Le médecin bruxellois Maurice Duwez (1881–1966) avait déjà tâté de la plume avant guerre sous le pseudonyme de Max Deauville. Lors de l'offensive allemande de 1914, il a pris part, en tant que médecin de bataillon, à la retraite de l'armée belge, d'abord vers Anvers, puis vers le Westhoek. Il restera sur le front de l'Yser, en première ligne, jusqu'en novembre 1915, dans les secteurs de Dixmude, Lo et Lizerne.
Son récit a été publié dès 1917 chez l'éditeur parisien Calmann-Lévy.
Cette édition est enrichie d'une préface inédite de Norton Cru, d'un glossaire et de 70 clichés d'époque.

VLM Airlines gaat zich concentreren op ACMI- en chartervluchten

Antwerpen, 2 mei 2014 – Op 30 april 2014 werd Intro Aviation 100% eigenaar van CityJet Group, waartoe ook VLM Airlines behoort. 

Intro Aviation GmbH is een in Duitsland gevestigde familiale onderneming en maakt deel uit van de Intro Group, die reeds meer dan 40 jaar luchtvaartervaring heeft. Dankzij deze ervaring - ook op het vlak van Sales & Marketing - en dankzij de goede samenwerking met zowel luchthavens als vliegtuigbouwers, heeft Intro Aviation in het verleden al verschillende luchtvaartmaatschappijen met een minimum aan herstructureringen opnieuw rendabel gemaakt. Voorbeelden daarvan zijn NFD (Nürnberger Flug Dienst, nu deel van Eurowings (LH)), dba (daarvoor Deutsche BA), Gexx en LTU (nu geïntegreerd in Air Berlin). VLM Airlines, dat aanvankelijk een full-service regionale luchtvaartmaatschappij was die lijnvluchten aanbood, werd na de overname door CityJet en de Air France KLM Group een ACMI-carrier (ACMI = Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance & Insurance, d.w.z. wet lease-aanbieder). De voorbije twee jaar werden de charteractiviteiten van VLM Airlines verder ontwikkeld, hetgeen resulteerde in een verdubbeling van de charterinkomsten.

Hans Rudolf Wöhrl, stichter en voorzitter van Intro Group, verklaarde: "Wij zijn van plan om VLM Airlines af te splitsen van CityJet. Ten gevolge daarvan wordt VLM Airlines opnieuw een onafhankelijke Belgische dochteronderneming van onze Ierse holding. Naar de toekomst toe zal VLM Airlines een belangrijke aanbieder worden van ACMI-diensten en chartervluchten, met CityJet als één van zijn belangrijkste klanten. Wij kijken ernaar uit om samen met de medewerkers en de directie van VLM een nieuw succesverhaal te schrijven!"

Arthur White, CEO van VLM Airlines, voegde eraan toe: "Ik ben heel enthousiast om samen met de nieuwe aandeelhouders te werken aan de ontwikkeling van VLM Airlines. Op dit ogenblik bekijken wij de herpositionering van de merken FlyVLM en VLM Airlines. In de nabije toekomst willen wij nieuwe ACMI-klanten aantrekken en de charteractiviteiten verder uitbouwen."

Volgens Arthur White werd VLM Airlines steeds gepercipieerd als een Vlaamse regionale luchtvaartmaatschappij met als thuisbasis Luchthaven Antwerpen: "Daarom vinden wij het ook enorm belangrijk om op korte termijn opnieuw stevige banden te smeden met de Vlaamse overheid, de stad Antwerpen, Voka – Kamer van Koophandel Antwerpen-Waasland, Luchthaven Antwerpen en de nieuwe luchthavenuitbater Egis."

VLM Airlines werd opgericht in 1992 en heeft Antwerpen als thuisbasis. VLM Airlines staat al jarenlang bekend om zijn vluchten tussen Antwerpen en London City Airport. In 2007 werd de luchtvaartmaatschappij verkocht aan Air France KLM Group. Sindsdien vloog VLM Airlines on de merknaam CityJet vanuit London City Airport naar tal van Europese bestemmingen, waaronder Parijs, Dublin, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Luxemburg en Edinburg. Vòòr de overname door Air France KLM Group was VLM Airlines 10 jaar onafgebroken winstgevend. Hiermee zette VLM Airlines een van de beste winstresultaten neer van de hele Belgische luchtvaartsector. VLM Airlines telt 280 medewerkers. De vloot bestaat uit twaalf Fokker 50's.

Le premier hélicoptère NH90 successeur du Sea King attendu vendredi à Coxyde

Le premier des quatre nouveaux hélicoptères NH90 en version navale (NFH) destinés à remplacer les vénérables Sea King de recherche et de sauvetage en mer de l'armée est attendu vendredi après-midi sur sa future base de Coxyde, a-t-on appris jeudi soir de sources militaires concordantes.
    Cet appareil à la livrée grise immatriculé RN-02 - le premier se trouve depuis huit mois dans le sud de la France pour la formation du personnel navigant et au sol - a quitté jeudi l'usine d'Airbus Helicopters de de Donauwörth (Bavière, sud de l'Allemagne) pour rejoindre la Belgique en deux jours.
    Il devrait arriver vendredi après-midi à Coxyde, selon des indiscrétions recueillies auprès de militaires. Des sites internet spécialisés évoquent une arrivée entre 15h00 et 16h00.        
    La Belgique a acquis en juin 2007, pour un montant de près de 300 millions d'euros, huit hélicoptères de type NH90 - quatre en version de transport tactique (TTH) et quatre en version NFH pour à la fois succéder aux Sea King et pour donner de nouvelles capacités aux deux frégates de la Marine.
    Mais le programme, mené en coopération par plusieurs pays européens, a pris des années de retard, principalement pour la version NFH, la plus complexe des deux, contraignant l'armée belge à prolonger la vie de ses Sea King quasi-quadragénaires.
    Immatriculé RN-01, le premier NFH belge a effectué son premier vol en mai 2013 et a été officiellement accepté par le client, la Défense belge, à l'issue d'une batterie de tests, le 1er août. Il se trouve depuis fin août à Marignane (sud de la France) où il sert jusqu'en juillet à la formation initiale des mécaniciens et des pilotes. Ce n'est qu'à ce moment qu'il devrait à son tour rallier Coxyde.
    Selon la Défense, il faudra encore attendre deux ans avant que les nouveaux appareils ne soient opérationnels et succèdent aux trois derniers Sea King de la 40ème escadrille, entrés en service en novembre 1976.
    La composante Air de l'armée a déjà pris livraison de deux de ses quatre TTH - aisément reconnaissables à leur livrée kaki - qui sont basés à Beauvechain. Un troisième appareil de cette version, le RN-07,  est attendu en Belgique vers la fin du mois de mai.  (Source Belga)

(*Aggies = de naam gegeven aan de studenten en gediplomeerden van de Texas A&M-universiteit).

Walter Pieters 7:38pm May 3 this day in 1918 over Flanders fields: Flight "Jaune" of Adjudants André De Meulemeester, Georges Kervyn, & Gusto de Mévius attacked a two-seater over Schoorbakke at close range, which broke up in the air. Gusto de Mévius was not credited with a share of this victory on account of a gun jam at the critical moment. Leutnant de Reserve Walter Lippold & Oberleutnant Karl Porth, MFA II, were killed on this day at Schoorbakke. In the evening the Green & White Flight of Lieutenant Jan Olieslagers, comprising Adjudants Léon Gérard & Gilbert Ory & Sergents Edmond Kervyn de Meerendré & Maurice Jamar spotted a solitary scout. It was attacked by Gérard, Ory, & finally by Olieslagers, who claimed to shoot it down. Earlier in the day, Olieslagers claimed another aircraft possibly hit, which went down out of control during a fight with his Green & White Flight & seven scouts.

En 2013, Aeroweb-fr.net avait rencontré Guy Legallet qui nous parlait de la restauration du Douglas DC-3 de l'Amicale Jean Baptiste Salis. Aujourd'hui, 27 avril, l'appareil fête ses 70 ans.

 

Lors du meeting de Cerny - La Ferté-Alais 2013, nous avions rencontré Monsieur Guy Legallet, membre actif de l'Amicale Jean Baptiste Salis (AJBS) et responsable du Douglas DC-3, il nous avait présenté le Douglas DC-3 de cette association (voir actualité).
Un an après notre première rencontre nous avons revu ce passionné d'aviation qui nous a renseignés sur l'avancée des travaux de restauration de ce mythique appareil, qui fête aujourd'hui ses 70 ans.

HAMILTON -- It's not the most comfortable way to get to England – and the
flight service stinks.

But if you are an aviation history buff, it would be the flight of a
lifetime.

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is offering the chance on eBay to fly
as a crew member in its Avro Lancaster to England this August. The famed
Second World War bomber is taking part in air shows in the United Kingdom
with the world's only other flying Lancaster, which is owned by the Royal
Air Force.

But here's the catch: It will cost you at least $40,000. That's the reserve
bid to buy the trip. So it could go for much more.

The ad says the successful bidder will "have the opportunity to be trained
and operate as a crew member" on the journey that "will be approximately an
18 hours flight over a four-day period.

"The museum reserves the right to assess the personal suitability of the
successful bidder to undergo training to safely operate as a crew member.
Maximum crew member weight is 250 lbs and you must be able to climb a ladder
and maneuver in tight places. Winner must be willing to sign a photo waiver
for the documentary filming."

As well you have to find your way to Hamilton airport two days prior to the
departure.

And when it comes to returning back to Canada -- you're on your own. The
$40,000 ticket is only one way.
