The 2015 edition of the Goodwood Revival saw a large gathering of Spitfires and Hurricanes to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This, along with select other warbirds, made up just part of the world-renowned event that celebrates a bygone era for three days every September. Huw Hopkins immersed himself in the atmosphere.

[vintage-and-warbirds] 30-Day Kickstarter Campaign Launches for B-29 Doc Flight Testing

Forwarded message - From: Jeff Rankin-Lowe siriusproductions

30-Day Kickstarter Campaign Launches for B-29 Doc Flight Testing
Doc's Friends seeking $137,500 in funds to get last-known airworthy B-29 in the air

WICHITA, Kan., Sept. 30, 2015 /CNW/ — After a 17-year restoration, Doc, the historic warbird that will soon become the second operational B-29 Superfortress, has now entered the flight-test stage. All four engines were successfully fired up on September 18 (http://tinyurl.com/o4ga62b) for the first time since 1956. But additional funding is needed to support this phase.

In an effort to raise those funds, Doc's Friends, the non-profit organization restoring the B-29 has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. The group will have 30 days to reach their stated goal of $137,500. Costs associated with this amount include fuel, maintenance, insurance, and others.

Doc's Friends board member Tom Bertels says that the Kickstarter campaign timing could not be better. "Our passionate team of supporters and volunteers have accomplished what many said couldn't be done. Beginning today, there's a 30-day window for everyone else to step up and be a part of history."

In a show of support, Apollo 13 crewmembers Jim Lovell and Fred Haise, as well as former SR-71 pilot Buz Carpenter also offered their thoughts on the importance on restoring and preserving history such as Doc. Their comments were captured on camera and are viewable on the Kickstarter page (http://tinyurl.com/pt85o95).

Since Tony Mazzolini rescued Doc from the Mojave Desert in 1987, the restoration has been a universal effort. More than 300,000 volunteer hours have been devoted and thousands of aircraft parts donated and refurbished in-kind.

Kickstarter has an all-or-nothing rule, where the project can only collect funds if the stated goal has been reached by the set deadline. "Every single pledge will make a difference, whether it's $10, $25, or $1,000. It's simple to become one of Doc's Friends," said Bertels.

A direct link to the Kickstarter page can be found here (http://tinyurl.com/pt85o95). You can also follow Doc's Friends progress on their website (www.b-29doc.com), Facebook (www.facebook.com/DocsFriends), and Twitter (twitter.com/docsfriends).

[Vintage_and_Warbirds_Pictures] PHOTOS: RAAF Tiger Moths

Staff from the Temora and the RAAF Museums roll out the Air Force's vintage Tiger Moth prior to the Defence Force Air Show.

The air show held 21-22 October celebrated the 85th anniversary of the Royal Australian Air Force at what was formerly known as Ham Common, now RAAF Base Richmond. Originally called RAAF Station Richmond until 1952, Richmond was the second Air Force Base to be established within Australia and the first in New South Wales. Today, RAAF Base Richmond is one of the oldest operational air bases in Australia and also one of the busiest due to activities of the Air Lift Group, as well as being the hub of all the RAAF and Australian Defence Force logistics.

The air show featured a variety of exhibitions and ground displays to entertain the whole family. This included both of the Air Force Bands, the Air Force Balloon, Air Force Police Dogs (Military Working Dogs), and a variety of civilian exhibitors. The exhilarating flying program incorporated some of Australia's finest vintage propeller-driven aircraft through to jets and helicopters in service with the ADF today.

One highlight of the show was the first public viewing of the newest asset of the Air Force, the giant C-17 Globemaster. Over the two days, the huge crowds were entertained by a variety of aircraft including a Tiger Moth through to a World War II Spitfire, a Kittyhawk, and a Mustang. These aircraft were supported by the first aircraft of the jet age, the Meteor, the Vampire, and a Canberra bomber, culminating in the current breed of Air Force aircraft, the C-130J, the PC-9, the F-111, and the F/A-18 Hornet. The de Havilland Tiger Moth served During World War II at No 5 Elementary Flying Training School at Narromine, NSW and No 10 EFTS, Temora, NSW. The 2011 Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition, held at Avalon in Victoria from 1-6 March, coincides with the Royal Australian Air Force's 90th birthday. Air Force's Airshow activities celebrate this milestone by remembering our past and looking to our future with the theme tradition, innovation, evolution. The Tiger Moth flew to the skies again during the Air Display at the Strand in Townsville.

The Australian Defence Force Air Display was one of the most colourful mounted by the air show team since the current series commenced in 2001. Despite visibility issues created by a rare dust storm, an impressive array of military aircraft performed along the full length of the Strand. Featuring the United States Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the "Thunderbirds", the Air Display also included the popular RAAF Air Demonstration Squadron the "Roulettes"; the C-17 Globemaster; C-130H Hercules; F/A-18 Hornet; Hawk 127, Army helicopters including the Chinook, Blackhawk, and MRH-90; warbirds; skydivers; and the "Red Baron". Ground displays included the Force Ten RAAF Band; Australian Federation Guard Precision Drill Team; Townsville Pipe and Drum Band; along with rides, exhibitions, and a plethora of food and drinks. The successful day's event concluded with the F-111 performing its spectacular "dump and burn", followed by a dazzling fireworks extravaganza on the foreshore. The Air Display is said to have attracted around 70,000 spectators, equivalent to roughly 40% of the population of Townsville. (RAAF photo by SGT Rob Mitchell, 82TIF CBTCAM 87SQN)

Video : [Vintage_and_Warbirds_Pictures] C-130 Aircraft Carrier Landings and Takeoffs

Forwarded message -  From: Steve Link steven_link

You should find this interesting.....

During 1963, a KC-130F aircraft made history by landing and
taking off from the aircraft carrier; USS Forrestal (CVA-59). The crew
successfully negotiated 29 touch-and-go landings, 21 unarrested full-stop
landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs at gross weights of 85,000 pounds up to
121,000 pounds.
Lockheed's only modifications to the original plane included
installing a smaller nose-landing gear orifice, an improved anti-skid
braking system, and removal of the underwing refueling pods. No tail
hook...No catapult. Painted on the side of the fuselage; "LOOK MA, NO
HOOK."
The airplane became the largest and heaviest aircraft
to ever land on an aircraft carrier, a record that stands to this
day.
