finally, Belgian instructors are teaching at the ANA engineering school in Mazar-e-Sharif.

Een vriend van ons, Johan Kieckens is op zoek naar een foto die hij mag gebruiken voor publicatie van een Focke Wulf Weihe zwever (PL50) van de Luchtcadetten.

Ik heb er geen, en zie dat er geen staat op de database van Belgian Wings.

Heeft iemand van jullie er soms een foto van ?

Ik ga ook een oproep doen naar al de mailadressen die ik heb ex Luchtcadetten, moest dit wat opleveren stuur ik die zeker door voor de database.

Dag Dirk,

Ik ben een Duitse vriend aan het helpen met een uitgebreid boek over de gekende Duitse ontwerper Hans Jacobs.Ik heb hem heel wat fotomateriaal kunnen bezorgen maar we zijn nu op zoek naar een foto van de Weihe PL50 van de luchtcadetten.Dit tyoestel is ook een ontwerp van Jacobs en hij had graag een foto gehad.Ik weet dat er fotos van bestaan,er staat trouwens een in het boek Zweefvliegen in Vlaanderen.Ik weet ook ondertussen dat de groep militairen die het onderhoud van deze kisten doet zo nu en dan aan de restauratie bezig zijn.

Mijn vraag is of jij  een foto van de PL50 hebt,of iemand die dit heeft en of het ook mag gepubliceerd worden.Het boek is al zo ver klaar dat de grafische vormgeving al achter de rug is en dat hij zal uitkomen rond kerstmis.

Dirk ik had gehoopt dat jij de nodige contacten had.

Proba-1 fotografeert Olympische Spelen in Londen

De afgelopen weken stonden de Olympische Spelen in Londen wereldwijd in het middelpunt van de belangstelling. Zelfs vanuit de ruimte werd dit gigantisch sportevenement en zijn bijhorende faciliteiten nauwlettend in de gaten gehouden. Zo slaagde de in België gebouwde microsatelliet Proba-1 er in om het Olympisch Stadium en de omgeving te fotograferen vanop een hoogte van 720 kilometer. De zwart-wit foto werd gemaakt met de High Resolution Camera (HRC) aan boord van Proba-1 dat opnamen maakt met een resolutie van tien meter bij een framegrootte van vijf kilometer. Op de opname zijn duidelijk het Olympisch Stadium, het London Aquatics Centre, het London Velopark, de Basketball Arena en het olympisch dorp te zien waar de atleten verbleven. De experimentele ESA-kunstmaan Proba-1 werd gebouwd door Verhaert Space uit Kruibeke (nu QinetiQ Space) en werd in oktober 2001 in de ruimte gebracht door middel van een Indiase PSLV draagraket. Door het succes van deze kleine satelliet werd Proba-1 een bijzondere 'fotograaf' in een baan om de Aarde die bekend staat om zijn unieke opnamen.

Amelia Earhart Discovery? Evidence of Downed Plane Discovered in the Pacific

Some 75 years after Amelia Earhart’s plane disappeared, a new discovery on the bottom of the ocean points to where the aviator may have crashed — and died. (via tighar.org)

A debris field videotaped in the waters off Nikumaroro Island could include remnants of the aviator’s plane — the latest batch of evidence in what has been an ongoing search for clues (see the most notable Earhart discoveries from the last 75 years). According to the International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR), “a review of high-definition underwater video footage taken during the recently completed Niku VII expedition has revealed a scattering of man-made objects on the reef slope off the west end of Nikumaroro.”

Spearheaded by TIGHAR, the expedition began July 12 and used an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to scan for data and record hours of video footage

American Airlines stopt verbinding Brussel-New York

De Amerikaanse luchtvaartmaatschappij American Airlines stopt begin november zijn verbinding tussen Brussels Airport en JFK Airport in New York. De luchtvaartmaatschappij zet daarmee al zijn activiteiten in België stop. Op dit ogenblik telt de Amerikaanse luchtvaartmaatschappij nog 28 medewerkers op de luchthaven. Daarnaast werken ook nog vijf mensen bij de verkoopsafdeling in Brussel. De maatschappij zegt de beslissing genomen te hebben in het licht van het opdrijven van de performantie en de vooruitzichten en trends op de markt. In vakbondskringen wordt een mogelijk verband gelegd met de grote concurrentie voor vluchten naar de Verenigde Staten op Brussels Airport, dat transatlantische vluchten van alle Noord-Amerikaanse maatschappijen ontvangt. American Airlines vloog sinds het eind van de jaren tachtig dagelijks tussen Zaventem en New York. Vorig jaar schrapte de maatschappij al de dagelijkse vluchten tussen Chicago en Brussel. (MH)

New Belgium flights from Bristol (U.K.)

Passengers flying from Bristol Airport to Brussels will board a new, improved aircraft from the end of October following an agreement between Brussels Airlines and Flybe. 

The Belgian airline’s three-times daily service to Europe’s ‘capital’ is operated by Flybe under a ‘wet-lease’ contract which will see a Bombardier Q400 introduced on the route.  
The new aircraft has capacity for 78 passengers – a 60 per cent increase in seats compared to the Embraer 145 currently operating the service.  It will bear the Brussels Airlines livery and offer the same product and services enjoyed across the Brussels Airlines short haul network, meaning passengers from Bristol will enjoy a seamless product when using the flight to access onward connections.

As one of the quietest and most technologically advanced turboprop aircraft on the market, the Q400 will also deliver environmental improvements.  It produces 30-40 per cent less emissions on routes where it has replaced similar capacity, older jets.
The Brussels Airlines service operates three times a day, with convenient connections from Brussels to 21 destinations in Africa, 50 European cities and a new daily flight to New York JFK.  Flight times include an early morning departure (06:20) making it possible to do a day’s business before returning at 16:20 or 20:50.  The winter schedule also includes a Saturday flight.

Voulu dès 1939 par Howard Hughes, le beau quadrimoteur à hélices Constellation fut d'abord affecté au transport de troupes. Il faut attendre 1945 pour que son exploitation commerciale commence, et que différentes versions soient construites. Le plus prestigieux, le Super G, décolle pour la première fois en décembre 1954, mais les vols sont encore réservés à une élite. Et être hôtesse à bord fait rêver les jeunes filles... Mais l'avènement du Jet met fin à la suprématie du Constellation

Wallonië organiseert voor de vierde maal Space Days

De overkoepelende vereniging Wallonie Espace organiseert op 26 en 27 september 2012 voor de vierde maal het Space Days evenement. Deze vierde editie vindt plaats in Luik en staat ditmaal helemaal in het teken van aardobservatie. Tijdens het Space Days evenement wil men zoveel mogelijk organisaties, bedrijven en universiteiten bij elkaar brengen die actief zijn op vlak van ruimtevaart en aardobservatie. Zo zullen tijdens dit tweedaags evenement verschillende gastsprekers, waaronder ESA General Director Jean-Jacques Dordain, Head of ESA GMES Space Office Earth Observation Directorate Josef Aschbacher en President & CEO van Thales Alenia Space Reynald Seznec, geïnteresseerden op de hoogte brengen van de laatste ontwikkelingen en plannen op vlak van aardobservatie. Tijdens de twee 'Industry Days' staat er ondermeer een uitstap op het programma naar enkele Waalse ruimtevaartbedrijven zoals AMOS, Spacebel en het Centre Spatial de Liège alsook een sociaal event waar enkele ESA en NASA ruimtevaarders zullen op aanwezig zijn. Ook zullen er workshops georganiseerd worden waarbij specialisten meer komen vertellen over instrumenten die gebruikt worden voor aardobservatie, data processing en ground applications. Het grote publiek kan naar aanleiding van de Space Days 2012 van 21 september tot en met 31 oktober 2012 ook terecht in het Médiacité Centre in Luik voor een tentoonstelling over aardobservatie. Met de tentoonstelling wil men het grote publiek en jongeren bewust maken van de belangrijke rol die de ruimtevaartindustrie en ruimtevaart-toepassingen vandaag de dag spelen in ons dagelijks leven.

Crash van een Belgische F-16 tijdens de landingsfase te kleine Brogel

Crash van een F-16 tijdens de landingsfase

Op 16 augustus om 14 44 u vertrok een F-16 van de basis van Kleine-Brogel (provincie Limburg) voor een trainingsvlucht. Bij het terugkeren naar de basis voerde de piloot een lage overvlucht uit. De controletoren heeft daarbij vuur waargenomen aan de achterkant van het toestel.

Het ongeval voltrok zich om 15.01u op 1 km van de piste van Kleine-Brogel. De piloot heeft met succes zijn schietstoel gebruikt en werd veilig en wel teruggevonden.

Een onderzoek is opgestart, maar volgens de eerste informatie zou het kunnen gaan over een birdstrike (aanvaring met vogel(s)). De piloot zelf gaf dit aan in zijn communicatie met de controletoren.
